As a Nikon D810 shooter making the switch to mirrorless I considered the Z7 II, but was severely underwhelmed by their capabilities. After exhaustive research, I've decided that the R5 is lightyears ahead of pretty much anything out there and will serve me for a long time. I'll still keep the D810 and all the glass I've invested in as my backup. So, the R5 is now on order. Your setup tutorial is exactly what I have been looking for. I've never picked up a Canon before, and learning a new system from square 1 can be a daunting task, but this will serve as a great reference because I don't plan on doing much video. I feel this will give me a leg up to get out and shooting sooner rather than later. Thanks for a great tutorial.

Glad it helped! There have been a few significant updates to the firmware since I made this, but it should still hold up. If you want to save a tone of HD space the new IPB compressed format works really well and as long as you aren't trying to push the dynamic range too hard, you should get great results.

Straight too business, thank you!. Don’t forget that the camera also out of the box has the eye detect set to auto, so to leverage that joystick enable move, you need to set eye af to a focus point,

Very helpful video, Gary! I have watched about 20 videos on the R5 and your's is one of the very best on how to set up the camera. I didn't realize that a person could shoot in less than 45mg per shot. If I get the camera, I would not need hi res for most shots. But for serious landscape photos...where I might make a 30x60" metal print, that would look nice!

Hey Gary, is there a setting where when you review photos that are taken portrait style (vertical) and you turn your camera the image turns automatically based on the direction the camera is turned?

Not that I’m aware of, but you can set it to display vertical images vertically to take up the whole screen. As far as I can tell, it doesn’t flip the orientation like a phone does. That would be a cool feature to have as an option. I’ll look into it more

1.6 crop use case. Instead of buying 1.4 or 2.0 extender you can crop in for getting extra length out of your lenses. This helps for everything from Sports to birding to landscape

Quick question about antiflicker. Have you done any burst shooting while using the antiflicker? Where I shoot (high school sports) I need to have antiflicker turned on most the time too but the R5 documentation says that shooting can get down to 4.9fps with antiflicker enabled. Have you noticed any significant drop in fps? (if you've done any burst shooting with antiflicker enabled)

Unfortunately I don’t really do any burst shooting as I am mainly doing portraits in the studio. Might require you do a bit more YT research and maybe find a sports specialist who has put the camera through its paces. Wish I could be more helpful with that, it’s just not my area :) thanks for watching!

Yes I do! If you have an IS lens attached, there is no menu item. It is controlled completely by the switch on the lens. If you remove the lens or attach a non-is lens you will see it there :)

@@ronenpg if you have both IBIS and IS in the lens, they work together automatically, it's just controlled by the lens.If your lens doesn't have IS the control switches to the menu and you have IBIS only

Hi Gary, is there the option to change to back-button-focusing as they have on other cameras like my old 7D mk1 ?

Oh yes! I use it and prefer it over the shutter focus in most cases. It seems to be witched on by default in the R5, but you can turn focusing off on the shutter so only the back button focuses (unless in Auto AF tracking and Servo etc.)

Hey Gary. Great video. I just wanted to correct one tiny thing. When you were talking about the 1.6 cropping ratio you commented that you still have 18 mega pixels on the R5. In fact, if you do the numbers it leaves you with just over 28 megapixels, which is pretty unbelievable.

Okay great, I will double check that info. Most of that kind of technical stuff I get straight from the manual which says, “Approx. 17.3 megapixels...” but it’s worth double checking. Thanks for watching!

I just got my R5 and the "IS (Image stabilizer)" is not in the list of page 7 as shown in your presentation or anywhere else in the menu. Did you do some thing to make it appear in the menu or was it there when you got the camera? Thank you.

If you have a lens with IS attached to the camera it doesn’t appear in the menu. The IS is controlled by the switch on the lens. If you attach a non-IS lens you will see the option appear in the menu :)

@@GaryHughesOfficial I thought I saw, on the internet, an indication when both on it's an hand sign with a +.. But anyway, I did attach an lens without IS and the option did not appear in the menu. I still think canon meant to let you choose if you want the IBIS off even with IS lens. What happens when you switch of the IS mode in the camera but on the lens it's still on?

I don’t seem to have the “IS (image stabilizer) mode” option on my R5. Does it depend on the version?

If you have an image stabilized lens on the camera, that option will not appear. When an IS lens is connected the stabilization is managed completely from the button on the lens.

I definitely find that that Canon in general leans red/yellow, at least in stills. Shoot a color target and white balance on that in your post production software. If you use LR, a good camera profile is a huge help, the profiles in LR are pretty bad. Calibrite color checker Passport has software that helps you create custom profiles that look great. In Capture 1 the R5 Pro Standard profile set to Film Standard looks great. Good luck!

if you use Anti-flicker in the studio that means that u not controlling your light and that's the whole point of studio lighting I will recommend starting with a black photo then light it with the studio light

That’s possible, but not entirely accurate. Much of my work takes me into offices and boardrooms in mixed lighting situations where it comes in handy. Leaving on anti-flicker makes certain I won’t forget to switch it on when I go on location as well.

