Tony & Chelsea Northrup which camera will be better Canon 70D or Canon 6D

Tony & Chelsea t6i
Rewatched this today 3+ years later... after having owned the 6D for those 3+ years, and finding it to be a great camera for architectural documentation. The 6D's low light level capabilities are awesome. The thing is a tank, and battery life has been excellent. It also has the added bonus of being completely winter capable (in Northern Canada) down to -30C + windchill over a 5 hour continuous period. My iPhone died from the cold, but the 6D was a trooper. With the 5D MK IV coming, I am looking for a 5D MK III as a backup body (and travel camera). 6D remains my FF DSLR of choice for architectural documentation work. It was entertaining watching this comparison and seeing how the 6D ranked... very well...and despite that it was somewhat panned when it was first released. Time is showing that infact, the 6D hit a sweet spot, and is well designed for the right purpose, and a great value.
Best comparison ever! Not biased, not snobby and explaining the items that really matter.
Good question! Wish I had mentioned it in the video. It's the max shutter speed you can use with a flash that doesn't support high-speed sync. That includes most inexpensive third-party flashes (such as my favorite YongNuos) and most studio lighting. In practice, there's no difference whatsoever; it's only 1/3 of a stop, and most people never run into that limit.
By far one of the best and most comprehensive videos on KZread on any subject. Excellent job!!!
Superb. Very, very informative unbiased review. It all comes down to your needs and your budget.
Though i have a 5d III now but used to have a Canon 600d with a Canon 24-70 f2.8 Mark II and i was amazed at the results produced by the 600d. Investment in a good glass even for enthusiasts like myself is more important as L Glass has a good resale as well and can be used on literally all canon bodies past present and probably future.

I have the 700D and want to upgrade to full-frame, how noticeable has the 5d Mark III been in performance and focusing? Especially in shallow DOF? I've been struggling with focus and recomposing at 1.4 1.8 etc
Thanks, Derek. It actually took about 40-50 hours to make, on top of the years that I've spent using different cameras... this video was a huge endeavor :) The 70D looks to be great (I'm sure I'll review it when it's available)... but it's not going to have full-frame image quality, so feel confident with the 6D.
Great comparison! People always just compare the full frame or the APS sized censors but this is the first that has actually spent a lot of time doing a comparison across the entire line. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into this. I've learn a lot!
You are awesome, I just don't understand how I just discover you today. Thank you so much for all your videos.

Excellent video Tony! This really helped me decide where to make my investment! Thanks to your wife for modeling and you have a beautiful home! God bless!
Thanks for buying the book, and welcome to the group! Enjoy the new camera!
Thanks, Nathan. I haven't used the Fuji, though I do know it's a great camera. As I say in this video, it really depends on the type of photos you want to take. The small sensor and mirrorless design aren't great for sports, portraits, or wildlife, but it works well for landscapes, candid, street, and casual photography.
This is the best review I ever seen.

Tony...This is by far the most informative, in depth, well planned and executed 'review' video I have ever watched! Many thanks to you and Chelsea for this, and all your excellent videos..John in Bristol, UK
This is one of the most intelligent and well delivered reviews I have come across in a long time. Very well done Tony! I think you give over valuable information and understanding of what weight to attach to equipment versus technique for getting better photos. I bet few people understand this !
Well, I'm 39, but I don't feel old :). I've been going grey since my early 20s.

Hello Tony, I just subscribed to your channel yesterday (4/11/15) because you are so good at what you do and thank you for helping us here. I am thinking to start freelance into indoor nude modeling photography and so want to ask you what camera and lens and other pieces of equipment would I need to start my business? I do have a limited budget to start with... The very minimum material with which I could start cashing in if you see what I mean. I was gonna message you privately but not sure is possible... Thank you again Tony. Regards, Robin.

+Top Fitness Heya, Robin. Just about any camera will work to start with. This can help: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pamWptaTebXTnqg.html
Valid points! I'll say, for me, all those are "nice to haves" that definitely make the higher-end cameras a little more convenient to use, but haven't really impacted my shooting... with a couple of exceptions. The "silent" shutter mode (which isn't at all, but is quieter) is good for close-range wildlife, weddings, and photojournalism. That locking mode dial is a life saver. If you need the full video out, you definitely need it. I do cover the focusing in quite a bit of detail.
This is lovely. And hilarious! I don't think I've ever seen another one of your videos where Chelsea was in the background! This must have been a very, very short period of time! Keep up the good work.
i am on the edge of buying 5D mark II used, after watching the video 6D looks like better value or stick with 5D mk2? i am spending 1000$ on 5D mk2 which one wud you suggest, thanks in advance.

