Canon EOS R7 Final Review
Ғылым және технология
Canon's flagship APS-C mirrorless camera boasts some pretty impressive specs and some interesting (questionable?) design decisions. Jordan Drake took the camera on his family vacation to see how it would perform in a variety of shooting situations.

That autofocus pumping in the background on the vlogging sequence was Panasonish!
@mattdebyl8806

Yes! It was bloody awful, unusable IMO. I don't think it was focus hunting, but in fact the sides / corners getting further / closer to the sensor and thus changing how blurred the background is. It is SO warpy it made me feel seasick.

@@mattdebyl8806 You can check other reviews where they test this and it doesn't appear to do it. Maybe he had it in a weird AF mode... Honestly, this review seems very throw away. It didn't seem in depth like the others at all. He didn't go over how amazing the IBIS + Lens IS is.. Taking 640mm still on the RF 100-400 hand held at 1/50 and it being sharp is pretty damn impressive. Nor did he go into tracking birds, which is basically what this camera was designed for. Dunno, just seemed kind of sloppily put together.

Thanks Jordan, Yes I found in my review on my channel, the Canon lens availability really lets the camera down. And also no new third-party glass available for it it is shocking. It had mixed results with my older canon glass. The 18-150 kit performed better than expected though. Here is hoping some new RFS glass comes out and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Great job, Jordan! I haven't experienced any of the handling problems that you did. I actually kind of like the new dial-around joystick design. I love the case 2 tip and will be trying that soon when photographing birds in a thicket.
Looks nice given the price. I did notice that during the "vlog" segment, the AF was hunting in a very Panasonic way. Other than that, it's a good camera.

Recent discovery - you *can* have three control dials active at once in the R7's Manual mode to control aperture, shutter speed and ISO simultaneously with the histogram live all the time. Here's how: This setup relies on using the control ring on the lens as the third control dial, so on lenses like the R7's kit lens that use the control ring for focusing, you sacrifice manual focusing, but with lenses that have separate focus and control rings there's no sacrifice. That's any EF or EF-S lens with the EF to R Control Ring adapter, and any RF lens with both focus and control rings - like my Canon RF 100-400mm lens. (Actually, other than the two RF-S kit lenses this isn't a problem, since most RF lenses have both rings, and the five that have only one have a switch on the lens to switch its use between Manual Focus and Control Ring.) To set this up, go to page 6 of the AF tab in the settings screen and set the Focus/Control ring to Control rather than the default Focus setting. Then go to page 3 of the Camera tab and in Customize Dials you set the three dials up however you like. Since I used a pre-EOS Canon FT-QL for nearly forty years before going digital, and thus I'm used to having an aperture ring on the lens, I set the Control ring on the lens to AV. Since I'm used to setting the shutter speed on the top of the camera, I set the Main Dial to TV, and I put ISO control on the Quick Control Ring around the joystick next to the viewfinder. (Film cameras changed the ISO by changing the film you were using!) But you can assign those three functions between those three dials however you like. PS If you frequently want to focus manually with a lens that has only one ring, you can set one of your Custom Settings up to use the Control Ring on the lens for focusing and use the other two control dials however you prefer.

Nice overview! Definitely a very tempting camera for the type of video I do. Too bad about the rolling shutter in oversampled video but at least they give the option of subsampling like what's in my current M6ii. I don't assume the current Sony APS-C do and they definitely have the same issue with oversampled 4k. Canon support had said it can record duplicate video to the two SD cards which seems like a very nice feature (Anyone with an R7 want to confirm that?). Also having in-camera h.265 HEVC is appealing for smaller video files.

Great review, when I compare your Sensor video with this one, basically GH6 vs R7, I was surprised! Usually, Canon has this magic sauce with the picture detail thickness, but not this time. To my old laptop, your other video shot on GH6 looks better and less mushy with a more detailed picture. I was expecting the opposite, but this is the Canon Cripple hammer I guess. ! lol.
Have this camera for bit over 2 weeks, got used with tit works like a charm, it's amazing!
For an EF adapted lens test, that old 85mm 1.8 isn’t the best AF out there on wider apertures. It’s best in very bright & contrasty lighting, especially in live view on the 90D and 1DX iii, but the CA on that lens gets more noticeable in those cases (I sold mine for that reason). I’ve been using some EF / EF-S STM lenses, the EF 70-200mm 2.8 L v3 lens, and for giggles a 2003 28-75mm 2.8 Tamron, and I haven’t had any issues accurately nailing eye AF on the R7. 2 other notes: - I tried my R7 with the 100-500mm RF 4.5-7.1 L and it is an Amazing combo. - IBIS worked nicely with a pair of my old M42 adapted manual lenses (55mm 1.8 and 135mm 2.8)

