I count myself lucky my neighbor is a mechanic. He's good, but even he admits there's stuff he can't do once in a while, depending on the job. I still get sent in the right direction with guidance if it's one of those situations. But an honest mechanic is irreplaceable!

I can't do the alignment. So I take it to the shop for that. I don't have the evacuation and charge system for the AC either. So I have to keep that all connected, when I do major work on my car. But indeed, I have saved thousands, fixing my own stuff. As a mechanic, I like listening to Scotty. Sometimes, I don't agree with him. But that's not very often. Yes, I end up fixing everyone's vehicle, for family and friends. LOL

Must read! My daughter in lookn 4 her 1st car, I felt bad! I told her no on every car she found except 1! 2011 Toyota corolla. She sent me a text this morning, dad,... everybody else's car needs fixing except mine. :))))

30 years ago when I was 18 I had an S15 Jimmy... I changed the ball joints, tie rods, link pins and struts... with all that changed I took it to Advanced Auto to have an alignment done. I took it for the appointment and waited 2.5 hours and went to check out and was told that it was over $300 more then the $75 I was quoted... They said it was that the ball joints needed spun... I laughed in the service writers face and asked him how much wear 10 miles give to a ball joint as they were just changed... he went and talked to the mechanic and 10 more minutes later removed all other charges...

It's sad that it's not just a few bad eggs in the bunch. To find an honest and knowledgeable mechanic is truly a needle in a haystack, at least where I live. I can't think of the first shop or person that is knowledgeable, honest and doesn't overcharge in my area. The last mechanic I went to for my previous car that I was told was the best guy in the area was very proud when it came to the bill. I noticed a pattern and the very last time I went to him, before he told me the amount, I asked "Is this gonna be a 600, 800 or 1000 dollar trip like all the other times?" He kinda huffed and puffed about that one. As I learned more about car mechanics, it was awful how bad he was ripping me and everyone else off. Now I have a good, low mileage Civic that I have owned since day one that I have left stock. It's simple, I follow Scotty's maintenance advice and it just goes down the road like a treat.

There's only 1 good mechanic shop in my area. They're honest, knowledgeable but they source expensive parts. So I've learned to ask them for the part OEM number and order a cheap part myself.

Crafty scams in the auto repair business has been around a long time. One of my dad's friends was scammed for a decade over his regular maintenance. The guy put his Oldsmobile up on the hoist went and ate his lunch, (did nothing apart from eat lunch) Billed him for oil/filter/greasing etc. Then one day he had to take a trip to visit family and stopped at an out of area garage where their mechanic was really upset with the guy! "You realize this car is a hazard to drive"?! The ball joints are falling out, the oil is black goop, the filter clogged solid etc the brakes worn past the limit... He had to scrap his 10 years old Cutlass on the spot, the mechanic condemned it as unfit for the road.

Bad Mechanics are giving the industry a bad name and CBC Marketplace did an investigation on bad mechanics and bringing their scams into the spotlight and Scotty is continuing this awareness campaign.

You know Scotty's good and knows what he's doing, because his troubleshooting process is excellent. Skilled troubleshooting is what makes any technician a large cut above the rest. Simply being able to fix something is only the baseline. Poor troubleshooting leads to poor fixes, replacing parts that aren't at fault, spending a lot of time wasted, etc. Huge difference.

These scammers need to be put out of business.

I'm lucky to have a friend that runs an honest shop!! Randy Woods (Woods Automotive Johnson City, TN). I do a lot of maintenance and repairs myself, but if it's beyond my comfort level or I don't have the time to do it myself I and many of my Family/Friends take stuff to him. In 24 years I've only had one issue with a repair. Took back to Randy and it actually a bad egr value from the parts supplier he was using at that time. He fixed the problem within a day and explained what had happened. There was no charge on the 2nd repair, but several apologies! Didn't deter me from going back to him! Honest Guy + Honest Shop = now very good friend!

I am glad you are still giving them hell for their incompetence.

My ex wife took daughters new Jeep back to the Jeep dealership she bought it from for the FREE oil changes and tire rotation. Well after second so called rotation I look at her front tires and they were cupping. You could tell they never rotated them and tires were making growling noise . I told her to demand new tires on front as it’s obvious with only 12.000 miles only the front tires were cupped. After a long fight with several mangers they replaced the two tires said the looked at old cameras database and saw the technician they fired not ever rotating customer cars

For #2, I'd contact the insurance company who paid for the repair and request that be corrected at their cost.

My Prius w 415,000 miles has no problems except this clunk. My mechanic said it wasn't a problem. 150,000 miles after he said that it's still clunking but runs perfectly

4th mechanic scam: Them not coming to you to you check the car before they buy it. Their loss

Or pay using a good credit/bank card so you can dispute the charges. Just make sure you keep all the paperwork and get the job done right somewhere. Have them verify it wasn't done properly and get docs for all that as well. If it ever comes to a court or credit bureau issue, you have the evidence for judgement in your favor. Likely it won't come to that since they canned the scrub who couldn't perform.