+suji sun 6D !!!!
I haven't used them, but I'm excited about them--and the 1.8 zoom that they have coming out. The right lens really depends on what you're shooting, whether the shots are static and dynamic, if it's hand-held or tripod mounted, etc.
Glad to hear it. Thanks, Shelli!
For DAVE DAVIES! I'm a low light shooter with the 6D, so there the Canon 6D is much better then Nikon 610D. And a little detail: the only 11 AF points of the 6D are very precise, so boys of Nikon's, if you want the side of the numbers, take it! I choose the real quality of the Canon 6D. And another thing: in this video, the comparision of Low Light is very unfaire: 7D at ISO12800 vs 6D at ISO 20000 vs (atention!!!) 5Diii at ISO 16000!!! If you compare the 5Diii and 6D at egual ISO 20000, the 6D is the winner !!! Prove it! Anyway, The 6D not afraid the comparision at Low Light with the Nikon 610D, 800D and 810D. So.... give me a break!!!!

I know! I was stunned to have useful shots at such high ISO:s, it practically gave me chills. I love my 6D (I used to own a 700D/T5i which was pretty terrible in all but perfect conditions)

The 6D is better than the D610 in low light, when you're shooting video and JPEGS. The processing software is better at getting rid of noise in the 6D. However, if you shoot RAW, they are very similar. Whether it's the 5D Mark III, 6D, D610 or D810, you should expect very similar results when you're shooting RAW.

Yes. Try to find a used kit on eBay (or someplace similar).
You mean, if you are rich, you can buy a Canon 1D X ;)

But that may be little too bulky for general use.
In most of your comparisons 5d2 doesn't exist.. The abandoned kid in the family.. Almost bullied by the rest Canon family members..

George Lago It's still a very usable camera...we continued using ours until last fall when it was killed in a flash thunderstorm. Most people want to see current cameras compared, however, and each camera we compare makes the entire filming and editing process more expensive.

Tony Northrup yes but there are others also -like myself- who want to see if replacing their 5d2 really worths it.. and honestly i couldn't see that.. Since you refer 5d2 on the title i believe it should have a place between the side by side comparison.. Anyways i really like your work but just got a bit frustrated..

+Nick Korn, if you love shooting jpegs, you can use your cellphone. The lens profiles are all there in Lightroom and in other picture processing softwares. We shoot RAW. And yes, mkII is not the best performer in terms of AF in low-light, but it does get the job done.

