Canadian National and The Illinois Central Railroad hauling Ash through Columbus Ohio!

Фильм және анимация

You and I, in Columbus on ETR business, with some extra time to train watch! We find locomotives from Illinois Central and CN on a unique run through freight, a unit train of Pot Ash.
Yes.... we are busy building the ETR into a great railroad, but we have time....relax.

I'm from Marion KY. Illinois Central and GULF was the railroad in my home town. The trains have been gone for Years The tracks have been pulled to Princeton. When my grandma Nannie was a kid Marion had 5 freights and 2 passengers everyday. Moms dad's family's fluorspar mines in Crittenden Co.and Peabody's coal mines and other coal mines in Union co. running strong. Wasn't Casey Jones an engineer for the ICG? It's got an interesting history for sure. When I was a kid ICG colors were white and orange.

The cargo on this 95 car train would run between 9,500 tons to 10,450 Tons. Each car would carry 100 tons to 110 tons of cargo, pot ash.

Bill Well, I could claim I did that on purpose! ( but that's not true ) That would have been a 10 car train! Its a typo, I meant 10,000 tons. On the car count, I lost track and called it 100. Gold star on your test paper today! Brian

I used to receive a fair amount of fertilizers by rail, as well as sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Anywhere from 90,000 pounds to 220,000 pounds, depending on the product, manufacturer, and the cars available. Be careful at the ETR about cars and car weights unless you have good rail and the roadbed underneath it is well maintained. Critters that undermine your rail for homes will not be your friends. Big loads don't like 'soft feet' in the rail.

Used to be that potash was seasonal business and the private car owners had to scramble to lease track to avoid charges from the railroads in the off season. That may all be different now but may be a business opportunity for ETR if the track is repaired. This is a very nice 2 minute look at railroads at their finest. Good track, good equipment and good business.

CANPOTEX. Basically, Canadian potash export. I see those trains regularly, usually pulled by the CPR, two units in the lead, two middle DPUs and two DPUs on the end. I'm not positive but the cars may be government owned and leased to the potash corporations.

A couple weeks ago I was down in Cincinnati and saw what I think is an old Milwaukee Road engine, I really wished I had my camera with me to take a picture of it. I&O runs the old B&O mainline threw Blanchester now and sometimes you get to see a lot of the fallen flag rail cars rolling threw town like Rock Island to Vermont Central to an old Clinchfield coal car. But there still fun to see. Bandit

Speaking of cabooses (cabeese?), I remember back when railroad first stopped using them, and trains all looked weird without them. Now, when I see (for instance, an old film) a train with a caboose, it looks out of place somehow. Not that I don't love cabooses--I love them!--but they are so rare these days that seeing one is always a surprise.
