CAR HAWKING Starlings with a Pocket Falcon! (Kestrel)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This male American kestrel is learning the ropes of car hawking. Car hawking is a modern method of catching invasive birds, such as European starlings and English house sparrows, with a trained bird of prey.
In many places this practice is welcomed due to being able to remove a high volume of invasive birds. These bird species cause issues in our native environments by killing and stealing nesting sites from our native cavity nesting birds such as eastern bluebirds, woodpeckers, chickadees, and any other bird who is unlucky enough to cross paths with them, including kestrels on occasion!
After these catches are made the invasive birds are humanely dispatched and fed to the falcon. Nothing is wasted!

The bleeding heart in me feels bad for the starlings, but they are truly an invasive menace. Good on you for entertaining us and your small friend by helping the ecosystem

Oh so you're the guy throwing that murder birb out his window like a hand grenade. Lol I used to do that with my flying squirrel. He loved it.

Kestrels are tiny (around 90g) but have the attitude of a T-Rex! I love them

It seems there in field trials are much easier than the bigger birds. The game species is everywhere and plentiful. My question is do you do exercises to really strengthen his wing muscles for flying and flight acrobatics , like in an open field in training. I havnt seen too much endurance type stuff. I guess since you get the bird from the wild they’re already adapt to it since fledging from the nest?

This kestrel was captive bred. But for exercise we do lots of “tid-bit” games. Essentially making him work much harder for his daily portions. One of those exercises is called “jump ups” where he has to fly essentially straight up, which takes a lot of work for a bird, to get his tidbit. We’ll do repetitions of about 50 per session.

@@thatsnakeguy2074 what’s a cap bred kestrel tend to cost? Working on finding a sponsor ect for my state of CT sadly there were only 12 certified in my state as of 2016. My one hope is that the young woman now 26, in a town over from me, hasn’t gone to college outside the state or closed down her sanctuary as there were only 12 falconers including her in CT and I’m sure most are older gents that maybe retired and moved out of state or quit the lifestyle. If NY allows trapping of birds I could go there to acquire one from the wild, as my state doesn’t allow it. Or I’m going to need to purchase a captive bred red tailed to start with. I guess with a captive bred it’ll bond to me and I won’t have to worry about it flying away forever 😳😒 I’m sure this has happened to many a falconer. Hence the weighing of your bird in part.

I've wanted a raptor for a long time! Kestrel's seem perfect size wise. Is it completely legal to car hawk or do you need a license or other certification?

Look up the North American Falconers Association as a starting point. Every state has different laws that may or may not let you do this and even starting as an apprentice needs a sponsor and lots of training! Generally speaking, the American kestrel and red-tailed hawks are where you'd start too!

Unfortunately kestrels only weigh 90grams. So a camera small enough, battery and all, would have to be 1-2 grams. I doubt we’ll ever see them that small

People also make and sell starling traps online, make sure to let any non-starlings out and simply dump the trap in a vat of water (kiddie pool/trash, can etc) to dispatch as many starlings as possible at one time. Help save your local birds from these devils
