Kian J Canon should of left the high bit rates out and released them as a firmware. Then there wouldn’t be any overheating issues and the camera would of been compared to the proper a7r4, z7, s1r and it would of blown those cameras away, but since canon decided to market as an 8k camera now its getting negative reviews even though it doesn’t over heat on the same bit rates as it’s competitors, people are stuck on the overheating high bit rates even though its’ the only camera that offer it. It’s like Canon offfers the best high end photography camera currently on the market but it’s getting bash for the video specs that it’s straight competitors don’t offer, Canon damn if you do, damn if you don’t

What I don't get is that up until about 2 weeks ago, there was basically no such thing as 4K 60p (let alone 120P) on a full frame mirrorless camera. All the Sonys overheated in 4k at only 30 fps (A7III would overheat after about 20 mins according to Daniel Schiffer), and even the cropped Xt4 would overheat after about 14 mins in 4K 60p. Your only real option was the 1D Mark II/III or cinema cameras. Also, up until a couple weeks ago, these same KZreadrs were saying that they didn't like shooting 4K because of large file sizes, slow editing and encoding. We also heard complaints about the fact that the EOS-R had a cropped 4K and people wanted full width 4K. So now, the R5 comes out with 45 of the sharpest MP around (beating the A7RIV in Tony Northrups tests), some of the best lowlight of any camera for photography (again Tony said it was the best, better than the previous champ A7RIV), the best full frame IBIS, the best eye-AF, pushing 12 FPS, AND you can shoot 4K FULL FRAME 24/30p with no heat problems at all no matter how long you shoot. It's been proven you can't see a difference between 720p - 4K (check Matti Happooja's video on this) let alone between the normal 4K and HQ 4K when viewed normally (not zoomed in 300%) even on a 5k monitor (I've tried). BUT, in addition to all this, you have the option of 4K 120 (never before found on a mirrorless camera), the sharpest 4K ever on a mirrorless (HQ mode, shown better than the R6 or A7SIII), or 8K Raw.... internal... something no camera outside of a super expensive cinema camera can offer. Yet, for some reason, people are now saying that the camera may not be good for video because of record limitations due to heat in these specialty modes that nobody had up until 2 weeks ago... and are comparing this camera to a crippled 12 MP, video-centric camera... that doesn't even shoot 8K or any internal raw at all. Weird.

I used to hear people complain that Canon artificially limited it's camera video. They finally listen, and everyone complains they overheat. It's a camera with video capabilities that have some competition for the other cameras in it's league. It is not a RED video camera, it's a replacement for the 5D series DSLR camera. Everybody knew that heat was going to be an issue, we have been hearing that since the day the video capabilities were first discussed. I really was hoping for a video talking about how it worked as a camera, you normally talk about how the camera photo resolution is. And when I finally get your review it's "great", and everyone will be pleased, but it overheats! I need to know if it's going to be soft in details like other Canon mirrorless cameras!

Got my R5 today. I’m mostly a photographer who does documentary video work. I shot 4k24 HD and 4k24 and there really wasn’t enough of a difference to justify leaving it in HD mode. With that, there are no record limits. If I do slow mo, it’s mostly 30-60 second clips that will expand in the final video. I shot for four hours on a single battery (off/on photo and video) and never got an overheat warning and ended up with beautiful footage. The photos are out of this world. Low light is crazy good. It’ll be a few days before I can try some astrophotography shots, but I’m super excited about that, too. I’m very pleased with my purchase.

As a photographer who only rarely does video, this camera seems really harmed by being marketed primarily for that 8k feature. I mean it’s pretty much a compact 1dxiii with virtually all the speed and twice the resolution - (exciting that no reviewers are grumbling about its lowlight performance for all those pixels). And while it’s expensive for a 5D series it’s cheaper than a 1dxiii too.

