speaking of your book Adam, I am in the middle of reading your lovely book and am thoroughly enjoying it. your experiences as a police officer seem to have made you into a strong and determined individual with the drive and motivation to conquer most all the hardships that I could imagine encountering as a landscape photographer. I don't think that I personally would have handled your life experiences with the courage and drive that you have shown. This video was full of gorgeous scenes and I am glad that you choose not to avoid photographing more popular areas. I don't care how popular an area might be for photographing the light and the weather are never going to be duplicate from one visit to the next. It is the light and the weather and the skill of the photographer that determine the look and quality of the finished composition. I would never avoid a scene because it is photographed a lot. That is just an absurd philosophy regarding the taking of a composition unless lighting conditions were always the same at a given place and we know that that doesn't happen!!

Man, let me say one thing. I liked your videos and I follow you for awhile, but what you said today just gain another level of respect that you have no idea. I have been saying that for so long and the fact that you had the courage to say and even call it stupid(which by the way it is) and put out there that there is nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with photographing these well known spots. The level if pretentiousness and ego of these guys is something to be studied. And on top of that I’d rather hand my version, of a particular spot, on my wall that the one of the best landscape photographer out there. Those brats think like spoiled children, I got there first it’s mine. STUPID!!! That you for putting it out there.

Nicely made video Adam. I just purchased the R5 along with the 24-105 f/4. I think there are better dedicated landscape cameras on the market. I shot "what ever." That includes, pets, some people, birds but I do more landscape shooting. I do not do video. I think the R5 in my humble opinion is a "can do" camera with plenty of up grades. The down side is the few and very expensive RF glass that is available still in March of 2022. I have sold all of my Nikon gear and have moved to ML and Canon so I have no ED glass. I am looking at purchasing f/4 glass for now. I used f/2.8 glass in the past and they are terrific but so much more weight and 2Xs plus the cost of f/4. I am a serious hobbyist but I wanted a camera body that was an upgrade from my Nikon d810 and d4s. I have only had the R5 for 2 weeks and I am very happy with the enjoyment of using the camera but the end product is not as overwhelming from the images from my d810 or d4s.

Hi Adam I agree with your point on shooting popular locations. We can always find a new perspective of the Eiffel Tower, for example. But also, what is a popular locations? I don’t know the location you’re shooting in this video. I’ve seen your photos from this location but that’s the only reference I have. This location is new to me. Equally, my favourite place is Covão da Ametade in Portugal. It’s labelled as popular location but is unknown outside Portugal. I bet you never heard of it. You need to visit Serra da Estrela in Portugal. It’s like Lake District but it has good food and good wine ;)

Adam! I watched the pain of your drone trying to eat that tree. Trees always prevail. I crashed my first DJI A2 bout 10 mos back. Broke an arm off, dangling by some leads. (Yep, an evil tree reached out and snagged it from its path).. Returned it to DJI with a detailed explanation, admitting it was my error---They replaced it fully and shipped me a new drone. I did pay for the $75 insurance at purchase, and glad I did! Sorry that happened to you, especially, in light of providing content... Thanks for your videos. I look forward to whatever will be presented. :)

Adam, great pictures and as always enjoyable and educational to watch. I love that we can laugh at our disasters, its healthy and for me your description of what happened to the drone and subsequent rescue was a proper belly laugh , I just imagined myself doing the same thing and getting the same result. Re honeypot locations, as someone late in life to serious photography going to the popular spots just saves me time and also helps me to learn how to take good photographs as I can benchmark against others and understand how to get the best picture possible. I am having a little bet with myself which camera you choose......

I have been working my way up the Canon line since the 1970s... A few years ago, I wanted to move from my 70D to full frame. The 6D seemed the obvious choice, but the RP gave me similar specs and access to the lovely RF glass. I am in no rush, but the R5 is my likely next step, when the prices come down.

I actually really like high contrast stuff in landscapes and woodlands; deep shadows and blacks against brighter midtones and highlights. Not sure what it is about them but it probably depends on what sort of mood I'm in. It is especially difficult to process them though isn't it; I was trying to work on one I have from the Black Cuillin mountains in Skye with warm light hitting the foothills and the black jagged rocks looming over. Too easy to overdo it and offend the eyes with mad contrast and brightness! Loved the one with the wall near the beginning and the tree with it; don't really notice the bottom right hand side, my eyes were drawn to the wall through to the tree as the dominant part of the image, so the empty space in the bottom right just keeps the scene real - to me anyway! Nice session and video!