Is r5 able to trigger canon speedlight wirelessly without attaching to any external transmitter?

Thanks, Gary! I too have my R5. I found out the hard way that my strobes won't high speed sync with the R5. Yet. Firmware pending I suppose. Wondering if you've had any compatibility issues with the R5 with any of your existing equipment.

@@jaxphotobuff9252 Westcott FJ400's. I did test my Godox AD200pro last night and HSS is a go! As Gary said new camera problems. For HSS just need to wait for Westcott to come out with firmware for the fix. Best of luck!

@@jaxphotobuff9252 I am not sure if this is helpful or relevant to you, but I was able to use my R5 with my Profoto A1 without any issue that I could tell. I was very happy with the results of my test photos.

My understanding is that when shooting in RAW or CRAW, the Picture Style has no effect on the image - it only effects what you see on camera in the screen and VF during playback. Setting it to Neutral or Standard does not apply any settings to the image, but it gives you a better idea of what you'll see in your editing software.

Absolutely right. Nothing really matters in RAW, just what you see on the playback. For some reason, I have never been able to get my head around shooting RAW that way though. I still need to see it as close as possible to the finished product in-camera. Helps me with the creative process even though I can play with whatever afterward. Thanks for watching!

Gary, how are you dealing with the low dynamic range with shooting video in manual mode? Have you started playing with Auto lighting optimizer or Highlight tone priority?

Funny you should ask as I am putting together my R5 video settings. The biggest problem I can see with the DR is that the R5 clips the highlights pretty easily. I am mitigating that by using a light meter to make sure I don’t overexpose anything and shooting in All-I and C-LOG so as to get the most flexibility. Video is very new to me (as you can probably tell) so I am slow to make any content related to it just yet

Can you disable the screen by default so that it only comes on when you want to review pictures/ use the menu etc? I shoot a lot in low light and the display would be very distracting. I know I can flip it around but I want to use the touch and drag feature so that's out of the question.

Yes you can disable review on the screen so it doesn't come on unless you press a button to do so. It's not a new feature to Canon so I didn't go over it. It can be very useful under certain circumstances, for sure. Thanks for watching?

@@GaryHughesOfficial So it can be made to behave just like a DSLR in that the live view on the screen also does not come on even when the eye is not at the EVF? Is the EVF always on then or does it only come on when you look into it? When I tried out an EOS R in a Canon workshop last year the instructor was not able to tell me how or even whether it could be set up this way, so I'm a little bit confused there.

this is currently not possible on any rf camera. another reviewer mentioned this was his only gripe.

Can you program any of the buttons to allow you to switch quickly from Human to Animal eye autofocus?

@@lang5264 It's tough to wait, but let me tell you: It's a pain in the butt to have it so soon that none of the software I normally use can process the files. By the time you have one Adobe will support the RAWs

I just purchased my R5 ... but I do not have all of the options on my menu as you do. In CAMERA mode ... you show 8 options, I only have 4. Also, the last two menu option don't even show. Do I need an software or firmware update? Help!

I am not quite sure what's happening, but it might have to do with the mode your camera is in. Are you in P, Av, Tv, M? Those might change what's available.

Is the lens you have connected IS? If so it is completely controlled by the hard switch on the outside of the lens. COnnect a non-IS lens and it will be there.

That information is typically displayed on the screen on top of the R5. I think it shows the remaining number of images to shoot by default.

BTW: Colorspace and picture style, or NR/Sharpness/Clarity don't change ANYTHING if you are shooting RAW

That’s a good point, but only partially true. For example, picture style can be applied to RAW files but you can change it in post. It also affects how images are rendered for viewing on the cameras screens. I appreciate you watching, thanks for the feedback.

Question. My "7" settings doesn't have the option to turn IS mode on or off, all the other ones look like yours but I'm so confused as to why I dont have the is option. Thoughts?

Well that’s a new one in me. Since it’s a newer camera, I will have to look into this and see what I can dig up. My guess is that there is another setting disabling it or it’s in a mode that doesn’t allow IS. What mode is the camera in?

On some lenses, the IS is switched on and off via the IS switch on the lens rather than via the menu on the EOS R5. The camera automatically combines the In Body Stabilisation with the Lens IS.

So here's the answer I got from Canon: The IS only shows up in the menu when a non-IS lens is connected. Otherwise it is controlled by the switch on the lens. In the case of this video, I had no lens attached so it was in the menu. There is no way currently to separate the lens IS and the IBIS when an IS lens is attached. Hope that helps!

Where can we put in our complaints to canon? I love the R5 and R6, but i want the mf-n button on the R6 to be able to cycle C modes.....thats all!

What I really did was concentrate on the things that I feel are unique the R5 than other Canon cameras rather than every item on the menu line by line. If you have a question about any particular function and I can help, I will :)

@@omenworks It's controlled by the switch on the lens. Almost too simple, right? Connect an EF lens with the adapter and you will see where it pops up in the menu.
