Always kinda sad seeing a locomotive cut up. I remember when they started phasing out the old covered wagons ( F units) back in the early 70's. Our local railroad Seaboard Coast Line used them as trade in credit for the GE U36B. And, yes everyone hated those GE's except the shop crew (job security trying to keep them running...) Thanks for the premiere, Brian. Stay safe!

@@billmorris2613 I can agree with you on that. The U33B and U36B did pull good when starting, but you had to be sure you didn't work the throttle too hard, otherwise they would kick the ground relay or overspeed, or in some cases have an electrical fire in the cabinets. Those FDL series engines just wasn't what GE hyped it to be. Many times if we had more EMD's in the consist, we would either isolate them in or just shut them down altogether. When CSX decommisoned them, there was no tears shed from me or anyone that ran them. Good riddance to those rolling piles of junk.

@@georgecarter838 B-23 and B-30 units weren’t much better, and the C-36 units were junk. We finally ended up disabling the dynamic brakes on all of those because we couldn’t keep the grids from burning up. And the cooling fan tower……what a pile. Ours were so worn out at the 90 degree gear box it wasn’t funny. You could hear that mess in the cab with the doors and windows closed. I was never so glad to see anything leave the property except for those gensets they turned the B-23 and B-30’s into after we got rid of them the first time.

BNSF used to run a GP28P that was rebuilt out of a former 1959 Northern Pacific GP9 for local service. It is 1 of 10 that are equipped to be used with rotary plows, hence the "P". There was also one of the first new SD40-2s built for BN in 1972, and still (even in 2022) wearing BN green paint. Both have since moved on to other yards but are still at work yet.

The eye bolt snapped while lowering the motor and the motor didn't even slow down as it went thru those 2x6's. I kinda miss working on old Big Red and its little brother, a 1949 GE25 tonner.

I'll share a story, but it is scaled down a little. When I was 16 I was an avid model railroader. I spent a few wintry months in my grandfathers shop building an L-girder layout table at 39 inches height. Right to spec from the book. It was to hold up a 4x8 MDF table that had folding legs on it in my parents basement. I disassembled it and transported it home. When it was completed it was a fine, sturdy, level space just screaming to be modelled. Then the next day my mother came down to do laundry. There was a loud shriek followed by curses that the huge monstrosity would NOT be staying in the basement! At 16 you will never win the argument with your mother. So I disassembled the table and took it back to the shop. I then proceeded to cut up the MDF into two 2x6 and one 2x4 module plates. In hindsight I managed to get one six footer more complete than the whole 4x8. Including a working turntable using the pulleys out of a drum humidifier and the motor for an old cassette recorder. Unfortunately college comes along and hobby money dries up. Learning to break down a problem into manageable chunks and persevere even in the face of management has served me well over the years! I just wish I'd of asked my grandfather to teach me basic welding back then. Farmers are some of the most thrifty geniuses going. But I think I see two more munching donuts by the potbelly wearing ETR hardhats! (wink)

One time at our local museum a flat car derailed in the yard and tore up some old ties on a switch. They started by getting some wood beams and jacks, then we stuck spare tie plates under the wheels as we jacked it up in increments. Eventually we got it high enough to slip back over the rail head, so we spread grease all over the rail face and the wheel. Then a mighty tug from a tractor set it back on. It took most of an afternoon.

Thanks for coming to work today! The railroad I worked for had a couple ISCO cranes that look very similar to the one you have except they had no operator's cab, just a seat out in the open...it never rains in Oregon, right? They worked pretty well picking up derailed cars but were real slow and a pain to drive on the highway. REminds me os a story: The roundhouse wanted to swap truck between a pair of SD9s. The one with the good trucks had a bent frame and was going to be scrapped (darn it!). The recipient was the SD7 that we used to switch our yard, best locomotive in the fleet but worn out wheels. They had to bring in big cranes to do the job but it got done - and I got photos. Another day on the railroad!

