I have had the R5 for a little over a year now, but I've never had someone make me feel emotional about a camera and the photos it can create. Almost shed a tear over a tree today. Really. Thank you for this little adventure you've taken me on.

I have personally used Canon for the last 45 years , and Nikon professionally as a Crime scene investigator for 22 years. I have watched the development of they’re cameras and never considered changing. Last year during a snow storm I was carrying my 5D mk 4 on a tripod as I was walking around photographing the snow covered trees in a local park. The snow got so heavy that it built up and coated the back of my camera. At one point I had to chip it off so that I could move the rear control dial. No issues or long term detriment to the camera as a result. A testimony to the weather sealing of the Canon. I’m still using my Canon Dlsr’s but I’m looking to the R series for the future. Thanks for the review of the R5. Love the channel and your style of story telling.

Anyone who doubts the R5's durability should hear this. The first week I owned it, I was shooting low surf and my tripod was set just over what I thought was the incoming water's high mark. But, to my horror, a rogue wave knocked the tripod over! I immediately grabbed the partly-immersed camera, turned it off, pulled the battery and cards, and thoroughly wiped everything down. Then I raced back to the hotel (I was on vacation) after buying 10 lbs. of rice and a couple of containers. I took off the lens, wiped everything down again, blew off as much sand as I could, then capped camera and lens and gave them total immersion rice baths for 3 full days. Then, I prayed a lot. Amazingly, the R5 worked just fine after all that and still does 8 months later. What a testament to its weather sealing! The RF 24-105 F4L, however, acted very wonky and I sent it to Canon for repair. Thankfully, I'd paid for Canon's Carepak drop & spill protection on purchase. Canon sent me a refurbished replacement lens in 2 weeks and it works like new. R5 image quality is superb. Shadow recovery is much better than the 5D Mark IV. I find I need to use the calibration sliders in LR and ACR more than I used to, but the colors really pop. Basically, the R5 is the best camera I've ever owned and I look forward to the next decade shooting with it. PS: the R6 is the second-best camera, even at only 20 MP. It's my main video camera for KZread and my B cam for stills.

It's refreshing to see a review that's actually useful. So many reviews fixate on technical specs, which is kind of odd if you think about it as we can learn about that from a spec sheet - we don't need a review. So rarely do reviewers ever touch on ergonomics, in field use, durability, etc - the considerations that really matter and can't be learned from a spec sheet. Nice work! Always love your videos.

Totally agree! I'm looking around to see if I should by the R5, and so far it's been all technicalities in the reviews, specifications on the files etc. Seeing this in the snow - dripping wet, cold, and operated with big gloves - did more than the last three hours of reviews I've been watching.

Moved from a Canon 5D Mark 4 to an R5 just over six weeks ago and have no regrets whatsoever. Weight was a problem for me with the 5D Mark 4 as I am disabled and I am finding the R5 and the RF lenses so much lighter and easier to cope with.

Excellent video. I ordered the Nikon Z9 and expect to get it in a couple of weeks. What I love about the R5 is the articulating lcd screen. Very elegant looking and you can turn the screen to face the camera with the hard plastic facing out. A great way to protect your screen. You should show more of the articulating screen, how useful it is, and how practical it is. Fine job

Wow , cracking video and amazing photos Adam. That R5 is amazing, I dream on for that . I upgraded to the D90 this summer and with my range of sigma lenses I'm well happy. One day maybe I'll own the R5 . Thanks again for the inspirational video.

I can relate to how you feel about a place you’ve come to love returning to and finding it suddenly changed. I’m in Alaska and the changes of glacial ice in the course of even a year is phenomenal. I finally got the R5 last Nov and am simply blown away by it compared to my trusty 5D. I really enjoy your perspective.

Yeah. I think that was my favourite part. That 4K 120 is just lovely on that camera.

Beautiful images lovely seeing someone putting feeling in to the images, Do you do any Focus bracketing i took some landscape last year and was very under whelmed Probably because they were very blanned and didnt really tell a story, so i was going to up the anti this year, got me R5 RF 15-35 and try and use my imagination rather than just wide open spaces, thank you for sharing your photo adventures

Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the R5 Adam and the images were fantastic too. As a Canon shooter myself, the R5 provides at least the option of transitioning across from EF glass to RF if the longer term commitment is to stay with Canon which I admit is an attraction if I want to control costs a bit. The Fuji GFX 100s is equally attractive in respect to movement into Medium format although for a non professional like me, the costs of a such a transition is a barrier. Still have a niggle about the R5 as a lot of the spec is geared towards video so the outlay of over £4k and not seeing a need for video is the question I keep coming back to about whether to purchase or not. Your comments have given me food for thought though......thank you

If your not into Vid like me just ignore the vid functions, the R5 gives you many more Keepers and dynamic range is fantastic, just buy it, UK camera club ltd selling uk stock cheaper and free EF/RF adaptor.

