As a Texan we witness many tornadoes develop and demolish cities in the DFW area usually at a distance. You never really appreciate the sheer strength and destructive power until it hits your neighborhood! This year, 2019, in Abilene Texas my neighborhood took a direct hit from a tornado! It was the most terrifying experience of my life! It hit very early, right before daylight. Once the sun came up and I walked outside it looked like a bomb was dropped. I will never forget that sound..

Also, be mindful of tornado position. Sometimes, (quite often), they back build, so it’s important to see the whole structure as opposed to just a specific vortex (although a couple of those were just amazing). Thank you!

It’s so strange when some new tornadoes appear to be moving the air straight up the funnel cloud instead of rotating the air in a cyclonic fashion. Looks more like a vacuum cleaner!

Kevin Tucker It’s the upward motion of air in tornadoes that makes them so destructive. Most things in nature and man-made are better at withstanding straight-line winds, not forces that work against gravity.