Scotty, I am glad you put out these videos. Especially this one about three scams. I think too many people take their car to a shop and aren't aware that they sometimes get ripped off. I used to do most of the light mechanical and body work on my own cars but not so much anymore even though I have the code reader and all of my tools. My body just doesn't bend so easily anymore.

Love watching a master craftsman at work.

I always change a timing belt at 60,000 miles, & if you have a front-wheei-drive car, I was always able to almost double the life of the replacement belt by leaving the un-necesssary plastic cover OFF after the 1st belt change, since all that cover did was oveaheat the belt to begin with, which was why the belt needed to be replaced to begin with. Just a suggestion from a retired "wrench-turner".

You also run an increased risk of foreign object damage. Even dropping a socket while the engine is running can be catastrophic. An underhood cat or other visitor that destroys an serpentine belt is "irritating." But a timing belt in an interference engine. Klunk.. As cheap as cars have gotten, if engineers thought they could get by without them, they would.

Water in summer in TN? No, sir. You need a mint julep or an Uncle John Daniels. Works perfectly fine. 🤣

At 23:00 it reminds me of my late father's 1996 Aussie-built Toyota Camry. Dad had a problem with aesthetics but kept it to his own regular services. For the falling roof trim, up went tacks. I now have it and is a top daily driver. Faded paint, never been in a crash, etc

These days its really hard to find a competent, honest mechanic - they are as rare as hen's teeth.

I have a 97 Celica 2.2 5SFE 233,000 miles, I plan to change the timing belt and water pump myself. Although I could afford to take it to a garage I'll buy the kit and do it, it'll take me four times as long, but at the end I know it will be done right because I will take my time and do it right using the correct tools and the new parts will be Aisin. All the old gasket material will be removed and surfaces and parts will be cleaned, and I will use Aisin parts. Where appropriate I will put never-seize on all of the bolts I put back on. There WILL be frustration along the way, the same as many of the other jobs I've completed on the car, but at the end of it I would have learnt something, and saved money.

Some Tundras had recalls on the front suspension. I've seen many of them collapse while they were being driven. The entire wheel buckles and tucks under the truck. We had one at work that it happened to. Scary as hell.

Those 2.4 liters are known for timing Mine was doing the same as the stratus and it turned out the garage didn’t replace the guides Another garage replaced the guides and the shaking stopped

The Upper strut mounts do wear out. When he gets his struts replaced, have them replace that as well. He needs to do a 4 wheel alignment.

I liked my '02 tundra better than my '21. Best used truck you can get your hands on.

My 2004 Acura RL made the same clunking noise when turning the steering wheel to the left. Turned out to be the left steering rack bushing deteriorated..It was observable when I had my wife turn the steering wheel when parked. Costs me $275.00 to have all the steering rack bushings replaced.

Think my Daughters 06 TL has same problem

The tire discounters shop across from where I live got me for a couple of thousand in repairs on my Cadillac XTS such as new wheel bearing assemblies all the way around and one of them failed already in a few months! Then I take it in and realize they didn't bother doing the four wheel alignment each time they had changed something and hadn't aligned it for like over a year or two! I said align this thing is guaranteed for life. They supposedly do a four wheel alignment and then show me the paperwork and the right rear got worse. He tried to tell me oh when you change the front it makes the rear worse. Unreal. I won't be going back there ever again cuz you can tell they get pissy and the so-called mechanics are out there laughing and just banging crap around. They retaliate by screwing something else up hoping you'll come back to fix that.

My 2006 Toyota van did the same thing. Changed out the top bearing of the strut assembly as the bearing was rusted out. Dirt and leaves from the windshield get into the assembly causing it to rust out.

Thanks for your video. I learn a lot. The only bad news is that the government denies financial assistance to study professional mechanics for seniors ( only from 18 to 60 years old). I am 66 years old and in better shape than my 58 years old doctor ( he is sedentary and I still street bike and do all the house work including PMCS mechanics).

Mmm at my shop in Australia if I see a vehicle like the first Toyota. With tyres like that I will immediately inform the customer that it is not roadworthy & therefore not safe to drive. the tyres must be replaced & wheel alignment performed ASAP.

Wish I had my former mechanic back. He had a "partner" do some work while he was off last year. Cost me nearly $900 for a new battery and brake repair. Brakes still failing. I went back to have the partner inspect his work, he was too busy. He said call back for an appointment. But the "office staff" (girlfriend) claims they have no openings right now... The excellent original mechanic was referred from the local church deacon. His work was honest and reasonable. And he fixed things. Has life changed that much? Is the era of knowing good mechanics over? Except for Scotty... I'm too far from your location.

This is why it's so difficult to own a used vehicle in America now-a-days.

It’s a huge box. Also Insurance people ,car salespeople, the beautifully lady behind the desk trying to sale you the financing, the gap insurance the extended warranty, prep fees,delivery charges. All you want to do is say yes to everything because you want to ogle awhile longer. Also aggravating after you just spent 5 or 6 hours making what you thought was going to be the out the door price. All of which you pay interest on for the duration of the loan. people that sale for a living have to be taken with a dose of skepticism.