Nice passionate review. Thank you. Your comment about boosting the default sharpness in Lightroom, do you also use the sharpness mask feature to sharpen only the InFocus areas? thanks very much

Thanks Adam, this video has certainly abated my fears of taking the R5 out in inclement weather! I’ve found the R5 to be a wonderful camera for multiple genres. It’s the first camera I’ve owned that checks most, if not all the boxes. Cheers.

What a delightful video this was, Adam, and the images - bloody stunning! I LOVE my R5, and it's been absolutely bulletproof. I used it for all my stills and slow-mo video clips, and the R6 for A-roll talking head stuff. Together, they're fabulous. That said, I would secretly love to get a GFX100S...

Thanks mate. The only real point of going up in resolution from the R5 is if you’re gonna be printing big. Although the GFX100 files do looks great on screen when you’re editing too.

Brilliant video as ever Adam, love your honesty, heart on sleeve approach. I couldn't agree more (yes I have one with 2/3 of the holy trinity. Couldn't part with my EF16-35 f4) Amazing how some compare it to a more focussed landscape camera such as the GFX. I did, but wanted an allrounder as I shoot all sorts. The AF is amazing with eye focus and now vehicle focus. The flip out screen and when shooting landscapes the focus peaking is really good for accurate manual focus. IBIS is also useful for when you don't want to or can't use a tripod. Absolutely loved the imaged BTW :-)

You mentioned that your'e not very good at reviewing cameras but what an excellent real world review you have put out. Yet another enjoyable video to watch, keep up the great work and thank you Adam.

I am sitting here in Corfu watching your video, it's 9c sun and cloud (after 7days of torrential rain) but that snow is making me feel soooo cold, lovely to watch but the sub conscious response to your video is weird. Some great shot's I have not seen any amount of snow here since 2006. Really enjoyed this video, thanks.

I like this video. It's not rushing through tech specs, but taking time for the moment and showing how the cam can help you to preserve memories. Anyway i want to know if there are any issues with that water on that cam, that is not told to be water resistant like the R3. For me it's a big thing to go out on days like these with a camera..

Great post as usual! I have a question... do you have some post in your channel on how you edit your photos...? (either LR, Capture One, and or PS), I love to see your approach... lots of photographers go crazy doing double (during editing not during taking the pics...), luminosity masks... round tripping from LR to PS...or using panels as Lumenzia or Panel Pro, etc, etc.... aslo: about printing... Why the f2.8 lenses Adam? Aren't the f4 ones good, and lighter for carrying into the field?

I've been using the R5 for about 6 months now as my hybrid landscape photography and video camera to complement my 5DSR, and it's such a stunning camera. Glad to see how it performs with the RF lenses too. I've only used the EF lenses and they all work perfectly. But the ability to do still images and videos so well is what really makes the R5 special. Even though I never use the 8k, the 4k 30/60/120fps, and crop/full uncropped modes, cover every possibility I can think of needing in addition to having image quality very close to the 5DSR. Great review! Love those snowy images. Stunning!

Great Video Adam, love to watch it as you convey the feeling of beeing there in the snowstorm! You sir, along with the other British successful landscape youtubers intrigues me a lot. You come into all this from an artistic viewpoint, adopting the technology to suit your needs. Overall I feel that you and your collegues have approached the mirrorless advances with a very balanced hesitant attitude, which is sound. Myself, I come from a technology viewpoint, I work within software/IT business and for me, my photography is a passion and hobby and has been so for the last 20 years. To me, the Canon R-system embodies the pinnacle of photography tech today, I have tried most of the systems out there as I'm such a tech nerd. The traditional camera giants, Nikon and Canon was pretty darn late to the mirrorless party. Myself, I gave up Digital SLR:s in 2014 and have been waiting for their autofocus to catch up, going through the m4/3 and Fujifilm APS-C systems and now when Sony and Canon seems to be the leaders in full frame, I believe Canon has the best balance between photography and the latest tech advances, in contrast AF, Ai face, animal and vehicle detection. Sony feels like just another smartphone/computer with a lens, while Canon feels like an actual camera, adopting tech to fit the purpose. Sorry for the waffling, I just wanted to thank you for your videos keeping me tethered to the artistic / creative part of photography, without it I would just drift of into algorithms, Ai and tecnology!

