@@vaskoobscura_ Depends on the fan, and how it is mounted. Dedicated astronomy cameras all use fans in their peltier cooler designs and are able to avoid vibration problems. I am surprised the IBIS has been removed AFTER ADDING active heat management (scratching my head - why?). Ugh. Or perhaps, as an R5 owner, I should thank Canon for saving me $4,500. No IBIS is a deal killer for someone like me who loves a minimal, hand-held experience. The electronic stabilization retains micro-jitters as did my original EOS-R... I never used it. As for stills, once I received my R5, I never used the original EOS R again--it's really nice to not worry about motion blur with somewhat lower shutter speeds in the 1/15 and 1/30 range, even 1/60th at times. And I don't buy the overheating excuse as the Lumix S1h is very similar in design (cooling system) and has been reported to never overheat even in the worst of conditions (Dan Watson's channel and others). And then, no mention of Clog2... (firmware update in the future?). But this is a cool design (oops, unintended pun).

For years I've been wondering why they can't just make a camera that's between the crippled stills cameras with video and the high end cinema cameras, with a price that it's worth it for them to potentially lose out on a handful of sales of cinema cameras. I thought this was finally it, the robust video camera for the run and gun, one man band shooter. How hard is it to make an R5, with ALL the R5 features that won't overheat.... They've added a fan, but removed the better AF and the "heat creating' IBIS... What's the fan doing because realistically this should run cooler than an R5 without it! They're missing out on thousands of sales from 10 a penny shooters like me. Rant Over :D

As always, excellent work Gordon! I've been in search of the 'perfect' hybrid for years now, this Canon R5c might just be it! I was positive my perfect hybrid was a self made myth up until Sony released the A1. I already owned the R5 and C70 at this point keep in mind. I picked up the A1 and FX3, A7S3 with mindset of switching ecosystems due largely to 4k and 8K with no overheating. Admittedly, my own assumptions here were my an expensive lesson. I assumed Sony would play nice with Atomos. It does up to 4k 60p, anything above that, not an option as Sony doesn't output 8K via HDMI like Canon does with the R5. So with my Canon R5 I was able to use my Atomos Ninja V+ to extend all options the R5 offered. With Sony, I was held back to in camera because Sony has yet to unlock the HDMI out (for 8K) for Atomos or other external options. They did the same thing locking down 4k 120p out in the A7S3 and FX3 as well so again, no Atomos Ninja V+ options. It would seem Sony wants to keep things in camera. Nice way of upselling the Sony tough line of CFexpress cards I guess? So now on my gear shelf, I've expanded to include the R3 for other work along side my R5, C70 and R. The Sony Shelf has the A1, FX3, A7S3 but I feel that Sony's days may be numbered with me as I have been reaching time and time again for the Canon equipment purely out of compatibility in most cases. I had a deposit in place for the R5C from about four or five months ago when rumours started swirling about it so come March 15th, I'll have one and hopefully... I can stop overlapping gear. Probably not, but hopefully. lol 👍😂 A couple questions - 1) the R5c's 8K RAW out, that isn't the same ProRES Raw as found in the R5 is it? 2) Do you think the new RF 5.2 dual fisheye lens will work on this camera offering the ability to shoot 8k 60p (when attached externally for power) VR? Again, many thanks for your expertise and testing!

Gordon, I looked into the two questions I asked you and Canon themselves on the official support page for the R5C answer both of these questions. Yes, 8K Raw out via HDMI is ProRES Raw if used with the Atomos Ninja V+ (8K is only compatible with Ninja V+ where as 4K ProRes is with regular Ninja) and yes, the 5.2 Canon VR Lens works with the R5C. 👍🔥

I'm a bit sad about the no ND filter or the rolling shutter still being pretty bad to be honest and I REALLY hope they'll push the eye AF for animals in a firmware update in video mode cos that's really crap.. Can you tell us if the AF is akin to the C70 in video mode, or more like the R5? The C70, in my experience, has extremely subpar autofocus performance compared to the Canon R5. Since Canon essentially is running two separate OSes, my concern is that the R5c has C70-level AF performance in video mode, which would be a non-starter for me. Can you tell us if that's the case? I watched your entire video, but perhaps I missed your comment on it. Thanks for your hard work on the review.