Definitely grouse, not pheasants. As for the 'honeypot' location thing, I don't get that either, but what I also don't get is people pretty much trying to get their tripod in the same spot, to get the same composition as one they've seen someone else take. Beautiful video Adam! I hope your drone is OK - the footage you did get from it was spectacular! As an Australian living in a semi-tropical climate this video made me yearn to live in the UK and experience conditions like these....just magical! And you've got some beautiful images from your day. I agree with your thoughts on the popular locations, and will always shoot what I'm drawn to whether popular or not. Possibly the only reason I can think of that someone might reasonably advise against shooting popular spots is if you're doing it just for the sake of it, not because it really speaks to you....although in saying that when I visited Hallstatt in Austria I had no inspiration to shoot the super popular shot of the village beside the lake, but did take a quick handheld shot on my way past after going for a lovely hike. The photo actually turned out really well and I like it more than I did at the time of shooting, so I'm glad I did stop for a couple of minutes at least. Really inspiring video!

When the Sony A1 was announced, I was thinking Medium format could be a better option at that price. My assumption is that diffraction is handled better with a larger sensor. That said, I still love the R5, but is shines when photographing moving subjects or there is an eye to lock onto. Oddly I feel the Canon R produces better landscapes, I cannot say why, it could be just I have taken more with the R. It could be diffraction at f11??

I wish I had more technical knowledge around sensors. With a battery grip I reckon the R5 would be the same kind of all rounder that the 5DIV was when it came out. In this price bracket(ish), for landscapes, that GFX100S is hard to beat.

@@Firstmanphotography The digital picture website claims, and I think correctly, that the more dense in pixels a sensor is the sooner that sensor will be impacted by the diffraction of the lens. That website has a chart of DLA or the f stop at which the diffraction is noticeable. As an example a 20mp full frame sensor may not have an issue with diffraction at f16, but a 45mp camera may with the same lens. Diffraction impacts crop sensors more. For example the 90D, may not be sharp past f5.6. Logically the best landscape sensors are going to be medium format, as long as the right lens exists. My expectation is that a 50mp medium format camera will beat a full frame 50mp camera at f16 and f22. Image stacking of multiple photos at f5.6 may end up being a possible solution, for a motion free photo.

@@Firstmanphotography The density of the sensor is one of the main factors in when diffraction sets in. There is something on top of these sensors called microlensing. These are extremely minute lenses that try to concentrate the light on to the ' sites ', the smaller the pixels, the smaller these micro lenses need to be. Small lens is more susceptible to diffraction. One more point while we are on the subject. These so called raw files produced by modern high density digital cameras are anything but raw in the proper sense. I won't go into details, but a proper raw file needs to be Linear. These files or to be more precise data stream from the sensor, are heavily worked on, molested, by the onboard computers to produce the images that we see on our screens. I hope that I am not offending anyone by saying that these devices we use, are not cameras in the classic sense. These are imaging computers and what we do is just a kind of CGI.

Love the shots mate, those conditions look amazing. I think I’d be blown away with that snow, that I’d probably forget to take a shot. What a great opportunity you have to try out different cameras. You’re right, they’re all great now days, we have plenty of options as landscape photographers. Thanks for sharing mate! 👍

Such a lovely video, Adam. Having shot videos now for a few months, I’m super aware of the effort that goes into them, and yours are always so beautifully done. As for the images, one really stood out - the forest image at 10:20. Wow!! 👍🦘🇦🇺

R5 is an excellent camera, still the sensor is 45 mp and not 50. Not that this make a huge difference.

Accuracy is not my forte when it comes to camera specs. Why couldn’t they squeeze in the extra 5?

Not sure exactly what is said about not shooting "Honey Pot" locations (never heard that term before) but you could go shoot at the same spot every day for ten years and you will never capture the same image twice. Photographs capture a single moment in time that is unique, and will never occur again. Interesting thoughts on the R5, I wonder though, how much does glass consider in your camera decisions? There's plenty of videos of professional photographers like yourself who weigh up the pros and cons of different camera choices, but at least from what I've seen not many raise the consideration of the glass choices that are determined by that camera choice. Does the range of glass in every format and the range of adapters render that consideration moot? Or is glass not as big a consideration these days as what the camera body offers?

10:13 is it just me or the first photo rellay has a little too busy foreground? I would probably blend the foreground with little more snow in post processing to make it a bit less busy looking. Its fascinating how often we find that a breathtaking scene doesn’t always produce the best photo.

I'm sure the R5 is a great camera but really is a poor value proposition for landscape photography, I priced up a Fujifilm gfx 50r with Gf lenses vs the R5 with RF lenses and the Fuji setup came out around 15% cheaper... Medium format fujifilm is a No brainer for someone who is serious about landscape photography and has the cash.

Everything is subjective in life and art of anykind. You like cliches and I do not. This comment is from an "old grumpy" photographer who does not like even his own photography of cliches.