And yes, Love the Fujifilm GFX perfomance in raw image quality but they are a little bit too niche and pricey for my type of "allround" photography. AF performance isn't even close to the Sony / Canon performance, yet.

Hi Adam, I have seriously considered buying a medium format digital several times over the last few years, initially the gfx 50, and only last week, the gfx 100s, but as someone that likes pictures with great depth and close foregrounds, I feel that the reduced depth of field associated with a larger sensor too problematic. In the end I decided on another full frame camera. Great video, just the sort of nitty gritty review we need.

I just purchased the R5 last week. Love it. Not a video shooter yet but maybe later. Have the R6 and the sharpness is better for sure on the R5

Adam is there a reason you go with the F2.8 versions of the lenses vs F4?

The R5 is a great camera when 45 MP is a must for big screen video prsentations or large commercial posters and billboards, though the pricier medium format camers are preferred. For print images of snowing or snowy landscapes the high-resolution details, to me, are smushed and the high MP sensor has less value for these kind of expeditions. A common practice for me, like on my 1DX2 or incoming R3, will be to combine photo files into a panoramic, which will combine the increase of total pixles and less inhearent noise level produced by the R5 smaller senor elements.

It is a shame about the tree, I know them well and unfortunately they are in a very accessible and busy place frequented often by folks who dont appreciate the natural world like we do. With regard to the camera as a primarily landscape photographer I am leaning towards the GFX as an upgrade to the XT3 ( assuming a future XT5 doesnt throw another spanner in) but I am also hoping to start doing some event work so the R5 comes back into the picture as an all rounder. Decisions!!

indeed. regarding the tree I reckon it was probably just wind. it certainly wasn’t a clean break.

I stepped up from the 5D Mk IV too and it’s taken a good 6-9 months to get used to the camera and all it’s intricacies. I shoot wildlife and landscapes, with a little video. This camera is a brilliant all rounder. It does everything and with new firmware recently, I can nail moving birds and animals / subjects with the RF glass. Unreal images with cropping in post and work in PS. Super pleased I went with the R5, the R3 is good for sports and the R1 is to arrive as the flagship all rounder pro camera - god only knows what that will be like but it’ll beat the Nikon Z9 which is a fabulous camera now, and it’ll be comparable to the Sony Alpha 1. Great time to be around for new gear. But the cost is eye watering! 🥵

Agreed. In the videos Adam showed from earlier times, that tree looked a bit sickly. Maybe the landowner removed it for disease or infestation.

How come you don't use lens hoods? I use them more to keep rain off the front element than to keep sun off.

I rarely use a lens hood, but I think in those conditions I definitely would have broken them out. Lovely images!!

I have the canon R5 and love it for my wildlife photography and landscape.,but let me tell ya. The Canon R6 is my back up and I use that all the time for landscape and wildlife as well. Canon has done a great job with both of these cameras. Oh, And yes I print all my pictures with my Canon prograf 300. love the images! Great review!

Great images Adam, how come you didn't use a lens hood in those conditions. Not interested in video at all so would like manufacturers to offer non video version of the R5.

Beautiful snowy images. You sold me so, by extension, my wife will hate you! I am a life-long Canon user. About three years ago I wanted to move to full-frame. Instead of the 6D, I went to the RP so that I could have access to the lovely RF glass. The lenses are superb. The R5 is the next logical step for me, but down the road a bit when the prices come down.

Hi Adam, Interesting “real world review” and what a cracking location and weather . You think if some idiot is going to cut down a tree for what ever reason they would have the decency to do it at ground level !! . I made the move from the 5D4 two weeks ago. I loved my 5d4 but moving more into video than five years ago this seemed a natural progression for a hybrid shooter. However as a retired person with knees of jelly the flip out screen is a god-send compared to the 5d4. Going out today to give it a work out. Cheers Chris from NZ (very long time subscriber ) :)

Interesting take on the R5 Adam. personally I don't think the extra £1300 for the GFX100s plus the cost of the lenses (which are more limited) is worth it but can see the attraction esp. if you are not worried about wanting to do action/wildlife. I am waiting for the R5 grey price to drop a bit more then will definitely be tempted to get it as I am used to Canon and have 2 RF lenses now. I just hate how Canon (and others) overcharge UK customers compared to USA and other countries.