Great Job Jordan!!
What mic were you using for this video? Audio sounded different (more background noise) than usual, as far as I could tell. Also maybe somewhat less higher end in Jordan's voice in this video??? And as a side note for those people who might be interested in Vlogging, I think that getting the cheap and cheerful EF-S 10-18 STM IS and putting it on an adapter would be good. There was an awful lot of corner warping in the vlogging section that Jordan demonstrated and maybe using a lens with good IS like the EF-S 10-18 would help reduce it??? (Plus you get the wider field of view than the kit lens that comes with the R7). I adapt the Canon EF-S 10-18 on my Panasonic S-series cameras and that lens does reduce the corner warping significantly (as opposed to using JUST the camera's IBIS for stabilization with wide angle lenses).
The R7 in my bag with the 18-150mm, the rf100mm macro, and the rf100-400mm lens weigh 9.5 pounds. A fantastic lightweight kit that goes from a cropped 18mm out to 640mm.

@@rickhenderson9028 That doesn’t matter though. A lens being APS-C or FF only relates to how big the image circle is that it throws. It doesn’t relate to the viewing angles. E.g. a 50mm FF lens and a 50mm APS-C lens will yield the same viewing angles on an APS-C camera.

Hi guys, thank you for your reviews of the R7 and 10. I'm confused as to why you (or any other reviewer I've watched or read) don't mention that the R10 has an in-built flash while the R7 doesn't. My partner and I regularly use the in-built flashes on our cameras (EOS 50D with a 70-300mm lens and a Panasonic FZ300) to fill in lighting or darken backgrounds for macro photography. I understand that a separate, dedicated flash will be vastly superior in a lot of ways, but not in convenience. An in-built flash is always available, you don't have to remember to bring it or spend time attaching it, possibly missing your shot. Why is so little (i.e. no) attention given to such a handy feature on the camera, and, for that matter, why do you think Canon decided to leave it off the R7, while it looks like there is ample space to install one? Our ideal here would be the R7 with an in-built flash... Canon, are you listening???? Cheers, Marco.

thanks Jordan
Do you know how the autofocus performs with older EF mount lenses as opposed to the newer mirrorless lenses?
You are correct that Canon needs to develop some additional RF-S lenses. They might have the means to do so quickly... Simply adapt some of their EF-M lenses. Actually they might have done just that with the RF-S 18-150mm... It appears very similar to the EF-M 18-150mm. Now if Canon would just do the same thing with the EF-M 11-22mm, EF-M 22mm, EF-M 28mm Macro and EF-M 32mm f/1.4. RF-S versions of each of those would answer a lot of immediate needs. It would be great, too, if Sigma and Viltrox each came out with RF-S versions of their EF-M lenses. Especially the Sigma 16mm and 56mm, Viltrox 56mm. Sigma has yet to produce an autofocus lens for RF mount. But Viltrox has their full frame capable AF 85mm f/1.8 RF II. Of course there are also already more than a few reasonably affordable full frame-capable Canon RF 24mm f/1.4 Macro IS STM ($599), RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM ($549), RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM ($499), RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM ($399), RF 16mm f/2.8 STM ($299), and 50mm f/1.8 STM ($179). Finally, there are some fairly affordable full frame telephoto options too... Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM ($599}, RF 600mm f/11 IS STM ($699) and RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM ($799). All those full frame lenses will work just as well on the APS-C cameras, as they do on full frame. Maybe even better, since the crop trims off the edges and corners where most affordable lenses are their weakest. But, why oh why did Canon feel the need to mess with good, familiar control layout? The joystick in the middle of the E.C. dial was a concern to me and you have confirmed it can be a problem. I agree about the lock mechanism in the mode dual, too. For years we asked for that on the DSLRs before they finally implemented it (on the 6th or 7th gerneration?) Now they take a leap backward? Hello, Canon! Dunno about the off/on/video switch, personally. So I'll take your word for it being another thing to gripe about. The final thing that bugs me is that Canon could easily have made this camera compatible with the BG-R10 battery grip used by the R6 & R5. The footprint of the R7 is surprisingly close to the same as those full frame models. If they had dine that and upgraded the resolution of the EVF, I bet people would have gladly paid more. It would have been more of a mirrorless 7D Mk II, rather than the mirrorless 90D it seems to be. (Canon tried to tell us the 90D was the successor to both 80D and 7DII, too, didn't they?)
Question on the lens lineup. Do the RF lens work with this camera? The comments about having to use an adaptor for EF lenses makes sense, but was the issue with RF lens mainly the price?
I totally agree with your on the new AF selection joy stick and exposure comp dial, it's super annoying and I really hate it. hope that's one time deal on the R7 but not the new style going forward, did you find the AF-On button also feels weird? really hope there will be a high end APS-C coming in the near future that's has a much better body ergo and control layout.
Thanks Jordan! I am curious to know what you don't like about the full frame RF glass (primes, for examples). They do offer pretty compact 16, 24, 35 and 50 primes, for example. Plus those will give us the option to continue using these lenses if we switch to full frame. Is there any decrease in performance or sharpness in using those with the R7?

