    Nice review. I really like the ability to crop with the R7. And the focus stacking is awesome! BTW, lots of bees in your parts!

    Thanks! Yeah we get lucky here and the garden really brings in a lot of different bee species. The focus stacking is amazing to have built in now! Saves so much time and actually gives nice results. Thanks for always watching!

    NIce! I am going into the R7 myself. Sensor size and depth of focus is complicated, but the sensor size in itself does not change depth of focus. But you will get a greater depth of focus effect from a crop sensor IF you compose for the same scene that was given by a full frame. That is, if you use a shorter focal length (wider angle) lens to give the same scene as the full frame, then there is a slightly greater dof. Also if you use the same focal length, but merely pull back a bit to get a wider angle, that too gives slightly greater dof.

    Really useful video for me. I'm mostly shooting macro and have the Canon R8. I think I might have done better to get the R7, for the reasons you describe.

    All the stuff I talked about is true but don’t let that bother you if you got the R8. It’s more than capable of great macro shots. This stuff is only worth thinking about when comparing cameras. Your R8 will get the job done just fine. It’s about knowing what you have and how to use it to your advantage. Your R8 will do much better at high iso and you’ll be better adapted for natural light macro shots as well. No need to worry at all you made a good choice.

    Great review, thank you (Justin - if I got your name right?). Credit to your girlfriend for such a beautiful garden. The Godox flash looks great. Since the flash does not work for focus stacking or high fps, Manfrotto constant lights could work, perhaps attached to a tripod on one or more sides, or one on top of the camera and one on a tripod off to one side. I should be getting the R7 and the RF 100mm macro tomorrow, and this video is really inspiring and helpful to get me started. Thanks again. David Clode, Cairns, Australia. Sept. 21 2022.

    I am not a fan of the 'look' from the twin macro flashes when adjusted right and left but would like to see more with one placed on top and possibly with larger diffusers than those tiny things supplied by the manufacturer. I'm currently using a homemade diffuser on a standard single flash which get redesigned every time I go out. What I would really like is a flash that could keep up with a small number of manually focus stacked shots allowing you to lean toward the subject as it records 4-6 images at high frame rate but not focusing between shots. My old flash is only good for two shots fast enough for this and the R7 at 15fps mechanical is quite capable of manual stacking. I also would enjoy seeing your opinions on the differences between using a few input images shot at f/8 compared to more and more closely spaced images at a wider aperture. Finally, I am torn between my old Canon EF 100mm macro and my recently purchased 85mm Laowa 2:1 macro. The Laowa is sharper but manual focus only and loses the colored focus peaking when stopped down beyond f/11. Your videos are well done but bring up as many new questions as they answer. That, actually, is a complement.

    I always think about getting a laowa macro lens. I seriously love my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L and I’m always thinking about getting the RF version as well. How do you like your laowa lens? I’ll definitely be making some focus stacking videos and I’ll try some of the F/8 brackets vs other apertures and spacings to see how the results are for sure. I do think my new flash gives off a more flat harsh light then using the cage and the godox tt685c off camera like I use to but I attach an arm and then the flash and it gets so heavy on the arms after a while I like the ease of use of the new system so perhaps a modified diffuser will solve the issue like you suggest I’ll have to look into it what I can do for that. Really glad to have you watching the videos and chatting with me this is what I hope for out of the channel getting like minded photographers helping each other out thank you so much man!

    You can’t use focus bracketing/stacking with Laowa of course as no AF but you could use high speed fps and move forward using natural light f4

  • @dougsmit1

    @dougsmit1

    Жыл бұрын

    @@jesoby That is not quite true. While you can not expose a focus bracket series using the manual focus lens like the Laowa, you can expose a sequential series manually moving the camera closer to the subject each time using a macro rail. I have two variations on these. One is a bit coarse and works when you want to advance a few mm at a time; the other has a fine thread and easily advances evenly by as little as 1/4 mm. That one is used when doing a series where there is great magnification and no depth of field. DPP4 stacks either type. The auto focus bracketing of Canon works by changing the focus setting which has limits in macro closer than the minimum focus distance (1:1 in the case of most auto focus macro lenses) when you add extension tubes. Obviously moving closer to the subject does not work with landscapes so a manual focus series including very distant things has to be done by turning the focus ring which is harder to do evenly.

