Of all your videos, if someone could only see one of them, this would be near the top, if not the top choice of videos to choose. In high school I worked at a tire shop (long before there were OSHA regs preventing 16 year olds from working split rim wheels)... we were an honest tire shop... people would come in with the braking issues as you described last and we never tried to over-sell... we offered free rotations and flat repairs regardless if they were tires bought from us and solved the customer problem for free by rotating the great rear tires to the front. That free service gained us a lifetime customer. They owned several cars and a panel van and brought them all to us for "the full boat" (tires, brakes,, alignment and more)... and our policy of doing only what is best for the customer brought in so much revenue that we continuously had the best sales in the district even though we were the smallest of their shops located in the sticks of the county. People would pass five of the other shops our company owned just to come to us... Treating the customer with respect and professionalism pays back in spades!

The "we only put new tires on the back" policy is universal to tire shops, and it is stupid. They always state it is somehow "dangerous". The only thing that you can do it either rotate the tires yourself or just pull the front wheels (if you have another car) and bring them to the tire shop to have them replaced.

Here's a story for you... bought four struts for my 99 Honda accord. Replaced the front ones first, then had to leave. Noticed when I went over a speed bump or dip in the road, my car bottomed out badly. So once back home, the rear struts were replaced, no more bottoming out. Having all new struts replaced was like driving on clouds. Even my young kids noticed a better and smoother ride. My car had 200k miles on it and thought it was a good idea to change out the struts for a safer drive for better stopping time on a dime.

I have successfully used Deepwoods off aerosol to clean/restore old headlights to a very usable condition. If you have a newer car, probably just use the stuff Scotty recommends. I found that applying it when it’s about 75° out got the most benefit. Use a lint free cloth, nitrile gloves, and a well ventilated area. Don’t smoke while you’re doing this :-) .give the application no more than 30 seconds (don’t let it dry) then wipe. If you need to repeat, go ahead and do that. I did this with Ford Toyota, Kia and Dodge. It would be best to remove the headlight assembly to clean it. After you’re done And the the headlight is conditioned AND DRY, go ahead and wash it with soapy water and then use the stuff Scotty recommends.

Almost everyone in General Aviation and Gliding uses Plexus on their Canopies. Clean the bugs off with water, then dry with a microfibre cloth. Then spray the Plexus on very leniently, wait 20 seconds and wipe off with a dry microfibre, and the screen is as sharp as a mirror. ( don't wait much more than 30 seconds as the spray will dry.) It re-plasticises the outer layer of the plexiglass to avoid brittleness.

I am glad the "new tires on the rear" argument was mentioned. Logic tells me the front wheels do all of the steering, all of the acceleration on a front drive car, and most of the braking. Why put the tires with more wear on the front? Put the new tires on the front. I do exactly what Scotty says to do.

I have my reservations about using cooling system sealants like Bars Stop Leak. I bought a used 1992 Honda Accord for my son some years back. After the engine would warm up, it would begin surging. It would begin to rev up then down. I finally found the root of the problem to be in the Idle Air Control Valve. The small ports that allow engine coolant to flow through the valve were completely plugged with stop leak. I had to take the valve all apart and carefully drill out all the crap that had built up solid in the valve body. After thoroughly cleaning the valve and reinstalling it, the engine ran great. Apparently some lazy previous owner had dumped a lot of this crap into the cooling system to try and fix a leak. I also fixed the leak properly by replacing a steel coolant pipe that was rusted out.

Only matters for low-traction road conditions when you are cornering too hard for the conditions present. Aka it stops the stupid people from killing themselves as quickly. Anyone who's ever tried drifting a front wheel drive vehicle gets it. You get good bite on the rear and less bite on the fronts, and you slide both sets on loose gravel. You have good fronts and bald rears, you slide the rear and psuedo-drift the corner. That's really it. Some well intentioned parent gave their teen this advice to keep them from killing themselves by spinning the rear out in front of the car on a gravel, and they just kept that idea and now spread it from the tire shop they work at.

In the case of Spark Plugs, sometimes replacing just 1 will result in THAT cylinder throwing a misfire code AGAIN. Subaru recommends plugs every 60k. I picked up my 15' STi with 66k on it so I assumed one of 2 possibilities. Either they've all been replaced recently, or not a damn 1. Welp, I was wrong. Cylinder #1 was replaced with a Denso, and the rest were NGK factory plugs. Well past their recommended replacement time. Guess which cylinder threw the misfire? #1. Newest plug didn't work well with the others. So naturally I replaced all 4 with NGKs. No more misfires. At all. Replacing in sets is ALWAYS recommended for plugs. Laziness oftentimes results in MORE work over-all. Do it right the 1st time and save yourself extra headaches.

I'm wondering if they have that rear tire policy so that when turning (especially in slippery conditions) it keeps your car from fish tailing. Sure, having the new tires in the front makes sense from a driving and braking point of view, but when you're driving around in less than ideal conditions, having them in the back would be a good idea for more total vehicle control. But as he said, it IS best to buy 4 new tires. If you could put $20 aside every month, you can buy a new set of tires in just 2-3 years (obviously depending on the car and the type of tire). Well before most recommended tire replacement dates.

Here in Argentina even car manuals recommend rotating the tires every 6.000 miles or so (in older cars manuals, it even recommended changing them from left to right! Crazy, ain't it?). The tires in my Chevrolet Cruze have 40.000 miles on them, have been rotated 3 times, and while -granted- it isn't a sport car, it did not feel unstable at any speed it could reach... let alone legal speeds.

😂 you're right about the sparkplugs.I once had a brand new 1995 Pontiac Trans Am that I bought brand new in 1995. I rode it to work everyday. I'm 30:49 1998 the plugs began misfiring you could hear it I couldn't get a mechanic to schedule a date to change them because I had to work and they were closed on weekends. So I changed them myself. I changed all sparkplugs in my V-8 engine except for the two plugs in the main back because I couldn't reach them. I drove to work for awhile then one evening on the interstate the car died, the motor stopped and the power steering quit working. And I pulled to the side of road and had to get towed. Running the V-8 engine with the two bad back plugs caused the electronic ignition to go out.

If you do anything diy definitely get an online subscription to something. Even if you don't do anything diy, I would still recommend it; you can at least get an idea on parts and labor that a shop will quote you for a repair. I like the interface for all data diy over Chilton but they're both a solid choice!

I always loved changing headlights on a Chevy traverse when I was a lube tech, paid 6/10ths of an hour. Most people have to remove the wheel well to get to the lights, but I have small hands and can do it pretty quick. Easy money lol. It’d be nice if people could learn how to do some work to their cars. Brakes and oil changes most of the time are so easy. A basic socket set and a pair of channel lock pliers will get you going.

That tire thing is real and annoying. Took my car into multiple tire shops to get a rotation, even left my car for hours in line to have my tires rotated only to be told that they couldn't do it because the higher tread tires must be in the back due to their policy. Not sure if its true but I heard they do not want to be sued for the on in a million chance you get into a hydroplane accident and sue the tire shop. TLDR: Tire shops WONT rotate tires

  • @Thanatos2996

Interesting point on the front vs rear for new tires. My understanding of the logic was that, in a low traction situation, you want the grippier tires on the back so it doesn’t want to kick the back out when you need to brake hard. I won’t be changing just one axle in the foreseeable future, but it’s good to know there can be other considerations.
