I have no idea what octopus guard is but I think ive been doing it since blue belt back in 2012. That fan sweep in an interesting idea.

Is the lockdown effective for shorter players on taller opponents? What adjustments does one have to make to compensate?

Lockdown CAN be effective for a shorter player on a taller player. But instead of trying to “stretch” the tall person out, try to “lift” using the “lotus lockdown” variation.
