Canton Texas Tornado - April 29, 2017 RAW footage
This was the worse of five tornadoes impacting Canton Texas and vicinity. Copyright Hank Schyma 2017. For licensing 4K tornado footage contact hankschyma@gmail.com
At least two significant tornadoes impacted Canton Texas and vicinity, this being the second significant. In all, I witnessed five tornadoes on this day. This tornado tracked up highway 19 and passed just east of town. Northeast of Canton near Grand Saline I ran across the wrath of this beast. Several homes had high end EF2 to EF3 damage and several cars had been tossed. Along with several other locals, I searched the cars for people and found none. It didn't occur to me to check a pile of rubble as I had no idea it was once a house. There a woman with minor injuries to her head and her husband with neck or back injuries rode out the tornado under a mattress. I was able to assist the woman to a hospital as we counted out blessings. More later...

Dear Pecks Hank, As a young teenager who's dream is to one day become an operational meteorologist, I just want to take a minute to thank you. No, seriously, thank you so much. You're an immense inspiration to me and many other people that dream of becoming meteorologists and storm chasers. Before starting high school, there were tons of kids that made fun of me for wanting to be an operational meteorologist. They had claimed that my dream job was "stupid" and "silly" and "could be done by anyone without trying". It's people like you that I'm able to use as an example for how important meteorologists and storm chasers are. Being a meteorologist or storm chaser isn't just about being some weirdo that drives their pickup truck straight at a tornado while screaming "Yeehah!". I view it as a responsibility someone takes to save lives every single day. No two days are the same with this job, and you need to be ready to act at anytime. Next time someone brushes off meteorologists and storm chasers as freaks with unimportant roles, I'm showing them this video. I'm not even sure if you'll see this Pecos, but hopefully we'll cross paths one day. It would be an honor to meet you. Sincerely, A teenager who's on her way to college and graduating with a bachelor's degree in atmospheric sciences

i definitely agree with that, i was close to a tornado only twice in my life so far, and would not wish for them to hit anyone's neighborhood. In most cases families can get back to their life in those areas fairly quickly with the help of the community. People have all kinds of hateful things to say on the internet but when something like that happens we for the most part help each other which is great to see. Just remember material things are not important as long as you live through the situation then it can be rebuilt/reacquired i believe people in tornado alley feel that way or the people given the financial ability to leave would do so.

He also uses a program on his phone called RadarScope (I've seen it a couple of times on his videos). It's a good app that will show you all the radar images from the NWS, but also will show storm reports and storm direction. I know you can get it for Android and I presume it is also available for iPhone.

Pecks Bill, I commend you for doing what was right in going, first of all, to investigate whether anyone needed help, and then, after finding someone who needed medical attention, taking her to the hospital. God bless you for caring for folks in trouble. Sometimes the tornado chasers come across like children off on a great adventure, but it is clear you understand the gravity of what great damage these storms can produce. I hope the woman you helped is OK. Were you injured in any way? I held my breath, wondering if you were just a little too close to the funnel, or in "the bear's cage" as some like to call it. God give you discernment and wisdom in making decisions about your safety, and may He protect you from all harm.

You are the first chaser with the proper camera to record in live action, like HD. Nearly every other tornado video is like watching a movie, where the graphics are slowed and not very realistic. But you, sir, have AMAZING footage of LIVE ACTION swirling, rotating, home-video style imagery. It looks like I'm there in person! THANK YOU - no one else has been able to capture footage that plays back so real. I can't wait to see more.
I have followed your videos for a long time. I live in California so while I have a great appreciation and respect for tornados, I've never encountered one. That being said, my cousin lost her life in the Canton tornados. She lived in Fort Worth, Texas and was headed to Kansas with a friend. Our family out there was told by the judge that the tornado that struck their vehicle was at night and had a wind speed of 140 mph and knocked her through the passenger windshield, killing her instantly. It came from behind so while I am sure the weather was horrible, there is a good chance that they did not see it coming. Watching this footage brings so many emotions to see & understand what she saw in her final moments. It's very heartbreaking but I'm grateful for the clarity. Keep doing what you do to educate the public. Thank you for your love of humanity, and all that you do to help save lives while risking your own.
I am from canton and was at my mom and dads when this hit, even 3 years later this day still gets to me because it was non stop, but thank you for everything you did and the people you helped.