I am now at the point where I need to upgrade. I have 2 5DMk2's and they are getting a bit long in the tooth now it has severe banding issues I have impeccable glass but the noise is quite bad when I shoot in shadows I asked a shop about my choices and they came up with the 6d & 5dmk3 as i dont want to change to any other brand I buy 2nd hand so the prices are good on both the 6d & 5dmk3 now I use lightroom I have pixapro lighting I have gary fong modyfiers and a softbox and umbrella etc . . . I shoot headshots weddings & portraits however I did use my 5dmk2 & 70-200 f2/8 for a trackday and the results were awesome
Good call--I love that T3i! Wish the other cameras had the articulating screen!
Thanks for this. Very well presented and done so without bias. Much appreciated!
Thanks for this video! I love how you focus on comparing the differences in a way that will actually matter to me as a real-world photographer rather than just nitpicking about specs. Really helped me decide what features I actually needed without stressing about stuff that's ultimately not important. No need to triple the price just to get marginally higher IQ I only notice in 4:1! I'll be going from 60D to 6D since I'm happy with current quality but really feel like I would benefit from having a full frame.
Yes, we cover setting up a studio and all the equipment you need in Chapter 6. Enjoy! BTW, links to the book in the description. Thanks!
You’re videos are SUPER helpful! Bless you 👏🏼👏🏼
Hi, Myl. It's a general photography book, so it covers a bit of everything. Check out the links in the description. The Amazon, link, in particular, will allow you to see objective reviews so you can determine whether it's right for you. I love the Tamron 24-70 for everyday shooting; it's fast and it has IS. It's the only lens of it's type. I recommend it regularly. However, if you have an ASP-C/crop body, I'd instead recommend the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 or Sigma 18-35 f1.8.
I own an 80D and was interested in an older/used Canon full frame camera so I can use most of the good glass I already own. It was extremely confusing (to me) due to all the models available, but this video has clarified and simplified my choice... This video is an obvious labor of love and patience. I thank you for this incredible effort, as this is the very best of any comparison video, old or new..!! Yes, I own your fine book and recommend it to everyone. Thanks again..
Thanks, Brian! For the record, the only reason I skipped the 60D is I didn't have one I could borrow for the test. It's a very capable camera.
Thank you Tony and Chelsea for the time and effort in making this informative video. I found this video enjoyable but most of all, very helpful! Thanks again!
Excellent review Tony. Thank you for the thorough side by side look and also your personal recommendations regarding types of camera body for certain applications/users. Very useful and much appreciated.
Thanks, Stefan! Enjoy the book!
Thanks, and you're welcome! If you look through my videos you'll see a studio tour where I cover my most important studio gear. And yeah, it was all pretty cheap, but gets the job done :)
Yes, it's a great camera. The video should help you determine your priorities. The 60D is in-between the T3i and the 7D that I review in this video.
Great idea! I'll add that to the to-do list. :)
Tony, I really enjoy your book and your vid here. This was top notch! Beautiful family as well! Keep up the good work and best to you!
Hi, Ng. Certainly, either camera would help. If you stay with a compact/crop sensor camera, you might consider the Canon 17-55 f/2.8. It lets about 4x the light in as your 18-200, which makes focusing much faster, and will allow you to use lower ISOs and blur the background better. It can reduce chromatic abberation, too--though another way to help solve that is to shoot raw and process the images in Lightroom. Check Chapters 4 and 5 of my book (link in the description) for more info.
Of those, the 5D Mark III, certainly. Check my Photography Buying Guide (all of it, but especially Chapter 1) and Chapter 7 of Stunning Digital Photography for detailed information about the gear you need for shooting a wedding, as well as the technique. You can use the 'Worldwide' link in the description.
Wow. That is by far the best camera comparison and review I've ever seen. Really well done. Thank you.
Thanks, Nate (and everyone else)!!
Hi, Edward. I pride myself on having an easy-to-understand writing style (this is my 32nd how-to book). Plus, the book is extremely visual, with picture examples for everything, and 3.5 hours of video. You also get access to a private group on FB for interactive help. Under $10! These are specifically to help people with different learning styles. Many in my family are dyslexic, and as you can imagine, books aren't their favorite, but I always strive to write a book that they would enjoy.
A great and complete review of current Canon line-up!!! thanks for all the effort Tony!!
Thanks, Jimmy! Be sure to join the FB group (information in the introduction) and let me know if you have any questions!
Get the 6D, that's perfect for what you want to do. The GPS will be really helpful, too. Links in the description, at least if you're in the US.
Very clearly articulated, thorough review. Thank you!
Hi, Myl. Check Chapter 8 in my book for examples showing why I recommend more telephoto lenses for portrait work. The 50mm f4 is great for blurring the background, but for rendering flattering features (especially with headshots)--notsomuch. Zooms also make your portrait work go much faster. I went into more detail in another message, but your kit lens will probably do the job for street and landscape photography. If it's failing in some particular way, let me know.
Any of the focus points will work for that type of shot, but you'll still have to focus-recompose because they're not very far spread out. Watch the Natural Light Portraits segment for a demonstration of the focus point reach and a discussion of this.
Your Videos are the best I saw so far! Keep up your great work!
One of the best videos I have seen covering camera's that fit everyone's budget. Love that you recommend used so often. Often I have seen the 5DM2 or 7D well under retail pricing.
such an awsomely explained video KUDOS man loved the way you explained each and evry aspect
Glad to hear it. Yes, don't trust anyone who recommends a camera or lens without asking what type of photography you're doing or discussing the types of photography it's best suited for.
For wildlife, yes. Check out my wildlife equipment video for more info. In the next day or two I'll release a 70D review specifically for wildlife. For sports, it really depends on the sport. For indoor sports (which tend to be dimly lit) I always push people to a full frame camera. Re: "nature", not including wildlife, a full frame camera is generally better.