Question: at 1:15 you mention moving your autofocus point. I thought that this camera had both subject detect and eye detect AF ... so if it automatically focuses on your subject, why would you ever need to use or move or select an AF point?automatically focuses on the subject
Thank you. I am using this G85 and Thinking about an upgrade to R7... G85 autofocus in video is....
Could be best for macro with built in focus bracketing and stacking plus IBIS and crop sensor.
That's strange about the EF 85mm f1.8. I use the very similar EF 10mm f2 on my R6 and the AF is spot on the very most of the times.
what lens line up for a crop sensor would be consider complete offering? primes - 12mm/16mm / 24mm/35mm .... and Zoom Xmm-Xmm?
I hope Canon can give us something like a 10-24-ish f4 (which would be like a 16-40 equiv.) zoom lens for this body, and some fast aperture primes and this camera becomes a whole lot more compelling. It's too bad about the EVF, really the only significant negative for me on this camera. A viewfinder with a 3.69mil dot resolution and solid refresh rate (at least 60fps, maybe a high speed 120fps mode at 2.4mil dots) would've made this camera nearly perfect for me. Either way I think I will end up picking this up sooner or later, probably the most appealing Canon RF body to me (R5 a bit too expensive; R3 too big & expensive etc.) despite a few of the drawbacks talked about here. The ergonomic issues may bother Jordan more than me though it is odd Canon seem to change random little things about the layout of the camera. I thought the R3 figured it out with the brilliant touch enabled AF-On button, which should become something of an industry standard in my opinion.

Evf is 1.15 magnification, which is kinda great?
You've not mentioned battery life. What's it like when shooting at a race track and how many shutters do you get per battery? Give or take
What I'm more interested about is the use of Canon 0.71x speedbooster and adapting EF glass.

Better to get a full frame camera rather than investing so much money on APSCs
Could you tell me what lens you were shooting w this?
For a wide prime, IE for vlogging, what about the RF 16mm? It's "affordable" and compact. Is 25mm equivalent not wide enough?
It is really a wonderful review and many aspects have been explained. I am presently using 7D ii + 100 - 400 mm ii + 1.4 iii extender (occasionally). With this combination, I feel out of camera photos are not so good beyond ISO 1600. Do you think, it will be a substantial upgrade if I switch over to R7 without changing the lens? Understand that autofocus will be much better with R7. However, my main concern is IQ at low light and subsequently high ISO performance. I am predominantly engaged in bird photography. Request for your comments please. Regards

If possible rent it first.... if not, buy and take good care of it.... gave a good run testing it and sell it if it doesn't fulfill ur needs.
I love a good episode of "Drake's Take"
What is interesting to me is that I did a side by side comparison of 'studio scene' images at Imaging Resource, between the R7 and the Olympus OM-1 (m4/3's), and the OM-1 images @ 100% look better in terms of noise, color, and detail at every ISO up to and including ISO 25600. I realize that the OM-1 sells for $600 more, but still -- m4/3's vs APS-C.