Riley Bruce but it did only moderate damage. Even though it hit an astounding wind circulation speed of nearly 300 MPH, no structure was hit by the full force of the tornado. Remember, the EF scale is mostly about the damage a tornado does over it's wind speed. On top of that, the El Reno tornado only killed 8 people, considering the fact it hit areas that were very lightly populated, reducing the amount of deaths. Take the Moore tornado as an example, it had a top wind speed of 210 mph, and it killed 27 people mostly because it spent most of it's time ripping some of the most populated areas of Moore. On top of that, It also got an EF5 rating because lots of the houses impacted were completely destroyed. But yes, the El Reno tornado was the second highest wind speed tornado in the world. (The highest was an estimated 318 mph.)
Once again you bring us a tour de force Hank! Great footage, commentary and overall production. Besides the chase you take on the good work of a first responder. You, my friend, are a marvel!
Hank's chasing wisdom shows in the quality of shots he gets. Another good one.

Tornados fascinate me so much , is it weird I really want to see one in person, there's none in the UK :(

The awesome, raw power of tornadoes is always so intriguing. Glad you were able to help the woman get to the hospital. I hope her husband will be ok. I do appreciate you film in 4K because I've had a 4K screen for a long time now and it's VERY rare I get to actually see how awesome my screen really is! And tornadoes in 4K is just fantastic! Anyway... glad that tornado missed the center of town. It's always so much worse when a tornado hits the highest populated areas. We've had nearly 7 inches of rain in the past 48 hours but no severe storms for me to get out and record. I just do it as a hobby. I started doing it more when I started severe storm spotting for the NWS about 10 years ago now.
That 4K camera is something else. Props to PH for (1) not giggling all throughout the video because he's seeing an impressive tornado . . . and (2) for actually going out to help people in need.
At my school we had a meteorologist / storm chaser visit us, he showed us a video of his only successful chase, but in it he and his friends were screaming BACK UP! But the tornado was a small one about a EF1 maybe EF2 and it was about 1 miles in front of them. I was going to bash my head against a wall. I maybe wrong but from watching your videos he was over reacting a bit.

Hank, it is awesome when you stop to help others. You motivate me to do the same. -- I could use a little guidance however. I decided to ask you because I've watched your videos often and respect what you do and how you conduct yourself. I am considering storm chasing almost solely to help others in the immediate aftermath, but I really don't know how to go about learning to find them beforehand. I know there are dangerous individuals that have no business being out there, but I just want to be in the area to help people and animals. I'm not in it for the footage and I don't want a website or KZread channel. -- I know I can handle it. I have two decades of emergency services employment and am still licensed, but I retired early to regain a human mentality. Still, I don't feel fulfilled just sitting here watching this when I'm so close to this area. I'm at my best when others are breaking down into complete chaos.
Pecos Hank I just discovered you're videos and I subscribed. You make videos worth watching because you're calm, cool and collected. Keep up the awesome work.
Best channel in the world. I'm an animal-saving Texan myself. I sat next to a Russian/ Uzbek pilot the other day who watches your videos too!! Its beautiful and terrifying all at the same time.
I was at The Breeder's concert in downtown Dallas that evening. I spent more time watching these storm in the radial velocity mode than I did watching the show.. SO many spin ups that evening!! Your footage on these are quite creepy. The size the lighting and your voice make this one of your scariest videos in my opinion Hank. I want to thank you for being, yeah just being. You're an amazing person.

I was in downtown Dallas last night at the Pixies show watching that crazy line of storms very intently on the PYKL3 radar app. I uploaded that app just a week ago. Best several dollars ever spent on NEXRAD. That was the first time I've left the house with it and I love how it shows my position relative to the storms. I've seen your inserts of similar views of you showing your position and I was intrigued by that ability. I felt kinda naked being away from the Ham radio at the house and not being tied into the SkyWarn Nets locally, leaving it in on the bench in Tarrant County. Time to make it mobile again! (W5RK) So much madness in the app's relative velocity views! Thanks for looking out for others Hank. Stay safe this season old man! Thanks for posting, Cheers!
@Pecos Hank Always love watching your storm footage. Also stepping up and helping the victims in between uploads.. My hats off to you sir.
