How I Set up the Canon R5 for Video - Do You Really Need 4K?

I will be the first person to admit that I am not a video expert, but after spending the last couple of months with the EOS R5 and learning everything I can from experts and hands-on use, I have ended up with a pretty good understanding of how to simplify some of the important points about using this camera for video.

    The reason the regular 4K looks better in crop mode is that it's oversampling from 5.1K down to 4K. If you do some tests you'll see that it actually comes really close to the 4K HQ (in fact if you add a tiny bit of sharpening in post I bet you couldn't spot the difference). The advantage being that now you have no overheating warnings since this mode isn't limited by heat like HQ is. If you get used to using this crop factor, you'll find you can shoot all day long and never have to worry about heat and at the same time not sacrifice image quality.

You totally surprised me when you said you were shooting on the RP cause it looks so clean. Was that 4K or 1080p? Based on what you said about talking head videos, I‘m guessing it was 1080p and if so, I’d saw its totally fine for YT and you proved your point! Would love to know for sure though! Cool quick descriptions. One detail you missed which would be helpful to mention if you can punch it in is that your default video settings in photo and regular video modes are pegged to however you set Custom 3. That was driving me nuts, but there it is. C3 is the global "template", and you can modify settings from there in other modes but it will bounce back to your C3 settings of you power off until you modify those, either registering new ones or modifying directly if you enabled auto-update in Custom Modes.

    Hey, informative video great 👍, did you get overheating issues during 4K 60 and 120fps? How long can it shoot. Also does the 4K hq and normal 4K have major differences ?

  • @GaryHughesOfficial

    @GaryHughesOfficial

    2 жыл бұрын

    To be honest, I have switched to shooting in 4K IPB light since they added it in the year since I made this video. No overheating issues as of yet. I only shoot short B-Roll clips in 60 so no overheating the way I use it. As far as HQ, I don’t have need for it as I mostly shoot talking head KZread videos and the difference is pretty slight after YT gets done compressing it. A majority of people watch YT videos on their phones, which makes the ultra high resolution largely irrelevant unless you are cropping a bunch. Best bet with the R5 is to ask yourself how your shoot video. The answer to overheating is to use an external recorder which, in my experience, most serious video shooters do anyway. If you plan to use the R5 for a lot of serious video shooting with long record times, an external recorder/monitor is the way to go. If you are making causal YT videos, you shouldn’t see any problems overheating.