A Sony BSI stacked sensor vs Canon old tech is the difference.
I'm probably going to be getting mixed up with the power switch because I have the R and I change my ISO with the dial that's in the same position on the top right. I'll be curious to see how it plays with my Sigma lenses, I have a 50, and a 150-600 and I've been using them more than most of my RF lenses. I won't be getting any APS-C specific lenses, where I have a full frame, I want to make sure all my lenses work on both, so I think my best bet would be the 15-35mm. Although I really want to see how it works with the Sigma 50 as the bokeh is fantastic, and using the R body, the photos looked identical to Canon's RF 50 1.2, it's just that Sigma is 1.4 and heavier, but that's a small price to pay considering that price is basically half and I got mine used.
I want to know how well this autofocuses with the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 EF lens!
My Canon 80D shutter died and I had choice between 90D or R7 and I bit the bullet and went R7.....yeah some learning curves and buttons/wheels, etc in different areas or gone altogether but I will say it was a small learning curve and this camera, IMO anyways, is pretty easy to get comfortable with and is like night and day over the 80D. I am shooting it with my Sigma 18-35 1.8 and Sigma 70-200 2.8 and LOVE it. The animal tracking and the 30fps on the electronic shutter is amazing and makes me want spring migration of wildlife (especially birds in flight) to hurry up and get here. I also shoot sports so the 15 fps (over the 7 fps on the 80D) on mechanical as well as the 651 AF (over the 45 on the 80D) is a game changer. The 30 FPS on electronic is a nice option to have in your back pocket if the scene allows it (just keep in mind rolling shutter issues)/ Yeah a bit of a hefty price tag here in Canada ($2,500 with the adapter for my Sigma lens) but with my initial testing in the field and at the arena this was well worth it.

How’s the autofocus with the adapted sigmas? I’m planning on getting the same setup but a little scared it might not work as well with adapted lenses for video. Also, does the sigma 70-200 stabilization work with the R7?

@@leokingkong100 I haven't shot video yet with it......but for photo side AF is great....stabilization as well. The speed at which this camera locks in AF is insane (when comparing to my old 80D with the same lens). Certainly a game changer and a time saver....I imagine video is just the same.

@@CalTek thanks a lot! 👍
I did try the EF 8mm-15mm fisheye --- not to bad ... 12mm-24mm field of view
Interestingly I have no problems with the mode dial or the new control ring- might be more a fault with the reviewer than the camera. The on/off switch and the AF/DOf switch on the other hand i personally have found to be a bit annoying. Coming from an optical viewfinder I am not sold on the electronic one yet. I feel underwhelmed by the sharpness of the 18-150 at the wide end hope they bring out some better quality options for the wide end. My EF primes 400 F5.6 & 600 F4 seem to work flawlessly am happy with the AF and sharpness.
Sony A1, EOS R3, Nikon Z9, etc. What is the next level/name/type of camera after this, what are they called?
Great framing at around 3:00 in
You should do the R5 now since overheating seems a thing of the past

it still overheats all the time!
Was this shot with the kit lens?
the AF in the vlogging section looked horrible imo
Do ef-s lenses have a crop on the r7?For example the ef-s 10-18mm
2.36M dots comes out to 1080x720 3:2 aspect ratio with 3 rgb dots per pixel 2:07
6:20 I can see the hunting for the focus in the background
Compared to the Sony A7 IV is this better! Cos both are same priced in my country?
Looks like the camera was struggling quite a bit in the vlog segment, I guess it was just that specific situation?
There’s an Rf 16mm that’s super compact that I use to vlog on the R7

How is the quality with that combination? I'm considering picking up an r7 as my second body, for vlogging and travel vids. Do you think that's better than using an adapter and the ef-s 10-18mm?
@evansalmonsen
Жыл бұрын
@@KidPersepolis honestly I’m not 100% sure because I’ve never used the 10-18, but given this is a newer lens and a prime lens at the same price rate I’m gonna assume it’s probably a better image . Also 16mm is also plenttyyy wide for vlogging and I really would not want to go any wider so personally I wouldn’t see the purpose in anything lower than 16mm, 18 is a bit tight but 16 is perfect with room to spare , even if I had 10-18 I’d probably only use it at 16 , and maybe 18 for some photos , but for that I use the sigma 18-35 anyway

@@evansalmonsen thanks for the quick response. Being that the selection of lenses specifically made for crop sensors wasn't that impressive, the 10-18 was actually an exception, aside from some distortion which is to be expected on the wide end. I used it a bunch on a Canon 77D for landscapes and whatnot. I played around with the 16 mm you have, but on a Canon R, and I liked it for the price, but I know a lot of people complained about aberration, etc, but again it came down to choice and taste a lot for me. Despite the fact that the r7 and R are about the same price, I'm seriously considering picking up the r7, because I already have a few EFS lenses that I can use on it. Thoughts? How happy are you with it?
Thinking about this for wildlife vs the new Fuji, but that low res viewfinder on the canon puts me off, great review though as always.