I'm going to preface this by saying that I'm a multi-system shooter (Canon, Sony, m43). I received my R5 a couple days ago, and have an A7SIII preordered for use as a dedicated video body. I think that if your main use is video then the A7SIII is the best purely video-optimized tool out there, surpassing even the Panasonics in that respect. IMO 8K doesn't really add much value for most people shopping for hybrid bodies (real 8K workflows seem to involve Red Ranger 8KVVs and the like). With that said I love the total package of features in the R5, and believe that the video tools are enough for my uses, though I use a Ninja V most of the time anyway, which may skew my assessment of the 4KHQ mode a bit. Even when I record internally I use the Ninja as a monitor for focus/waveforms/etc. One thing that I don't think gets mentioned enough: The R5 also has 1.6x cropped 4K24/30/60 modes that are oversampled from 5.1K (basically the EOS R's crop, but with oversampling and 60 fps). The IQ is slightly worse than the 4KHQ mode but a lot better than the line-skipped ones. I expect that it's equivalent to the R6's 5.1K oversampled modes, modulo the crop of course. I took my R5 outside in bright sunlight in 38C weather the other day, attached my trusty Sigma 18-35/1.8, and shot cropped/oversampled 4K30 with internal recording for over an hour (stopping/restarting at 29:59, of course). No problem. Canon's specifications also say that that mode does not overheat. In that respect it's a lot like the A7R[234] - you can either have a limited 4K FF mode, or a really good oversampled crop mode.

This is great stuff! Serious food for thought here. I'm an old, archaic guy (60), and I've been happily in the DLSR camp for years. I've still got my original 300D, which I've had for 20 years, and is too much of an old friend to get rid of. Over the years, I've added a 20D, a 7D Mk II, and finally a 1DX Mk III. I'd never really worried about moving to mirrorless, even if DSLRs are officially "obsolete" now. However, I find that I've been giving some thought to picking up an R5. With the exception of a soon-to-come Sigma 100-600C, and a Tokina 19-35 that I've had for years, all of my lenses are Canon EF or EF-S, so the ability to use an EF-RF adapter is a powerful incentive. I don't shoot video at all, only stills, so the overheating issues I've read about really wouldn't apply. I don't know, it's kind of a coin flip. I could add a used 5D Mk IV to my bag, but that would be redundant with the 1DX, even if the former has slightly higher resolution in terms of MPs. Christmas is coming…

I've run out of battery every single time I've taken it out for a day of shooting, but I can't easily quantify it. Excellent video. I got my R5 yesterday and I experienced similar results. Being mainly a photographer this camera is amazing. I hope that some firmware will solve overheating since the camera never feels hot when the warning appears. But maybe it will be a recall if the thermo-sensor is the culprit here

that's part of the problem. the camera seals the heat inside, hence why takes 2 hours to "cool down" back to get the same recording times as a fresh cold one. Sony uses the body/shell as a heatsink, so even on modes where it can potentially overheat (like on top of a black plastic trampoline at 30+C ), the camera was ready to film another 30min after 2-3 min cooling down by a fan.

@@johnsysays It has not for those video settings. Anything 4K 30 FPS or less does not overheat but anything above that does albeit a bit longer recording before it overheats. 1080P even at 120 FPS does not overheat. And the best finding of all is how to get rid of the false overheat when doing photography. For some reason, if you memorize an overheating mode on the video C3 setting, then you will get false warnings of overheating even if all you are doing is taking photos. That was the part that annoyed me the most as I am not much of a video person. I plan to use it this year in 4K 30 FPS and see how it goes. The other good new is that if you are more of a video than photo then the R5C is the camera for you as that one does not ever overheat and they kept the price extremely reasonable. Hope this helps answer your question

The normal 4k (non-overheating) quality is actually pretty great...miles ahead of any previous Canon DSLR/mirrorless footage. The chart example vs the "HQ" mode must've been at 200%? Very few could notice the difference without a zoomed in side by side. I'm also surprised there was no mention of the 5.1k oversampled 4k you get in crop mode (at 24p, again no overheating). You guys are pretty great most of the time, but this review seems guilty of the youtuber trend of "let's put this into the mode that overheats THEN say it can't be used for serious video work." It's nonsense. I'm glad Canon gave us these modes with limitation instead of not at all.

speaking of stills this is a great camera, but it's packed maybe of video features which increase the price compared to a competition where the Z7, S1R and even A7 RIV cost 1000€ less (not considering A7 iii with similar resolution at 2000€ discount). That's the real problem. It was better to create a specific video camera for video like the A7Siii with a better body for heat dissipation and heavy video use, every brand do it now (like Panasonic with S1H for example) so you can have a great still camera balanced in price compared to the competition., for photographers only. R5 is a great still camera but way too expensive compared to direct competition (stills) and not so suitable for heavy video use compared to the competition (ok, it's 8K, but you have to look at operability and result, not just specs, where A7s III is the example).

