Besides the fact that you never stop learning english once you have started. So even if you have a good english proficiency, you'll keep mastering it as long as you use it (which in most cases means for ever). I want to prepare for taking the toelf or ielts test and get a c1 (I currently have a B2 level) but Im also into italian and french, so I will try to do something similar to what you did and see what the outcome is in one year from now.

I was casually studying Italian on and off for a year when I started learning Spanish. I can learn them both simultaneously with no problem, learning Spanish has also helped with my Italian tbh.

This is SUCH an interesting topic! I’m just getting where I can handle French and Spanish simultaneously - and now I’m feeling the temptation to start another... 😂

You’ve said it 👏. French helped me when I started Italian . At an advanced level, I moved on and learned German. I think the locals should appreciate that we speak their language, even though not perfectly. And not pointing at the errors we made.

I'm currently learning both Italian and Spanish in which I started learning "la bella lingua" for 5 years now. I have to say that it is one of the reasons why I like foreign languages. I use Italian a lot to learn Spanish but there has been times where I start a sense in Italiano and end with Spanish. Ciao, ciao🇫🇷🇮🇹

This is so relatable lol. The struggle is real! I’m going to school now to become a Spanish and Italian teacher and I get confused all the time lol, but I feel like that is all part of the fun! It is better that I learned Spanish first though because it really helps me with my Italian. Great video!

You're right. When you master one language the other will come easily. I have a high level of Italian and now I'm studying Spanish. Italian is incredible and it helps me a lot. When you master one romance language you'll be able to understand other romance languages without much effort. It's a very magnificent experience and I recommended it to everyone

Sandra, my situation is the opposite of yours. I've studied Spanish for 4+ years and have recently started with Italian. No doubt my level of comprehension is higher due to my spanish but I do worry about confusing the 2 languages. What has been your experience since your post?

This video, like all of yours, is very useful and so true. I talked in my Bachelor's thesis about the phenomenon of making mistakes while learning a language and those mistakes are part of the learning, so they haven't to be banned but encouraged, because they are part of rhe process and it's more important to try speaking the language than reaching the "perfection".

The worst are not words but prepositions, articles and reflex verbs. The funny word all this languages say slightly different is to drive (guidare, manejar, conduire, dirigir)

Platon I absolutely hate prepositions. That is my biggest problem with Italian. The prepositions always mess me up.

I'm learning both: English and Italian watching you:) I think that your methods of learning Italian are very useful and the way you speak English helps me to improve it (English). Polish is one of the most difficult languages, people say it's more complicated than Chinese. It's very interesing for me when you explain English users Italian grammar, because it's much more complicated than English grammar but 20 times easier than Polish grammar. Good job:)

Tom, I enjoyed your video. I teach French and Italian. I learned and mastered French first, then learned Italian. Like you, I used my first foreign language (French) to learn my second one (Italian). Great videos!

do you think learning both at the same time from scratch could be confusing? Are they very similar?

I started learning French in high school and just ran with it and have been practicing it for about 10 yrs now. I guess you could say I’m fluent in French now probably as much as you are in italian. I’m going to Rome this summer and really want to learn Italian. Im glad I stumbled on your videos. Cool to know another American who’s going thru the same language struggles. Just subscribed.

I’m learning Spanish now that my level in French is very high.

It's just like u said, my first language is Spanish and it helps me when it comes to conjugation of verbs, but since they are so similar yet different, it sort of complicates it more because it like relearning your language but changing the words slightly, so u reach to a point where u don't know when to change it and when not to.

I mean at the basic level, sure, it may even help solidify grammatical concepts that are sometimes glossed over in anglophone countries (for example here in Canada, we have zero grammar instruction because it's not deemed worthwhile to instruct children on their native tongues' grammar.) But I think it's extremely hard to learn to SPEAK more than one language at the same time unless they're rather distant in terms of their structure. I can only speak anecdotally, but I've formally studied Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. At a certain point I stopped focusing on trying to speak Portuguese and Spanish and only focused on the grammar, while maintaining my diligence in spoken Italian. After a few months, I became conversationally fluent in Italian and am only now starting to open myself back up to speaking Spanish with incredible difficulty. I can make myself understood, but I'm constantly using Italian pronunciation, or leaning on safe phrases (Non lo so instead of No lo se, magari/forse instead of talvez, etc.) I have zero difficulty in understanding, so if you only want to be able to enjoy more than one language, go right ahead. But if you're not 100% concrete in your ability to speak one language I think it best to focus speaking only one while you study a few more on the side (given that they're connected.) I have no problem writing to my friends in spanish or portuguese but speaking is a totally different matter. TLDR: You can STUDY (in textbooks, online, etc.) more than one closely related language to great benefit, but to learn to speak more than one language is not recommended. To study Portuguese/French/Spanish/Italian at the same time will reap benefits, to the point where you can text to your friends in those languages without difficulty, but one should choose a single language to specialize in speaking before learning another. C1 is the level I'd recommend before even considering trying to train for another language.