A small volunteer organization I used to be a part of has 2 locomotives of the same type from the same previous owner, very similar to the 50 tonners. They were three-foot gauge 55 tonners. One piece cast frames with heavy ballasting, one piece cast truck frames on a center bolster with chain drive, twin Cummins engines. Only one of them runs, #45. the other is #39 and actually has Remote Control equipment installed on it. Good thing too, I've been told when it came to its current home the cab was mashed in on the engineer's side from heat. The #45 is quite a beast, but she's in bad shape. She once set fire to the ties due to her F end traction motor losing a bearing and overheating. One of our guys, Glenn, was a 6' some-odd-inch tall behemoth who gunned it out there with a fire extinguisher, but the fire put itself out by the time he got there. Thank goodness! Now it only runs on the R end engine, but it has water leaks and needs a rebuild. With only one other operable locomotive available for power and all income from ticket sales and donations though, it's a big dilemma and she continues to be run into the ground. Almost literally, sometimes. she likes to straighten out the curves! Have you guessed the previous owner yet? Think J.P. Morgan... U.S. Steel. Welp, that's one of my railroad stories. Maybe some time I'll share more!

Great look at the "Day Job" you and Graham have when you're not being Weekend Titans of the Rails on the ETR! I don't have any hands-on RR stories, only what a 5-8 yr. old boy in the early '60's can see from sitting on the clothes hamper looking out the back window of his bedroom staring at the Wilsmere yard on the B&O. Baldwin Sharknose's blowing through with coal trains, Baldwin switchers, with their arched steel cab roofs, classifying all day and night. The unique 'Circus top" boxcars of the B&O still present at that time were fun to spot when they stopped in town. Lastly, there was the occasional passenger train throttling through on the way to their deaths ....

Near me sits a SD35 ex southern railway high hood, sold to a mine around late 1980s-1990s repainted in a green and yellow scheme never upgraded to current FRA requirements of having ditchlights ran for years shuttling cars at the tipple/preparation plant. Sadly for about 10+ years it’s sat on the loading track as the whole plant went idle, hopefully one day it’ll see life again pulling cuts of cars to the loadout there has been talks for years of reopening the plant but to no avail, maybe someone can the old SD35 and give it a new home and it doesn’t see the scrappers torch. Especially since I believe it to be one of the only SD35 high hoods still in existence that isn’t being sheltered on a museum lot. If I ever have the money you can bet I’ll offer to buy it, even if it won’t ever see rail again, I’ll put it on a display track and paint it back into its Southern tuxedo

I cut my teeth on a shortline railroad in Florida that mainly had all CF7s, and more than a dozen of them! One nice thing about having all the same engines was once you knew how to fix one you could fix em all. It was a sad day in 2009 when a buddy of mine who still worked for them sent me a picture of just the cab of one engine sitting on the ground at the scrap yard, followed by a note saying "last one to be scrapped!" Now they still have 2 CF7s left I believe, but their fleet has been pared down considerably and replaced with some newer equipment. But I remember how neat it was to hear the back story of those engines and how Santa Fe gave them a new life with the rebuild project in Cleburne TX. And then another revival on the shortlines in the 80s and 90s. Sad to see them go the way that they did, but nothing truly lasts forever. The cost of maintenance on something that old is not a burden many railroads can withstand.

Man or machine there's a date we're born or roll off the assembly line floor and a date we're either hauled off on a tow truck or a flatbed or a long black Cadillac. Trick is making the best of what's between those two dates in the machine's case doing useful services, in our case love those around us,put in an honest day's work for an honest day's pay and live that life in a way there's overflow parking on the side streets around the funeral parlor. Definitely looked like CLOW did well and had the battle scars to prove it. Highway Through Hell is some awesome TV. If you like that search KZread for the first towing/heavy recovery reality show called Wrecked. It aired on cable about 12 or so years ago for 2 seasons following O'Hare Towing here in the Chicago area.

I don't eat any fast or Chinese food; all bad for the digestive tract. You do a nice job keeping your equipment in good serviceable condition. For switch machines I would check with some of the railroads that have abandoned lines. They might sell you some. Try NJ Transit.

Probably the side rod but only if you keep up with the maintenance. If you don't keep up with the grease the bushings ware out, then the pins. then dollars flow the wrong direction. The chain is cheaper and easier to replace than the pins in the counter weights, but not the sprockets! to replace the sprockets is a huge job.