Having over an hour of time with an atamos definitely makes the camera useful to pro film making. The rig won’t be as ultimately small as some might want, but it will still be smaller and cheaper than a c500 cinema camera. You can never have everything you want. The R5 has high mp for limited internal 8k, high frame rate 4K, and phenomenal photos, and the a7siii has phenomenal 4K capabilities, but exceedingly limited photography purposes. You have to take the good with the bad. Nothing is yet perfect.

No dual-mic input... Ok, well, they have these brand-new just invented wireless mics that have two transmitters and a receiver that allows two mics to connect to a single mic input through the receiver... Boom - two people recorded on a single mic input. Jordan didn't mention that along with the standard 4k (non-oversampled) video you have available, to avoid overheating, the APS-C crop-mode and although you introduce a 1.6x crop (less than the EOS R) it does give you oversampled 4k from 5.1K video for more of that HQ look. Thanks for talking about rolling-shutter. Some other reviewers I think assumed the R5 would have it because other Canon sensors do and stated the R5 "has plenty of it!" Thanks for the video. Appreciate all the insights! I do hope Canon improves on the things through firmware like the Log formats, 29:59 limit, overheating controls (I think some of the issue is how conservative they are), heat management when externally recording, FHD 120p, and some lower bandwidth codecs if you want to balance recording space and quality a little more.

With all that being said I think im happy with my Z7, I don't shoot video or sports so for a lot less money the files are probably pretty comparable if not a touch better on the Z7 but on the whole not noticeable. Wish Nikon would bring out some more lenses though that is starting to annoy me a touch.

For those who are not into video stuff, I think Nikon Z series are probably the best choice. Great ergonomics and build quality, great lenses, amazing files. I only wish the investment for switching from DSLR to ML wasn't so heavy. By now I stay with my D700/750 combo, they still give me beautiful images.

Coming from D850 & the Z7/Z6 myself.. the R5 blows the Z7 out of the water.. the AF is super fast and always accurate (unlike my Z7 shots 50% out if focus in any moving subject kinda shoot such as portraits etc..) the z7 has better dynamic range but that’s about it.. i was tired of waiting for exciting lenses or even a any pro lens longer than 85mm (specially 70-200). IBIS is much much better on R5 and just the handling/grip is much more comfy. Overall the R5 is a superior camera and worth every penny unlike the Z7 release price of $3400.. the Z7 is worth $2500 max. Still got great shots with Nikon and will always remember my D850 but it’s time to move on for better system

Moe Alyasini I shoot purely landscapes, I’ve played with the Canon raw files. They don’t blow me away. Similar to Nikon if anything a bit less dynamic range and sharpness when zoomed right in maybe the AA filter not sure. It’s fine for me I have it already it works. Don’t get stuck on the endless cycle of GAS all the other systems will catch up and exceed Canon then Canon will do the same again. Always has been always will be the case. Stay calm.

tallaganda83 a landscape photographer is the least interested in features such as Reliable Auto focus or IBIS! when 50% of your photos are out of focus what good is dynamic range?? Do I miss the dynamic range sometimes ? Sure but not with R5 cuz it’s got comparable dynamic range (tip: go watch the newest comparison Toni did with sony a7r4 etc.. you will see it’s actually on par. So that gap you are talking about is gone and i am not sure what raw files you tried !?) I was a Nikon shooter for many years.. dont you think i would have stayed with Nikon and kept 10s of thousands of dollars in gear and lenses ? I bought the Eos R For fun and realized that even that mediocre camera had better AF than Nikon’s “pro” z7 so I made the decision knowing that they’re going to come up with a pro body just like the R5 now. Let’s not be fan boys and give credit when it’s due man! I am a paid portrait and fashion photographer and I cant afford having issues with my Af or not have a pro glass collection “70-200 f2.8” etc.. Nikon is behind just like Sony felt behind when the R5 came out so they came out with a great “video only” camera and soon you will see the release of the a7 mark4 to keep people from moving to canon

Moe Alyasini Are you serious? The autofocus isn’t that bad holy crap😂 I focus stack in camera anyway so I’m definitely not missing focus. Half the time I just manual focus using peaking or focus assist anyway. The ibis is fine on the Z7 too. There is not a noticeable difference. Obviously you love your new toy but just go and shoot the bloody thing and get off KZread.

