Just to show the final outcome of two Jaguar X-Type rear door-panels I wrapped in dark brown cow leather.
These two rear panels are part of a rear set that also includes the seat cushion and backrest.
All of these rear parts would be mounted on a wooden frame and would be used as an armchair for my upholstery office.
I will be showing step by step until concluding my furniture project.
I hope you find some inspiration in this video!
Cesar

This is great! One of my first jobs I worked in an automotive upholstery shop. We used some German glue that I couldn't pronounced the name of and stuff would never release. We also had a leather planer and we were able to get the leather almost paper thin. Made it very easy to stretch along complex curves.

Nice work on the X-Type. I have a sedan I would like to change the colour of the door cards/panels. Could you advise me if it is possible to apply a new layer over the top of an existing factory vinyl layer? I fear if I try to remove the existing factory cover, it might damage the panel itself. The current vinyl cover is in perfect condition as well. Thanks in advance for any tips.

  • @Cechaflo

Heat (hot air, vapor, etc.) does not soften the leather material. It only helps to erase wrinkles and give shape to molded parts, because the leather shrinks with heat. The heat technique works well with vinyl. What you first should take into account is to consider the stretchy side of leather: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lpyhpax_oLLZj5M.html If you want to make the leather softer, there are 'softeners' shoemakers use to mold leather: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pGWMldWMmsnNp5c.html

Once it is dry, the pieces can be easily lined up. The 'dry glue' is only activated with some 'heat' (the hot air of hair dryer is useful). The more this glue is dry the better.