4:40 the rock behind you seemed to be a very good subject to make a photo, curious, did you shoot it?

Hi Adam! A quick question if I may? When you're shooting in conditions like that, how do you prevent the snowdrops from getting on your lens? Is it just a case of wiping the lens as often as possible or do you get rid of the drops in post? I only ask because I'm a bit of wuss and won't go out in rain or snow. I don't mind being cold, and I don't mind being wet.. it's when I'm cold AND wet I hate it! Having said that, being sat on a mobility scooter out in the snow isn't much fun, to be fair!

Hi Ash. I just wipe the lens. if it’s raining I focus manually, wipe the lens and hold the cloth over the lens, set the 2 sec timer and then pull the cloth away at the last moment. In this video, apart from the first image, the snow was falling away from the front lens element so it stayed relatively dry……..it was the screen I was having to wipe.

Good question. These are the only real conditions where I ever really need one. I lose them regularly and these were rental lenses so I left them safely behind where they were safe.

hi Adam , how do you liek the image quality on the 15-35, for me at 2.8 at 15 and 20 , i think that the corners seem to be a little stretched and the IQ seems not to be as goo sas my old EF 16-35 F4, what do you think , and also with which software are you working your images with ?

For me it was better than the 16-35mm F4. That's my usual wide angle and i dislike the vignette it creates. I didnt do any proper tests but my experience with the 15-35 was good and distortion looked acceptable to me.

Thanks Adam for the review. I agree the R5 is a good camera but I think the better option is the FUJI GFX100s for landscape photographers. I and one of the few people that own ar Canon 5DsR (50Ml MP) I have had it since 2016 and it never fails to do the job. WHy would I go backwards to get 45mp. The arguments for the mirrorless camera is relatively weak (WEIGHT), a very minor issue in the scheme of things. At 67yo I may end up using the 5DSR until the end unless someone wants to give me $9000 for the GFX100s .......LOL!!!!

Hi Adam, that tree looks like it's been cut rather than snapped don't you think? Sorry but I wouldn't recommend Lexar cards anymore. The brand name was sold to a Chinese company a few years ago. The quality is a bit glitchy today. I bought a Lexar Cfexpress when I first got my R5. It made the camera completely lock up.. I returned it and got a SanDisk. Never had an issue since.

So did the camera survive? its literally underwater I dont think a Sony A7 would survive that

Part of the reason I use Canon cameras is, they just work. All of the time.

While you may miss that tree, consider that the scene may actually be better (and certainly different) than before. Please don’t abandon that spot.

Lovely images, loving my R5 too. However, consistently over the many years, Lexar cards have failed the most for me! Looks like Canon might have a 100MP RF sensor coming out this year, but I can't see myself ever wanting to shoot more than 50MP. My NAS, HDD's and backups already costs more than my camera ;)

Out in the artic with the Royal Navy And I’m thinking photography would be incredible and yet the sun bearly rises so it’s dark blue and t And I forgot my tripod mount for the camera body and then the northern lights come out Ahhhh oh well home soon then back out for another 4months after Xmas

Awesome. I’ve spent some time with the Royal Navy over the years. Very impressive and decent people. Guess if you’re there in the spring you might end up with constant golden hour conditions. You also know to spend some Christmas money on a couple of extra mounting plates. I’ve been caught short many times before.

Beavers have started to be reintroduced in the UK. Much of argument against it is around the way they change the landscape, and not always in ways people want.

45mp isn't enough, my god, I think it's in the perfect ball park , and I'm not a canon shooter!!

Bought the R5 and the 100-500 for wildlife and birding last week, got the 15-35 today ugh where can I hide this stuff from the wife hahaha. Love your channel but my wallet hates you ROFL

Looks like that tree was cut down by someone such a shame. What possesses some people.

My theory is that was blown down and then the landowner/national park cut it away and removed it. It certainly wasn't a clean cut.

Bang average photographer but your videos are good...

That stupid rear LCD though. Having to reach across, pull out, twist and re-align every time you want a tilt option. Then you have to leave it sticking out like a sore thumb. It’s about time canon got their sh*# sorted and offer us a choice, not just this side hinged screen.

I must say I think the FujiFilm style screens are better for landscape photography. It’s a pretty video focused camera though so the side hinge is always gonna be the preference.

It looked more like someone cut the tree down.