Few questions please: 1. Where can I find the video stills comparison as shown in this video? Are the video stills zoomed in at 100% or 200%? 2. Is the 4k24 SQ that bad? Tony Northrup said it was garbage and Jordan said it was bad. However Armando Ferreira seemed ok with it. Of course 4k24 SQ is worse than 4k24 HQ but how is it compared to other cameras’ 4k24 SQ (or non oversampled 4k)? 3. How’s the battery life?

Canon has put out a wonderful high-resolution small camera with excellent weather sealing and no internal fan. Obviously, they had the needs and preferences of the professional still photographer foremost in mind, at the expense of the professional videographer. With this trade-off in mind, it appears they've released a state-of-the-art still camera with a nod the videographic community. Why professional videographer's are so irritated with RF5/RF6 release, mystifies me. The R5/R6 isn't the camera for them. I can live with that.

8K in R5 is a step forward for mirrorless hybrid. You can get it and work around its limitations to produce a great image. Or you can get a7s3 which still won't have 8K and not nearly as good a photo camera as r5. If you need FF 8K internal RAW and can't invest in a RED or bigger cameras, R5 is a killer deal honestly. Just learn to work around its limitations and stop cribbing. You are not going to record interviews and review vlogs on 8K.

@@bosstowndynamics5488 R5 is an extremely positive step in FF hybrid segment and it will find its users. At this time, budget filmmakers have moved on to Blackmagic or Canon c300s or sony f7 etc. This is the first camera that can give them a serious competition and not just a B Cam. Even if its recording 10 minutes of 8K in a go.

@@DavCro exactly my point is. If you are shooting more than few minutes of 8K RAW internally, you are doing something wrong. This is a niche feature mostly for cinema purposes. And if the 8K quality on R5 is good enough, this is going to be a killer.

@@bosstowndynamics5488 big productions don't shoot on R5 and A7 and S1... Thry have cinema cameras. Most Small productions now rent 2nd tier cinema cameras such as c300 or F7 or Red. This camera does not overheats in normal 4K unless you are shooting 120 fps or hq. At that rate any small camera will overheat including the a7s3 which is reportedly getting overheated faster than R5! We have a7s2 at our facility and it overheats outdoors as well and limited color depth on files. We work around it. The problem with R5 is that it offers so much right now that its user base isn't defined. Who this camera is for? I guess with time it will find its base and work seamlessly. But at this price point, in a small hybrid body, any camera will overheat at certain bit rate. Its not so much an issue as it is the nature of the small hybrid mirrorless body.

Last fall I sold my huge Nikon kit, D5 and 9 prime fast lenses and 3 speedlights and one zoom: 200-500, all of it, gone on eBay in a few weeks. I bought a Sony A7R4, 24 mm f/1.4 GM, 85 f/1.4 GM + 135 f/1.8 GM. Profoto A1X flash, love, RRS plate for camera, etc. etc. Now I can pretty much carry the whole kit and kaboodle, where with Nikon, much of the kit stayed at home. Now, I loved my D5. But when I bought that camera, I did have my finger in the wind, and I looked at Sony, not really knowing the acronyms on various bits of glass, and I don't think any GM lenses at that point, and not my go-to primes. So I bought the D5. (Prior cameras: D200, D700, Df) Last fall when the A7R4 was announced, I followed the industry, and decided I could not hold onto my Nikon gear much longer. Sony now had the glass I wanted. Canon, same deal. Canon, you don't have the glass. The only glass I see is that RF 85 f/1.2. Give me RF 24 f/1.2 Give me RF 135 f/1.2 and I will sell my teeth to move to Canon. I have zero interest in zoom lenses. I'm a prime shooter.

I think what's happening is that the plastic case of the camera acts like a blanket, keeping all that 8K processing waste heat inside the camera, which is why the cooldown times are so long. In contrast, the Fuji X-T4 can overheat in its highest spec video modes-but it also cools right down again and is totally usable in 10 minutes, because it's got all those metal surfaces to sink the heat to the outside. I've never been able to get my X-H1 to overheat.

I have an R5 and if you record 8k or 4k hq non stop, the back will get a little warm, but not too much. Then that goes away quickly, but you get a overheat warning and the camera will be cold to the touch. Basically, in an hour window, you can record around 35min of video until it needs hours to fully reset.