Hi, Arturo. I'm not sure I understand the question, but if you're asking if the 7D is a good value, it's a great value. In fact, i bought a used 7D just after making this video because I wanted one for myself, even though I have a 5D Mark II and Mark III.
What a great and thorough review. I'm currently preparing to jump from a crop to full sensor, so this video was a life saver.
A very in-depth review. Highly appreciated, highly recommended!
It depends on the lighting. Check Chapter 6 of Stunning Digital Photography for complete information. In my studio, I typically use manual mode, 1/90th, f/8 or f/11 depending on the skin tone, and ISO 100.
It really depends on your total budget, including what you need to spend on lenses. This video and my Photography Buying Guide (use the 'worldwide' link in the description) will be the best resources to help you make the decision. They'll all get the job done. The 7D has the most reach. The 5D3 has the best AF system and better image quality than the 7D if you can fill the frame. The 6D has a solid AF system and full-frame quality. Also consider the 70D, especially if you want to do any video.
Thanks, Pinnie! If low light is your goal, definitely get the 6D. On ebay, you can sell your lens for around 80% of what you paid new, so don't sweat the upgrade too much. Which lens you want depends on the type of shooting you plan to do--portraits, landscapes, events, weddings, etc. I use the 24-105 as my walking around lens.
I'm grateful that there are awesome people such as yourself who take the time to make such an informational video like this. I'm on amazon ordering your book.
The Tamron or Sigma 70-200s. Check the recent portrait photography video for suggestions and specifics. For even less, an 85mm f1.8 is an awesome portrait lens.
Very informative! Thank you for comparing all of these. It really helped me choose.
Great, in depth review Tony. Bravo
Really enjoyed watching your video Tony. Very comprehensive - looking forward to reading your book now :)
Usually either a 5D Mark II or 5D Mark III, and Sennheiser G2/G3 wireless lav mics (directly into the cameras)
Fantastic video thank guys! I greatly appreciate the time and effort which has gone into this review. I had already made up my mind to move from the T3i to the 6D from your "Buying Guide" however seeing this video comparison has given me even more confidence.
I really appreciate this review video. You really captured all the elements that I have been going though all on one easy to follow video. I currently have a T2i and have been going over which full frame DSLR to get. Thanks to your video I have decided on the 6D and getting some glass over the 5Diii without.
Yes, that's why I put the text overlay on that section saying to ignore it... I had borrowed a friend's 7D which didn't have it installed. Incidentally, I liked the 7D so much that I bought one for myself after the review.
I really like comparison videos like this! I currently use a T3i (my beginner camera) and I am looking to upgrade. Videos like this really help! I would LOVE to see an updated comparison that includes the 6D Mark II and 80D in the mix with the 5D Mark III and 7D Mark II, as they all seem to be in the same 1k-2k price point depending on what sales can be found.
Yes
Yes, I have a 70D pre-ordered already. I'm really excited about the video focusing capabilities for the work I do... Subscribe to the channel to be sure you see it!
Really well done, thorough video. You covered a lot of my questions between the 5DIII & 6D.
Sensor size does affect DoF, as I demonstrate with examples in this video. In fact, it's one of the most important factors when choosing a camera body, for both still photos and videos. The entire rise of the DSLR video market is because of this fact. I didn't apply any noise reduction. If it's softer, it's not a noise problem, it's probably focusing or motion blur or camera shake, but you can still separately evaluate noise.
Yes, Nate, the ebook with 3.5+ hours of video is available in several different formats for reading on computers or just about any mobile device. There's a link in the video description, but it's a bit buried :). Use the link next to "$8.99 eBook or $16.99 paperback".
You have a pretty wicked voice. I'm sold haha. In all honest, I like how detailed and critical you are in your videos.
Thanks Tony This might be the best photography video I have ever seen for comparing cameras. I will check out the book for sure.
I switched between the different cameras. For audio, it's a Sennheiser EW100 G3
Thank you so much for this video. It helps me to understand what’s really the difference between these cameras. Awesome. Love the 6d
Been watching your videos for a while now and just wanted to say thanks for your in depth coverage of the cameras and settings etc.. im still undecided over a 6d or 5dm3 and i think this jut sold me a 6d :)
Yes. If you buy it from the 'worldwide' link in the description, you'll get the full .iBooks version that's too big to fit into the official iBooks store. Thanks!
Tony thank you and Chelsea for doing this video. I started watching your youtube videos a few months ago and soon after bought your book on Amazon. This review was incredible,
Thanks, Fabio!
Well, check out the natural light and studio portrait sections of the video. My suggestion is to use the cheapest possible body, such as a T3, and to save your money for lenses, lights, props, outfits, makeup, hair, etc.
Incredibly good review and comparison as usual Tony. Thank you very much.
Tony, Thank you so much for your videos and all of your help that you provide. I purchased a T2i last year and my passion is shooting motorsports. Last year I shot a motorcycle race with my kit lens and this year I was able to pick up a 55-250 lens and IMO had great success for what I had to work with. I did have an issue with A/F catching the bikes while I was tracking them, but when using M/F and knowing where I want to hit my subject it worked well.
great video Tony! Love your stuff and I will be downloading your book!
Either will do, but I'd get the 6D because the live view display is so bright--that'll definitely help with focusing with that lens (which gets REALLY dark at high magnifications).
It's perfect for field work because it has that wonderful full-frame image quality. That GPS will be terribly useful for finding your way back to a spot after you've shot it (to shoot it again in different conditions).
Thanks, Emma!!
Absolutely excellent review. Great points and great advice! Thanks!
Thanks, Mel!! Enjoy, and let me know if you have any questions. Be sure to join the private Facebook group (link in the introduction)
Thanks!