In defense of mechanics: it's not any easy business. It is a lot of physical activity all day long, often in awkward positions, messing around with nasty/toxic chemicals/dust, the problems are not always so simple to figure out, time is money, there's major expenses involved in tools and equipment and rent/building expenses and taxes, and there's income taxes, etc. And so many vehicles all with different engineering and construction and specifications, etc. It's not easy to make a halfway decent living and it's strenuous work day after day that requires a lot of knowledge and experience to be even halfway effective.

I've worked on cars and trucks for 20 years....I'd never leave someone with a bad timing job....there's no excuse...none.

Scotty, i have a 2012 Titan, 209K miles, new-ish uppler/lower control arms with sealed ball joints, new tie rod ends WITH grease fittings. everytime I turn left (mostly) i hear a squeak when it's dry. i've used a grease needle for the sealed ball joints and even used spray grease for the control arm bushings. Nothing seems to help in the long run. It's only quiet when it's raining or has rained (clearly something is getting lubed by the water). I just now sprayed the top of the strut assembly with WD-40 and will let it sit overnight. I'll follow up if there's any improvement. been watching you for several years now. Love the videos!!

Always check your oil after you paid for an oil change, lots of scammers out there. Better yet, just change your own oil unless you own an EV.

10:15 It is both to heat the motor and to regulate it at proper temperature, that is; keep it warm. The motor oil will reach optimum ability to lubricate generally above 160ﾟF and start to fall off over 230 or so. That is also why you could only buy summer thermostats at 160- not below- and 180 was a standard and 195 was the high temp.

after a front end wreck, and a nissan dealer did a 7000 repair, I kept getting front tires w/ that inner bald spot on both front tires. 3 pairs, over two years, got 3 front end alignments, and burned three sets of front tires, alignment didn't help. a local mech w/ same pick up (nissan frontier, 98 4 x 4) had same problem, had to retighten the whole frame

I've got a 2010 Corolla that makes a similar noise when I make right turns to #1 issue with the Tundra. I've tried globbing some grease down on the larger bushings near the lower control arms but no change. I'll have to try some Tri-Flow out on the shocks soon, maybe this will be a way to get the noise to go away for a while periodically. Keep it up Scotty!!

The timing cover needs to come off and be retimed. Paint peeling and the headliner are eyesores but the car probably has a lot of life left in it. At least it's not the 2.7 .

Check the fan clutch if it has one.

89 Ford Probe with 4cyl. Alternator. They charged over $500 to replace it. Half that was just for the Stock Alternator. Other half was to remove the Exhaust to get to it... 1yr later, it goes out again. Got a Alternator at a Chain Store for $35... Did the job myself. Remove the exhaust??? Hell No.. Just pulled on it enough to move it a Inch over and Shoved the Alt up in there and had it changed in 20 minutes.. Not no 2 hours like the repair shop.

The fact they lied about what parts they replaced would make me go after them.

Why I always test drive after a repair. If I'm not happy,I go back immediately!

Friend had an accord ten years old or so. Took it to their dealer cause it was making a rattle in the back. They drove it didn't hear anything told him that he was losing it and to just turn the radio up. I told him to take it to the other dealer, heard way better stories from them. They took it for a spin and found that the sway bar links were snapped and the problem went away with some new ones. The funny thing is that the first dealer wasn't always like that. Places change, people come and go. Always gotta be careful.

TPMS is a really stupid feature. Each tire monitor has a battery in it & each wheel/tire has to be separated to replace the battery. What a money making SCAM for a feature that "ISN'T NEEDED". For Decades & Decades everybody used tire pressure gauges. 😲😲😲

Don't blame the technician . he or she is usually is obeying instructions from the Owner. i know my boss told me to charge for something if nothing was wrong. despite the fact he hated being treated that way when he had work performed. i had no control how much customer service charged. i am retired now. but i told my boss i wanted nothing to do with charging a customer when nothing was needed.

The tundra in this video has a timing BELT, this engine (2uzfe) is interference. Don't use live data to determine if the belt is good or bad replace at correct intervals.

Can you help with my Tacoma mystery engine shaking? I got a 1996 Tacoma 2.4 engine,, manual trans. Sometimes when I come to a stoplight the engine shakes like crazy, then when I come to the next stoplight the engine is very smooth. I have new cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires. I don't understand why it sometimes shakes and sometimes not. Been doing this for four years.

My 13 actually makes that exact same sound just not as loud, definitely good to know that your grandson’s 2nd gen does it too, my 13 is lifted so I thought there was an issue with the lift. Definitely gonna check out the strut tower to make sure it’s not an issue. Been making it since I bought it so I’m glad it’s *most likely* not a serious issue

I would have bet on a partially plugged radiator. I had the same symptoms on a Chevy van many years ago and that was the cure.

Sounds like a simple misunderstanding. Don't think any mechanic in 2020+ would only charge $200 to replace 2 ball joints??? 200 to replace the stabilizer links sound a lot more like it.. and is actually not a bad price for that since those stabilizers are about $30 a piece or more b4 markup.