    Nice to see a review of a couple of Canon R Series cameras looking at their use as cameras for macro. (There are a million reviews by birders.) But many issues are different between the two types of shooting, and you point them out, at least as far as handheld macro goes. Macro photographers shooting handheld care less about the placement of buttons and wheels (I think) and are much more concerned with depth of field, resolution, and flash. It's too bad that flash is not available in electronic shutter mode (although I can understand why). But can it work in electronic shutter mode when not in a burst mode? If it could, that would be useful for me shooting extreme macro on a tripod and rail, with the camera tethered to my computer. In that scenario, my shots are not so close together in time that the flash couldn't keep up. Electronic shutter would be preferable to mechanical or first-curtain electronic because no shutter shake. One shortcoming I have noticed when tethering for macro (using the Canon R8, Canon's EOS Utility, and a manual focus only, manual aperture only lens [Laowa 25mm f2.8 2.5-5x]) is that the focus peaking I see on the camera's LCD screen doesn't show in the EOS Utility software. Maybe taking HDMI output directly from the camera would be a workaround. The terminology around stacking is a mess. given how loosely people use the terms and how camera manufacturers use them. But here's my take: the final product is a "focus stacked image". Shooting a set of images towards that end is "focus bracketing" (that is, creating a stack). Putting those bracketed images together into an image with a high depth of field is "depth compositing" (to adopt Canon's terminology). Using those terms, we see some cameras capable of focus bracketing, and some in addition capable of depth compositing. You don't get a focus stacked image without both focus bracketing AND depth compositing of that stack of images. I think the in-camera compositing is a great convenience although probably compositing on a computer (using Photoshop, Zerene, or Helicon) will probably get the best result. But letting the camera take a first run at compositing the image might be a way to decide which stacks of initial images are worth doing carefully on the computer (plus, the in-camera composite is jpg only).

    Well presented. Great shots. You should do another piece about how you landed on using the particular flash equipment you're using. Also, are you ever using tripod for macro? If so, what sort of situations are you finding that advantageous.

    Hello and thank you for the compliments I really appreciate that. I definitely will be doing a whole episode about the godox flash I really love this flash. I do use a tripod sometimes but mostly I do handheld when shooting macro because I shoot mostly bees and they never stay still for me. I usually use a tripod for focus stacking but the ones in this video were done hand held. (I’ve never done handheld before the R7’s new built in focus stack feature) I hope that helps a little and thanks again for watching the channel! If you ever have questions always feel free to ask. I’m also in the process of developing my website www.photonphotographynj.com To be a resource for photographers that want to learn it’s a work in progress but I will get there and encourage people to ask questions so we can all learn together!

    I have the R7 and was experimenting with focus stacking, it's a shame it won't work with flash. I would have thought that my Godox V1 could keep up with HSS or with lowering the shutter speed. So I guess it's one or the other? BTW what lens is that? 100mm RF macro? I'm using extension tubes with EF24-106 L and best results seem to be between 50 and 70mm

    Great. I am doing a lot of macro on flowers, insects etc. and your review convinced to go for R7 from my current Canon 80D. I like the possibility of focus stacking. And for flowers I can use a tripod when doing focus stacking, if there is no wind that give movements in the flowers. I wonder if the finished focus stacked image will be jpg or raw format?

    Nice review. Now with the release of R6 mark 2, having focus bracketing and in-body focus stacking... which one will you prefer for macro and wildlife? R6 2 or the R7. I'm thinking about an upgrade and both are within my budget. I was even thinking of the R5. But I must need the focus stacking option. For macro its a must for me. It'll save a huge time in photoshop or Helicon.

  • @PPNJ

    @PPNJ

    Жыл бұрын

    @@billtomlin6176 it’s a hard question to answer. If you ask me which camera I think is better then hands down the R6 ii is the better camera. If I specifically wanted to shoot only wildlife and macro and wanted to take advantage of the crop sensor reach and pixel density then I’d say the R7 does have some definite advantages to it in those specific genres. Over all though the full frame cameras are just more full featured and built for professional use and you can tell when you use them. The R7 buffer is it’s weakness but still 9 times out of 10 for wildlife I grab my R7. Now if I have to choose just one camera though it would be my R6 ii but I do more then just wildlife and macro photography but also video features make me really favor full frame sensors.
