THE SUPERCELL - MOTHER OF STORMS

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Supercell and tornado compilation plus best storm time lapse footage in 4K. For licensing contact hankschyma@gmail.com
There are different breeds of thunderstorms. Each with their own characteristics. There are single celled storms. Often weak and short lived. Multi celled storms, sporadic and unorganized and squalls, organizing into dramatic lines that can stretch hundreds of miles. But the mother of all thunderstorms is the supercell.
Supercells are the least common mode of storms and their defining character is a deep, persistently rotating updraft called a mesocyclone. Supercells are often referred to as rotating thunderstorms. This rotating nature enables them to generate Torrential rainfall and severe winds, intense and continuous lightning activity, and enormous hail. It’s the supercell that is responsible for producing the majority of the worlds violent tornadoes.
Supercells can occur all over the world but in one location, they turn up with alarming frequency… Tornado Alley in the United States. Fewer than 30% of supercells produce tornadoes and scientists are still trying to understand why one supercell produces violent tornadoes and another does not.
Supercells come in 3 different classifications: The Low Precipitation supercell or LP, The Classic supercell and the high precipitation supercell or HP, where heavy rainfall shroud much of the internal storm structure.
They often form as one mode and transition to another. Once a supercell is on the roll, it can dominate the atmosphere persisting for hours and hours. Sometimes the atmosphere generates mixed modes. Storms with characteristics of other storm types.
Squalls with supercells imbedded in their lines, or hybrid cells with both squall and supercell structures. No two supercells are exactly the same. With their explosive energy and wind sheer sculpted beauty, being In their presence can be captivating or terrifying… or both. They are a dream scenario for nature photographers and time lapse photography truly captures their beauty. The mesocyclone twists the supercell into dramatic sky-scapes. Perhaps a storm that resembles stacked plates or one with tiers like upside-down wedding cake, or the alien invading mothership.
With the most powerful supercells, time lapse photography isn't necessary to capture their intense churning. The clouds moves so fast, the storm doesn’t appear to be from this world.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - this guy is light years ahead of Reid Timmer and should absolutely be starring in a National Geographic documentary role about tornadoes. His footage is second to none, he’s articulate, intelligent, conveys complex meteorological info. in an understandable way the layman can actually comprehend. He’s also funny. He’s one of the few people nowadays on KZread that I truly look forward to his next video. You know it won’t ever suck.

Or has he always just enjoyed them in their natural ephemeral state? I imagine that it would be too hard to try and get one to a freezer before it melted. I don't know, though. Thanks Hank, that was a good explanation. I wish I had known this information when I lived in Swaziland, Africa where in the months from October to December and February to March we would have thunderstorms that were about ten times of the typical thunderstorms in North America (maybe not in the midWest in Tornado Alley) but certainly in Canada. The height of the anvil clouds appeared to go up to 60,000 feet. The storms were so massive that they would cover almost the whole of Swaziland. They would usually occur every second or third day and begin building to the west in South Africa and gradually head in an easterly direction toward the Swazi lowveld, where I lived heading to the Mozambique escarpment. It would begin with the anvil cloud stretching from West to East, followed by the massive storm cell wall. In the space of ten minutes it would go from no storm, dead calm, then with winds building first at 30 mph, then 50 mph, then 60 to 100 mph or more. The rain came down like firehose rain and in the core of the storm, the lighting would strike once a second, within a quarter of a mile of my two-room mudhut with a galvanized tin room and this intense lighting would last for about 20 minutes. The total violence of the storm would last about an hour and twenty minutes. Now in the two years I lived there I never heard of tornadoes touching down but given the nature of the storm's structures you would have thought that it would be a regular occurrence. I heard of one time when 10 tornadoes struck on a single day. What I can tell you is that a region in the south of Swaziland was hit with hail the size of small loaves of bread about eight inches long, like large bricks, not round balls, which destroyed the same type of community centre/school I worked at, which had asbestos tiled roof. The building structure survive but the roof looked like it had been peppered with large, loaf sized bricks that blew holes in the roof. The roof was perforated with hundreds of holes. In the north, where I lived the storm tore off the galvanized tin roof of a 80' x 60' school building which flew about 200 ' through the air and land in front of my house. The galvanized roof of my house was pulled off. I survived hiding under my desk, playing Elton John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Me" on my boom box. The thunderstorms in Swaziland always scared the sh*t out of me. Sometimes we would have major flash floods after the storms, which were really dangerous because the scorpions and poisonous snakes would be flushed out of the ground. You didn't want to be outside in the rushing water, even in tall rubber boots. I was a quick way to get killed or swept away. William Finseth Gatineau, Quebec, Canada By the way we had four EF3 tornadoes hit our region last summer, which caused massive devastation in some parts of Ottawa - Gatineau and we had another one this year that missed us but would have been very destructive if it had hit any buildings.

