Candy Craftsmanship: Korea's First Family of a Classic Confection

In Chungju, South Korea, Bong-Seok Kang and his family carry on a generations-long tradition of a sweeter sort than most: they make yeot, a taffy-like candy that dates back more than 1,000 years. Originally a treat for the privileged classes, the stretchy confection is more popular than ever among everyone, and Kang’s authentic version is based on a 140-year-old family recipe. Hand-pulling the candy to get the perfect texture and making sure that his yeot is never too sweet is a legacy of craftsmanship that Kang values highly, and all it takes is one bite to see why.

Actually, in the old days(during Joseon dynasty, and quite possibly until late 20th century), korean parents did told their kids that these candy men(Yeot-jangsu, 'Yeot seller') would cut off their ding-dongs with their giant scissors to discourage kids from snacking.

Alice B In Korea, they don't care about Hygiene as much as the western countries do. For example, Korean restaurants have customers share and reuse utensils without actually washing them. Although it does sound a bit gross, I do get it. You have an immune system for a reason lol and you can't die or get sick from a little bit of saliva anyway

Just for your information, in Korea we usually present "yeot" to those who are planned to take an exam soon. But "yeot" is also often used as an metaphor for the middle finger(the Fxxk you finger). Which is why "eat yeot" can also be a swear in Korea.

Hey admin, can you tell the video editor to stop cutting in the middle of what he's trying to say in Korean? For example, the craftsman was saying "Yeot is not overly too sweet but also..." and the video goes into the next scene without further explaining what he was about to say after that. There's a saying in Korea that you gotta listen to the end of the sentence to truly understand when you talk to a Korean. If you hire me, I'll edit videos recorded in Korea more smoothly without chopping sentence in the middle than your current editor.

It's kinda like a trademark of Yeot. You can see people who sell yeot in markets opening and closing scissors making the clinking sound to get attention and they do use those scissors to cut the candy and sell it. For the man to have his own shop and do it, it was probably for the camera and performance.

ClusterFuckerery Because, we think the apologies are 建前, not 本音. The right wing politicians of Japan are doing their best to change the apologies done by former governments. 河野談話 (こうのだんわ), 村山談話 (むらやまだんわ), 菅談話 (かんだんわ) have always been threatened by right wings. And, Japanese people prefer right wing politics. The people of the republic are responsible for their government.

Just in case you guys get to eat this, be careful not to chew it right away. Some of them can be very hard, and maybe even dislocate your jaw or break your teeth And it's more of an acquired taste. It's not like the super sweet candy you buy in stores and might even be slightly bitter, like caramel.(because let's be honest, not many countries were abundant with surgar a thousand years ago)It's popular amongst the older generation, but not as much for people in their 20s or the elderly. basically, it's Korean licorice.( did I spell that right? lol idk) some love it, but some hate it. Fun fact: yeot is also a slang for middle finger, which in turn means f you in Korean

There’s a Korean phrase called “eat yeot” which means gtfo 😂 I remember in the Jeju island market there were yeot vendors dressed as Korean clowns with “eat yeot” written all over their cart it was hilarious!! I also have a yeot horror story: since yeot is like taffy, it’s very sticky and my gold teeth filling came off 😬😬 so I had to get it replaced like 2 days before coming back to Canada (to prevent cavity)

Who is translating this? Half of the dialogue is omitted or misinterpreted. At 1:55, the narrator never states that "you can still make yeot without pulling", he simply states that eating it without pulling would be hard. Also, at 2:10 and again at 2:12, the narrator's dialogue is completely cut mid-sentence.

lololol. love it. Koreans have been making this for over thousand years without fanfare. freshly made yeot is awesome. This is best of Korea. unadulterated genuine culture unheralded and pervading in 2017
