Captain America and the Avengers! Data East brings a Marvel Beat Em Up to Arcades

SUPPORT THE CHANNEL : / videogameesoterica
If you watch my channel whatsoever you will know some things about my retro gaming tastes; I love arcade beat em ups and I love obscure retro games...so put those two things together and...well you get one of Data East's more charming arcade games...Captain America and the Avengers! It wasn't just Capcom making awesome Marvel video games back in the day or Sega making Spider Man video games...Data East got in on the superhero video game action too!
Luckily this runs on MAME via MAME emulation so it can be enhoyed by all and if you need a MAME tutorial I have one on my channel....just check the emulation night school playlist!
But its definitely an arcade hidden gem of jank as good luck finding it these days!

Hello and welcome to "The Unported Playlist"
So we decided to extend this playlist from 10 games to does it even matter what the count is anymore? lol it's a lot!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!
I am playing this via Teknoparrot emulation on my Windows 10 machine so technically its PC Gaming! that makes this a PC GAMER channel lol.

For a moment I thought this video was about the unreleased prototype "Out of the Vortex" that was just added to HP.

Nope but that’s on my list for work today
I remember getting this as a kid on the snes after playing it in the arcade and feeling something was “off”. Got the pcb during the pandemic and it’s been a fun stroll through memory lane. Games like this and Congo’s Caper make me miss Data East.

Data East could make some great games for sure
So “Taco” was an English mistranslation of “tako” which is the Japanese word for “squid” lol. Pretty funny 😄 I had the Genesis port of this game as a kid and was obsessed with it! Didn’t play the arcade original until years later and I had the muscle memory to play it pretty well, since the Genesis port is gameplay-wise very faithful to the arcade. Thanks again for your nostalgic content!

"tako" (蛸) is octopus which is more commonly written in the katakana syllabary denoting foreign words so a localizer would be very confused if not a native bilingual; squid is "ika"
This one is certainly an underrated game, that's for sure

I used to play this game with a friend on his mega drive. I thought it was quite janky but we still had some good co-op fun.

Absolutely loved this one as a kid. 8 year old me pumped a silly amount of quarters into that cab. Even enjoyed the console versions. Good times.

I played this at the arcade, although I forgot where. The flying stages and the sentinel boss blew my mind back in the day.

Not a great game, but a fun one, and I have a ton of fuzzy and warm memories of my dad and I cranking countless quarters into this game at our local arcade. We would go watch a movie every weekend, and then we would go and "beat a game" at the arcade. This game was frequently included in the rotation. Thanks for covering this one!

Nowadays it's more rare to find the 4-player Avengers cab than it is to find the 6-player X-Men cab.

I credit feeded through this with my brother Olof at a convention this spring. And NO WAY we would one credit it! We found the bosses to be rather spongy, their last health took ages to wear down. We had trouble not being hit by various ranged attacks too. Perhaps we played it wrong, but we found it very shallow. Either hit baddies with the same attack over and over, or throw stuff at them? Some jump attack too. The corny cut scenes were the only saving grace for us, tedium set in while wading through the hordes.

Yes the bosses feel designed to steal a few more quarters than the rest of the game
Reminds me a lot of Taito's Superman in a lotta respects.

Mech taco should be a new thing on the Taco Bell menu. I never actually played this beat em up but I’ve always thought it looks cool. Hopefully they complete the Saturn port

Yeah I have this PCB, with a weird bug that doesn't display the names of the bosses you face. Really strange. I love the painterly backgrounds.

Def give it a shot
definitely one of my favorite arcade superhero games! (outside of the stuff like konami's x-men or capcom's marvel stuff) I think my favorite part of the game is fighting the bosses, and the way the music changes up once they get down to that last sliver of health, if that doesn't get you pumped to finish the fight, I don't know what will!! shame it never got ported either in the johnny turbo line (since he had all the data east stuff for a while) or some other way (at least outside of arcade 1up, not everyone has A1up money!) with the rise in popularity of the MCU!
