Tornado Damage Countdown: EF0 to EF5
Ғылым және технология
Examples of tornadoes rated EF-0 to EF-5 and the damage they cause. For licensing contact hankschyma@yahoo.com
After a destructive tornado occurs, the NWS surveys the damage to estimate the tornado's wind speeds. The tornadoes are then rated by
their intensity using the EF scale or Enhanced Fujita scale from the weakest EF0's to the rare incredibly powerful EF5's. In this video we'll observe examples of each as well as the damage each rated tornado can cause.
EF-O TORNADO:
Not all tornadoes have the strength to cause severe destruction, in fact about 75% of tornadoes in the USA are relatively weak falling in the EF0 to EF1 range. A tornado rated EF0 has wind speeds estimated between 65 to 85 mph. They can cause light roof damage including damage to gutters or siding, break branches off trees and push over shallow rooted trees.
EF-1 TORNADO:
EF1 rated tornadoes are stronger with estimated wind speeds from 86 - 110 mph. They cause moderate damage such as roofs severely
stripped, exterior doors ripped off and broken windows. Cars are moved and Mobile homes are badly damaged or overturned.
EF-2 TORNADO:
EF2's cause considerable damage with estimated wind speeds between 111 and 135 mph. Roofs are torn off well-constructed houses, mobile homes are completely destroyed, large trees snapped and cars are lifted off the ground.
EF-3 TORNADO:
EF3's have estimated wind speeds from 136 to 165 mph. They cause severe damage to well constructed houses and large buildings. Trains are overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars are tossed and structures with weak foundations are blown away some distance.
EF-4 TORNADO:
Tornadoes with wind speeds estimated from 166 to 200 mph cause devastating damage and are rated EF4s. Well constructed houses are completely leveled. Structures with weak foundations are blown away. Cars are thrown.
EF-5 TORNADO:
EF5's have estimated wind speeds over 200 mph. The damage from these monsters is incredible! Often at the impact site, there's nothing to see because nothing is left. Strong framed houses are lifted off foundations and carried considerable distances to disintegrate.
Automobile sized missiles fly through the air farther than 100 meters.
Even steel reinforced concrete structures are badly damaged.

force experienced by wind is a square function, because at higher wind speeds not only does more air hit you in terms of the volume of it, but its collision also carries more energy per particle since its traveling faster. its the same reason why driving at like 50mph uses half as much fuel as driving at like 80mph (made those numbers up, your mileage will vary - literally lmao), because air resistance doesnt increase linearly with its relative velocity. ignoring reduced wind force from reduced air pressure, an EF5 has more than three times the wind force on objects than an EF2 despite not even being twice as fast in terms of wind speed.

Yes. The EF scale is a damage scale, not an intensity scale.
I had an EF-0 touchdown on top of our barn while I was walking up the driveway one day after school. It put a big hole in the roof, knocked down some limbs, and twisted the corn. The tornado itself was rain wrapped and was nearly invisible.

Some researchers, scientists and chasers get offers but often turn them down. Imagine being used to chasing and researching for the pure passion and love of the storms and advancing knowledge of these beasts and then a network or company trying to tell you how, when and where to chase. Most people say no thank you and keep pursuing their dreams on the open prairies at their usual pace at their leisure.

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't like the way tornadoes are "rated". Damage only data is what categorizes a tornado and I think size and wind speed should also be considered when rating a tornado. It is the reason that the 2013 El Reno Tornado with estimated wind speeds over 295 mph and a size of 2.6 miles wide was only rated EF-3 while the 2013 Moore Tornado with estimated wind speeds of 210 mph and a size of 1.3 miles wide was rated an EF-5. Both tornadoes are very strong and very deadly, but because the Moore tornado went through populated areas and killed 24 people and the El Reno tornado only went over rural areas killing 8 people, the Moore tornado was rated higher than the El Reno tornado, even though scientific measurements prove that the El Reno tornado was bigger and stronger than the Moore tornado.

They should be, but until recently there were very few ground-level measurements of the winds directly. They built the system based off the information they had available (what was left after it went through), and haven't had time to catch up. Rebuilding the ratings system from scratch is not an easy feat - you can't just do it. You have to consult with engineers, physicists, meteorologists, insurance companies, public officials and emergency managers, and a whole heap of other people.
@PecosHank

The problem with rating them on their actual intensity is that unless there's a doppler really close by, we won't know the actual intensity at the surface and so only a tiny fraction would actually receive a rating.

This was very useful knowing how powerful each Tornado is, I thank you for this information Hank.
This once happened to me, but not that far from my old house. An EF1 tornado touched down in a forest not that far from my old house. And, that was July 22, 2015. And, I saw NOT ONE, but TWO funnel clouds, but thankfully they did not touch down. I was out on the road driving FAR away from my old house, and I realized there was a tornado warning from what the radio said in my car. Back then, I didn’t know a lot about tornadoes at all, but now I know a LOT more than back then. And when it happened, my heart started to beat extremely fast in fear. It was in tornado season. And not to mention, I’m living in TORNADO ALLEY in my country. It’s one moment in my life that I will always remember and never forget.
You taught me more then learning tornadoes at school Thanks
By far the most informative video on tornadoes that I have ever watched!
Man if I was teaching a class on weather, I would use this video to show my students what the differences are. That and my dad's old DVD that I used to watch so often. Speaking of Greensburg, I went to a weather conference a year after it happened and I watched a documentary on that tornado there. It's always so mind-blowing to see what happens when Mother Nature unleashes her rage.