I should have done some AF tests, but ran out of time. Anecdotally I found the Af was noticeably slower in movie mode than in photo mode, and slower than the R5 when that cameras is filming video. I could improve it by boosting the response and speed menus, but have a feeling it is slower overall. I'll try and follow-up with a final sample/

@@cameralabs Thanks Gordon. I was afraid of that. So unfortunate, because Canon already had a GREAT system with the R5. This is a regression, in some ways, for video. Two steps forward, and two steps backward. Of course, some couldn't care less about AF, so this camera will be perfect for them, but as a one-person shooter 99% of the time, great AF, like on the R5, is a must.

I'm in the same boat. The R5's AF is fast enough for me to shoot sports (in video mode). I'd be all over this R5c if it performs as well (AF-wise) in video mode as the R5. But if it's a step in the wrong direction, then it would be a waste of money for what I do.

I also was a bit disappointed about it now having IBIS at first, but then I remembered I was shooting on cameras without IBIS for the past 12 years and still managed to produce sharp portrait photos of moving models without it. Pretty amazing, isn't it? :-D My use case is filming complete concerts from beginning to the end while also doing a lot of portrait work with the 85 1.2 primarily. For the concerts, being able to film in 8k/60 for 2 hours and doing multiple "camera angles" in 4k with 4x or even full HD with 16x zoom for youtube is just amazing and exactly what I needed. And for portrait work, it is better in any regard than my EOS R, which is completely fine for me. I really wanted better AF than on the R as well as the resolution bump, which I got. Other video-centric alternatives from Sony can't give me that with their 12mp and while the Z9 looks great, there is nothing matching the RF 85 1.2 for portrait work on their side, which is my 90% lens. So many of the cameras released in the last 2 years are outstanding photo cameras but were taking down a notch because of some issue shooting video. I shoot Sony(A9)and smile every time some youtuber whines about no picture profiles for video, I would have been very happy to shoot with a Canon R6 but folks went on about 30 min record limit and an occasional overheat in video. I am happy to see a camera like the R5C because as video resolutions become so high companies will have to make more dedicated video centric cameras and leave us photographers alone, 1 more thing FLIP SCREENS are better than articulating screens with 600mm lenses 🤣, yes I know I am old school and whining but that is my story and I am sticking to it✌

You're right, of course, but the questions for the manufacturers are always the same: How many units can we sell, and how long will the model last? It's a real dilemma in these days of constant updates. For example, the "antique" Panasonic bridge cameras (FZ300, FZ2500), which are now nowhere near state of the art, have suddenly started selling again! How come? I'm not sure anyone knows. But regardless, if you have the cash, this camera will provide excellent results for both stills and video. . . just make sure to insure the damn thing! Finally, I find it hilarious that modern cameras might actually burst in to flames! That's not something anyone even imagined way back in the film days! 😎

I wouldn't knock a camera for doing what its supposed to do, and anybody complaining the a9 isn't a video camera needs to read spec sheets better. Since the r5 and r5c are both pushed by Canon as being video cameras, they deserve criticism when they don't deliver or praise when they actually do what's promised.

Great review Gordon, have you tried the Canon RF-EF ND converter on this or the R5? It'd be good to know whether there are any colour issues, otherwise looks like a good solution to the lack of ND's, if you're still using EF lenses.

I haven't tried the ND, only the polarising one but I'm guessing it'll be pretty good.

Hi Gordon, which camera do you use for recording yourself, super clear. I think you are also an expert in light too.

I am really thinking this may be my next camera. Coming from 5d Mk4. So I never had the joy of in body stabilization and I have been getting a lot more into video.

If it's mostly for video, then the R5C is a good choice, but if its a mix, then do consider the R5.

I found R5 footage is to shaky and wobbly when filming in 8k . I wonder how it will be in R5C ?

Thanks for this. The one thing that makes this camera unsuitable for me is that you boot it up in video OR still. No switching quickly in the middle of action between video and still. Is that right?

Not having IBIS is quite shocking, if they really want it to be a hybrid camera. Without IBIS you need an additional R5 just for stills, as IBIS is the main killer feature of mirrorless cameras.

It is a real downside if you intend to use it for stills with unstabilised lenses.
