During the summer of 2017, large schools of menhaden showed up here on Cape Cod. Schools of thousands of menhaden could be seen just offshore many of Cape Cod's beaches.
On this particular day I was working on my new house, which my wife and I had just purchased and were renovating. A call from a friend came in during the early afternoon, informing me that huge striped bass were feeding on menhaden off one of the Cape's beaches.
I hustled to ready my kayak and drove as quickly (and safely!) as I could to where my friend had reported the action. Instantly I saw the menhaden schools and could see they were being attacked by not just huge striped bass, but huge bluefish and gigantic seals as well.
I had only been fly fishing for a few months, so my casting technique was pretty rough!
I hooked 3 monster striped bass, with two of the fish bending the hooks on my fly and escaping. Fortunately one of the largest of the trip, a beautiful 46 inch striper, did not come unbuttoned and I was able to successful land, revive and release her.
Plus at the 31 minute mark in the video I receive a phone call from my loving wife Lauren. Watch until the end and LMK if you can relate!!! LOL
Back in 2017 I published a much shorter version of this video which you can access here ( • Fly Fishing Cape Cod f... ). Today I thought it'd be cool to share the full 34 minute video from the trip. What an experience it was!
I hope you enjoy ✌🏻
Timestamps:
00:10 - shot of the fly I'm using
00:41 - seal sighting!
01:00 - missed strike from a big bass
01:40 - huge striper rolls behind kayak, big hookup!
From the 2 minute mark on, I get towed around for close to 2 miles as I fight the striper and try to avoid the seals.
22:00 - landing striped bass next to the kayak
22:50 - cool underwater shot of striper
24:29 - got him!
26:25 - starting the long process of reviving the fish before release
28:58 - underwater footage of reviving striped bass
30:15 - striper swims away
31:00 - surprise phone call from my wife!

I am from the other side of the country, the Pacific Northwest. YT just suggested this video. I was just back at Cape Cod and was lucky enough to catch two, my first Stripers on a fly from a boat that my wife and I chartered. I got them on a 6 wt and on a fly that works in my home waters (we don't have Stripers here but we do have several species we can fish for in saltwater). I did not measure them but I estimate they were 26" or so. The next day I got two from the beach (Atlantic side). These were about 18" or so, also on a fly and the same 6 wt but a smaller version of the same pattern. I can definitely see why they got their reputation. I'm so lucky my wife is totally supportive of my fishing but we are also in a different phase of life. We've been retired for five years. Tight lines! I'll be back!

Nice, Phlip Wilson would be proud. Heading there next year for stripes, around end of July first week of August. Hopefully fishing for them is good around the Cape somewhere. Ill be bringing all types of tackle, including fly gear. Looking for some local knowledge to get introduced to some scaley critters. Any help would be appreciated. Great fish brother.

Watching this is like an updated version of the classic; "The Old Man and the Sea" by Hemingway.. "The Young Man and the Sea" .... Keep your hand on the grip! Quickest way to snap your rod is to try to put more presure by reaching above the grip. Always try to pull big fish off balance, by pulling them to the side, when they adjust, then pull them to the other side, you could even work that cow to the beach. Please Be Well, and Stay Strong PS. There are plenty of How to fight, and land big fish on the fly. BTW- That cow had to be around 44 pounds. GO YOU!!!

@@MyFishingCapeCod Good Sir, you are graciously kind! After WW II my father worked as a caretaker of a local beach Here in The Forgotten Borough of NYC. I was conceived, and raised in the house on that beach. I spent the earliest years of my life as the feral prince of Midland Beach, with a ruby spaniel freely roaming that beach. When my mother wanted to know where I was, she’d wisely call “Debbie” and the cocker would pick up her head and bark a reply. More than likely my mother would find me asleep in an old 16’ wooden skiff my father kept on the side of the house. Being the son, of a son, of a fisherman, fishing is in my D.N.A. I have been beached for the last dozen years taking care of my folks in these final years. With their passing, I decided to pick the fly rod and head for the beach. “By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.” Confucius At almost 70 to update myself, method 2 is my only realistic choice. So, I took myself back to school @ You Tube University! That is where I found you! Orvis has a very good series on “Long Rods”, and “Salt Water.” Please Be Well, and Stay Strong, I am looking forward to your future uploads! Captain Bill Bulla

The part of your fly line that gives it strength is the mono or braided core, not the polymer float or sink coating. Don’t worry about that for strength unless it gets to the core. Nice fish. I catch Stripers on the fly in freshwater in Texas.