Incredible KZread channel! Excellent information. Thank you
With the extreme fear and anxiety i get from weather, your videos are like therapy. The more awareness i have the more i feel i can identify things to help me cope better. Thank u for the information you share.
Good, pithy, comprehensive and practical overview of tornadoes. Thank you!
Love the videos/ channel Hank! I've always been fascinated by tornados. It takes a brave person to do what you do.
Thanks! I'm learning so much about severe weather thanks to you and other storm chasers!
Pecos Hank you’re the man, thanks for the video as always. I’m hoping to become a storm chaser one day myself so hopefully one day I’ll see ya out there man. Stay safe bro ✊
I am hyperfixating on tornadoes but your videos are the only ones I can watch without getting overstimulated. Thanks ‼️‼️🎀🎀🎀
I laughed so hard when it said, "and mess up hair dos"
I just love how people are driving during a tornado. They're like 'hey tornado, I gotta go to work tho.'
Absolutely love watching your videos brother for both learning about tornadoes, and the comedic side. I’ve got all your videos in a playlist for non stop action and awe…. And I’m also a supporter on Paetron. Can’t wait for some new content to add to the playlist and to watch over and over again. Keep safe out there bro, and hope this season is another good year for you.
Thanks! Very informative! I have been enjoying watching your vids. Have a safe and happy new year! ❤
I love your videos Hank and always watching them many times. You making them so interesting. Great job!

Hank would say that a nice bowl of cinnamon toast crunch comes pretty dang close.
I vividly remember the Greensberg storm. It was about 100 miles due west of me, but it generated the most intense lightning display I’ve ever seen. It was a beautiful little town, too- and it was wiped off the map. Anything that can pick up a fully loaded freight train and throw it more than a half mile is a force to be reckoned with.
I remember near the end of my sophomore year of high school, an EF-1 tornado touched down just a couple blocks away from my house in the middle of the night. On the bus ride to school the next day we passed through that block the tornado damaged. We all were stunned by the damage because in a couple of instances trees had fallen on someone's house. EDIT: There are a couple of tornado sirens within 2 blocks from the house I grew up in. So they woke me up at 3:30-4:00 in the morning.
Thanks Hank for clearing this up.

I love your videos Hank, I’ve always been interested in tornadoes and chasing them, but it’s very dangerous. But I still love watching your videos. Be careful out there bro! Hope you catch some good tornadoes in 2019!
Thanks for uploading videos even outside of "Tornado season"!
Informative :). Good video Hank
Man I love this channel, I keep finding myself coming back here, ngl this channel inspired me to see at least one tornado before I die.
Awesome work as always, Hank. :)

This is great info for people who are not weather savvy! I know a lot of friends that think the width of a tornado makes it rating and then I show them video of tornadoes like Pampa in 1995. Great info Hank!
Your videos are so interesting. Please stay safe Hank!
This is exactly what i was curious about and cant think of anyone better to explain it!
I heard that an Oklahoma tornado, in Moore I think, in 1999, the tornado's wind speed was only 1 mile an hour away form being an 'EF 6'.
@IGY6Brah

It was an EF6. 318mph wind speeds. Fastest wind ever recorded on earth. I was 1 mile away from the May 3rd 1999 tornado... The el Reno one in 2013 was the largest tornado ever, but not the highest wind speeds

Keaton Callicoat officially no, unofficially, May 3rd 1999 is accepted as an ef6

The EF scale is a damage scale, not a wind scale. So the extent of the damage determines the rating of the tornado. Having this in mind, there were quite a few tornados with more intense damage than Bridge Creek-Moore tornado and one that produce "scale-breaking" damage: Jarrell tornado. So, if they ever add EF6 to this scale, Jarrell tornado should be listed as one.

The only Tornado conceived of being an EF6 was the Jarrell 1997 Tornado. It was so violent and slow moving that it literally pulverized everything...a guy had a car collection of 50 and they weren't able to find anything bigger than a camshaft.

Mississippi_Man1 all of y’all dumb there isn’t any such thing as an ef6 nor are there any tornadoes officially or unofficially classified as an ef6

I live in Europe and I saw a tornado forming and sadly didn’t hit the ground, but I watched all you’re tornado videos so I knew how it formed and what to do if it hit the ground. Btw I love your videos I love tornados and storms

Current science suggests that the winds actually become organized from the ground up in most cases. This means a funnel cloud that doesn't reach the ground is evidence that well-organized tornado winds have already formed. This is frequently observed with spouts - possibly because it's easy to find spouts in clear air and observe the early stages. They start with a swirls of wind, visible as a dark spot on water or a whirl of leaves. This then turns into a ring of mist or dust, that might develop a funnel or tube of condensed fog. It has been more challenging to gather evidence for tornadoes below mesocyclones, but they seem to do the same thing.
Thank you Pecos Hank for explaining the differences of tornados
Here with the 12/10/21 outbreak. Thanks for the informative and well-done video!
I looked up Greensburg Kansas and it is eerily new. For a small town, everything looks new.

I am only 6 years old and I love studying about tornadoes and thank you for making videos about tornadoes and hail!
I am one that likes to study tornadoes on the side, alongside my GCSE's, and this video really helps with that! Thanks hank! :)

What I like about Hank's WX videos is that they are at once entertaining and very well produced, but they are also designed to teach about the subject featured. Each video a real learning experience and this old Kansas boy really appreciates your efforts, my friend. Best wishes!