@@bodombeastmode Zachary, I owe you and apology. I think your original statement is write that the United States has the greatest number of supercell thunderstorms in the world. I suspect that statement is correct. On the other hand I suspect that the whole western coast of the African continent from South Africa to Tanzania and some of the countries in the interior like Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zaire, Swaziland and Lesotho might give the U.S. a run for its money. The major difference is that storms build up about 300 to 400 kilometres from the coast with the Indian Ocean, usually beginning in the late morning and continue to build with the caps of the supercells reaching 60,000 feet plus, with the storms hitting with tremendous amounts of rain (12" in less than one hour), lightning strikes hitting at the rate of one per second within 1/2 km. for 20 minutes in the heart of the storm, high winds with average speeds of 100km/hr, much higher if a tornado touches down, the length of the storms last about one hour and twenty minutes. The big difference with these storms is they go out over the Indian Ocean where they do not cause trouble except for marine traffic, where conditions can go from moderate to terrifying in the space of a half-hour of the storm reaching the coast because it is not uncommon for wave heights reaching the coast can be as high as 10' to 12' so the thunderstorm hitting those waves can cause them to stack up. In the U.S. the line of supercells can travel all across the mid-western states and gradually move in the direction the central U.S. states and gradually move northeast, east and southeast pummeling all of states all the U.S. East Coast. The terror with the US supercells is that a line of storms can keeping rebuilding as the travel from the western states usually moving in a northwesterly direction, even traveling into Canada (Ontario and Quebec). All I can say is I have seen supercells that have been so monstrous that they have covered more than half of Swaziland at one time. It's not every day that a storm like that unloads millions of ice bricks as big as loaves of bread, with about six bricks per square metre, which completely destroy the roofs of large buildings, kill plenty of grazing cattle.

151K subscribers and only 105 likes? A lot of posers I think. Love the rain, wherever it may be and the lightning only heightens the love. Once watched a super cell passing as the lightning rained down everywhere. Took out a tree across the street but my classmates and I stood in that parking lot, fixated upon the sky like moths to a porch light. I see your focus upon the storms and it is mesmerizing! Thank you for your work in entertaining us that are stuck and unable to go see these wonders!

Supercells fascinate me,...even more than the tornados 🌪 they spawn. Their often Independence Day 'mothership' type structure, sometimes with an eerie green core, I find terrifying yet also mesmerisingly beautiful at the same time. I have observed only one actual rotating thunderstorm here in the UK, back when we had the remnants of hurricane Bertha. It was like somebody had pressed ffwd on the clouds 'remote' & it only lasted a few mins berore fizzing out but it was still pretty awesome to watch.

I lived in the end of tornado alley in Texas from 2006-2010. We had Ike hit us but in 2006 we had an unnamed cat 1 hurricane. This storm started off as a tropical depression, then to a tropical storm, then a severe group of thunderstorms, and then turned into a very weak very small Cat 1 hurricane in just 12 hours!! All that in a 12 hour time span! It hit overnight and came up through the Houston shipping channel so most everyone in the Galveston to Houston areas slept right through it. It made the record books. Little did we know that monster Ike would hit us just 2 years later.
