    I just ordered 2x Godox MF12's with a Godox Pro trigger. I know the standard diffusion is bad, but I actually use white seedling bags, rip them apart and use that as diffuser. Works perfectly on my current flash and LEDs. So I hope I can fiddle it between the flash and diffuser caps to get better results.

    I've been using the Godox 685. I'm fairly new to macro, although not that new to photography. I'm really enjoying this niche and have gotten some really good, (for me), results. I like the extra power the 685 has over the 350, and the flash itself runs about $120 here in the US. I would rather spend a little more up front, than have to purchase another flash down the road, because it just didn't have enough power. I can always dial it down, and have the advantage of quicker recycle times at lower power settings.

    I've been using the V350 (with my trusty hand-made diffuser) for 2 years now, it's still going super strong! Don't let anyone hate on Godox, they're a serious flash player. This one in particular is nice and light, has a great refresh time, and lasts for a ton of shots between battery changes. Extra rechargeable batteries are cheap, too!

    Useful video. Although I have Nissin flashes and transmitter I am now using custom LED Rotolight NEO II. Advantage is no regeneration time on flash, no batteries on the light to reduce weight, V-Lock D-Tap battery so virtually unlimited power supply, ability to use constant LED light so no restriction on shutter speed. I am still working on my customised system but already getting reasonable results currently using EM1 m3 and 90mm macro lens 😊

    One of the key advantages of flash is the motion freeze associated with the high speed exposure. With your continuous light source, what sort of shutter speeds can you achieve at, say, f16? Also, what is the light quality like - harsh or nicely diffused?

  • @TeddyCavachon
    @TeddyCavachon3 күн бұрын

    Natural Sun “key” comes from one direction above with a 45° angle at mid-day - providing the most accurate 3D rendering of shape in 2D photos which is why ring light flash and crossed flash don’t create natural specular highlight and shadow clues which is why the type of over the lens diffuser produces more pleasing results. Adding a second flash behind the subject at a 45° downward and side angle is a great way to add a natural look of back-rim lighting sun at mid-day with the diffuser then acting like diffuse skylight.

I have a globe diffuser similar to yours and am considering buying a Cygnustech. Still, I don´t have enough experience to know when I should use the globe with the flash off-camera or when it would be better to use the Cygnustech with flash on-camera. Wondering if you had any insights on the matter, thanks. Great videos as always.

    Honestly I don't think too much about it. I just vary between them to get some variation in my photography. An off camera flash with a globe diffuser is great when you want to get more creative with the light, and especially when you want to have the light behind the subject, which is a good idea when shooting water or raindrops. A diffuser like the Cygnustech with an on camera flash is very convenient as you only need one hand, and always gives a good result when shooting insects. It is the safe bet :)

Now i understood to keep it wider 😀. 2) i was always using 1/8 . now need to try ittl (some times multiple subjects like snakes frogs and insects )and 1/16 also. One additional doubt i have is should i use lens hood when using diffuser ? Will the lenshood prohibit the light to subject or helps to get light from subject ?

Unsure about how to go for a budget lens, should I try the ttartisan 40mm 2.8 macro since is a dedicated macro lens or get the ttartisan 50mm 1.2 with a couple of the usual 10mm/16mm extension tubes for versatility? Price is almost the same.

    As someone just getting into photography in general and interested in macro, I would love to hear your thoughts on filters. It seems no one recommends using filters for macro photography but, to the inexperienced like myself, it sounds like they can be useful, especially in bright sunlight. Would a polarising filter help eliminate the usual harshness of sunlight? Are there any circumstances when you would recommend using filters, with or without flash? Than you.

    Indoor & studio settings, sure! But I'm also sure you've noticed that Mr. Widell & so many others go to the field to photograph insects in nature. And in a lot of his photo walks he holds the camera with one hand & the other holds branches to make subjects more stable or get closer to his lens. So in the example you gave, he would have to bring lightstands to frontlight, sidelight or backlight subjects. Mr. Widell has been looking for ways to make his macro kit more portable & more agile as he progressed from the past to present. Camera, on-camera flash & a diffuser in one setup. And in the field that's exactly what's needed to be more efficient. 🙂

    Hmm either you are shooting at a very small aperture like f/16, or your flash is too weak. You could also try a diffuser with a "roof" that reflect light, like the AK diffuser, and then you could shoot at a lower strength. Could also be that the flash is too tall and shines above the diffuser so a lot of the light goes missing.

Why? you tell me! When set to 20 shots or more its pretty much hit or miss with a couple of blanks every time.
