I have owned several cars in my lifetime at 73. Still have 16 of them. But I have found out that it isn't always a car manufacturer that have problems with their vehicles. I believe 60%-70% of the time, or more, that it's how the owners maintain and how they drive their cars, that determines how trouble free a car will be.

I think the question is less about how reliable is a car when its maintained, and more about how reliable is a car when its neglected. Buying used, you can't know 100%, most also don't want to have to spend thousands maintaining a car, as most people buying economy cars truthfully can barely afford the cars they own, nor do they know what to even do with cars. You also just have simple design issues and quality control issues that lack with some brands, and you can't 'maintain' that. Case and point, Cadillac's old Northstar engines, until 06, they were complete garbage, and even AFTER 06 they were blowing headgaskets, more rarely and prematurely under warranty, but still happened. Quality control also plays a factor, what is the likelihood your car was built correctly and up to a standard? Toyota/Honda have higher QC, therefore, they have a higher standard, therefore, you're less likely to get a 'bad' car. Though I generally agree, I think the Toyota tax, especially right now, is absurd, 20 year old Toyota's going for 5K-6K, its not worth it, all cars break, even Toyota's, even if its less likely.

I do agree with what you said....but: can I ask you were do you maintain your cars? do you go to the dealership or to a shop? Scotty I have a 2003 Toyota Sequoia with 348k on it and I'm the original owner. It is by far the best buying decision I have ever made. Twenty-five years ago I would have never bought a Japanese car. The last America I owned was a 99 Grand Cherokee with the inline 6, nice engine but the rest of the mechanicals on that car were total crap. After six years of ownership it was an endless money pit. I even went to work at a dealer that sold the newer versions of that car, what a nightmare. My wife driven the Sequoia for 10 years before I got to use it regularly. Scotty, I must say it's a shame that domestic car companies are so short sighted and do not respect the customer by offering a good product that last. The Japanese has taken years to build a quality reputation for which Honda and Toyota continue today. Thank you for your good work and informative videos.

I love our Subaru Foresters. I have a '99, hubs has a 2000. Both are automatic and well over 200K miles, and were when we bought them used within the last 2 years. I paid $1000 for my '99; he paid $800 for his, which is even a sports model. We drive them everywhere. This is my 2nd Subaru. My first was a '98 Legacy Sport, Canadian, manual shift. I had it for about five years when it finally rusted beyond repair; sold it for the engine. After that I had a '98 Honda CRV and loved that baby! Unfortunately, the shop that replaced the transmission did NOT use genuine Honda fluid in it and it ruined the engine after a couple of years. But, we had it almost five years before trading it in and got $1000 on the trade. Way back in the day I had a '79 Toyota Celica and then an '81 Celica; both manual shift and loved them both. I was also looking for a used RAV4 when we bought my '99 Forester, but if a RAV4 had come up first, I'd have bought one.

Being a Chevy guy when I was young, I became very frustrated with their quality during the 80s and 90s. Since 1993 my wife and I have owned 4 Toyota Camrys and 2 Honda Accords . To me Toyota makes the best cars. The Hondas are good but I have had to replace more on them than my Toyotas .

I had 2 Chevy Prizms ( they had Toyota engines and transmissions ) not one of them got over 140,000 miles and had major problems after 100,00 miles. I have a 2013 Kia Rio with 220,000 miles I am retired now but still drive it. It has had 3 sets of brakes a battery a belt and a alternator. Also 3 sets of tires and of course oil changes. I think the thing that brings Nissan down is that Jatco CVT. Their engines aren't nearly as good as Toyota or Honda anymore but they are at least somewhat better than a Hyundai/Kia. It seems most Hyundai or Kia engines when they get above 80,000 miles start getting loud valve clacking, oil burning, or head gasket blowing.

Hi Scotty, my son has a 2005 Maxima and with over a 150k miles on the one you showed, I would have expected that they have already replaced the timing chain. We had to recently do that for his car. Running great after that, but you are spot on with A/C. Changed that earlier this year on his. He replaced about 135k. However, with the cost of cars now with all the shortages, it would be impossible to replace with a car that performs like his for less than the repairs.
