Cancer town: 'People are dying horrible deaths'

The Louisiana town where cancer haunts the streets: 'People are dying horrible deaths'
Subscribe to The Guardian on KZread ► is.gd/subscribeguardian
Residents of the town on the banks of the Mississippi River have watched as family members and neighbours have been lost to cancer. Official figures show the risk of cancer from toxic air is 50 times higher in Reserve than the national average. Feeling neglected by politicians, they are fighting back against the chemical plant has been emitting chloroprene into the air for half a century

Interesting how these things don’t ever seem to happen in affluent communities.

Well this town is right outside of New Orleans, need I say more... What's strange is that most of these plants are in Laplace, the next town over, but you don't hear about this kinda stuff happening in Laplace. This whole southeast side of Louisiana is nothing but poverty and crime. Born and raised here and don't know why I've never left😕

The fact she's still capable of considering the economic well-being of those who rely on the plant for employment is admirable and something I don't think the majority of people could do. But this underlines the point, that when a woman threatened by disease has a greater capacity to care for the well-being of others than those protected from it, there's a problem with the moral fabric of society that extends far beyond corporate profiteering.

😥 Sad. Cancer is a horrible agonizing way to die. More so knowing that it could be prevented and knowing the cause and being ignored. Sad.

Just the opening scene with the old lady was eye opening. Cancer, cancer, cancer! Everyone has cancer! The worst part is that I'm from South Jersey, I can say the similar things about my home town area.

Dupont pass the baton to Denka and it continues the deadly massacre. These people hide behind words. Empty words. And that black representative of the county should be completely ashamed of himself. These companies have him in their pocket. The fact that they say we've provided you jobs that poison you at the same time is evil.

I wish I learned about this subject in school. Thank you for informing me. Another great youtube video to watch on this subject is 'Words Have Power' on Planet Classroom Network. This video tells the story of a young girl fighting and speaking for Connecticut to shut down their last coal-powered plant.

It's a lot harder to prove association than one would think, anecdotes like shown here are barely evidence. There should be better science, the group is well defined and confounding factors like higher cigarette smoking rates, socioeconomic factors, alcohol consumption and obesity can be estimated and controlled for. Show us that science. Cutting the research funds for the EPA (and the patchwork of health care funding) doesn't make much sense.

So the plan is to run a 30 year longitudinal study? At the end, if we wind up concluding that the plant was indeed at fault, what do we say to the dead subjects of our scientific study?

Yeah sure, continue to sleep. Most probably you're one of those persons who are making profit over people deaths so it looks fine to you, but won't last long, one day you'll have their same problems, will be nice to die from cancer or to watche your children suffering from that? mhh I don't think so