Hi, I just stumbled upon your video...I started studying Spanish around 4 years ago and have a high-intermediate level. At the beginning of this year, I started an Italian course (a language I had briefly studied 25 years ago) and am amazed at how much I can comprehend based on my spanish knowledge (both grammar and vocabulary). Of course producing Italian is another matter. I've been concerned about confusing the 2 languages and it has happened (cucina / cocina is a recent goof). But I'm hopeful based on your French/Italian experience that I can learn more Italian without sacrificing my Spanish. Thanks!

I've been learning Spanish and have a decent grasp on it but decided to at the same time pick up french and Italian and have been having trouble with the Italian side of thing. This has been instrumental for me in deciding to just focus on French and Spanish as it seem like learning Spanish and French first then Italian might be easier for me. Merci!

Facts. 4 years of learning Spanish, then went pretty hard on the Duolingo french, then switched back to Spanish. When I realized these things it was the simple Tu when I was speaking Spanish my brain would be like (are you speaking french right now?) and just shut off my brain

Interesting video! I grew up bilingual (English and Spanish) so learning Italian allowed me to make connections. Now that I am at a decent level (depends the context 😒) I am looking into studying Brazilian Portuguese this year 😄 I just wanted to get to a good level of Italian first so I wouldn't confuse the languages.

I am learning Arabic, Serbian and German at the same time having already mastered 3 other languages. The trick is to have resources readily available to study each everyday and review the others as time permits during the week.

Tom, i often see comments from Italians that your Italian is now so good, you sound like a native.. ( complimenti!) can you tell me if you spent a lot of time in Italy to achieve this or if you managed to get to this level from the States using videos, music, etc.

Italian is very similar to my mother tongue french, but I want to learn it seriously. As you can read, I also speak english (I work in english). I also learned german at school, so english + a bit of german helps me to learn swedish. J'ai aussi appris le russe au lycée, mais je n'ai jamais vraiment pu le pratiquer. I'm learning french at school for like 4 years. I'm not really good cause i dont study at home but i so wanted to speak italian so we tried with my mom at home with some books and sometimes we visited our family that speaks italian fluently. But then i forgot some french and i got really confused. So i stopped italian and i'm trying to learn french perfectly that i can start Italian again.

I study English and Spanish 15min/day (Advanced level), Turkish - 1h listening to dialogues and 30min watching Turkish TV or travel vlogs without active learning (Pre-intermediate), Spoken Persian - 15-30min (zero level). There is no problem, just time-management. Btw, I used to speak French and Italian, I even lived in Rome, I can fully understand you 😊 "il conto o el cuento o la cuenta?" Como o come o como come?

I started learning french first but then I wanted to learn Italian so I began studying Italian more than french. I haven’t been having much trouble yet and I’m doing well😂👍🏼

@@lelandknutson2308 honestly, it’s up to you. I’m doing it for fun, so I’m not too strict on what I’m doing. I study Italian more because I’m more interested in it, but every once and a while I go over French. Personally, they’re both fairly equal in difficulty for me, but Italian is slightly easier because of pronunciation. I say have fun and do whatever you feel like doing! :)❤️

Since English is foreign language for me, it is good for me to learn Italian with English explanation. I'm learning English and Italian at the same time thanks to you. 😊 And you speak a bit fast, but it is not that hard for me to understand. Your English pronunciation is clear and the accent is great! Actually having broken on my English language for around 10 years and after a some time I realised I need to start a new language and after 9 months of studying Russian I got into spanish! Iranian spanish Russian English!😅😭

Me, me also confuse French and Italian when I suddenly switch languages. Me never confuse them with Chinese and English coz their different. I can easily switch among French, Chinese, and English(it happens when I need to translate for people speaking these 3 languages together); but not french and Italian, no!

I'll recommend to learn Italian first since the pronunciation is easier.

I learned Italian and German

I know a little Spanish and a little French (I have way back French relatives). I have to really think hard when switching from one to the other! Not a master in either one 😂

You can’t go wrong with either one first as they’re very similar. Go with the one you think you are most drawn to first!

I think French is more similar to Italian than Spanish, I speak both French and Spanish and while studying Italian I would often notice how similar French and Italian words are

I don't know French, but from what I can hear, the pronunciation between Italian and Spanish is almost the same. Perhaps the grammar will be more similar, but I don't know. I speak Spanish and Italian I speak fairly well. Another thing I may add... Spanish from Spain sounds more similar to Italian in the phrases they use (must be a European thing) compared to my Spanish from Mexico. I notice this when I watch Spaniard shows.

I'm Italian, I can speak and write French, Spanish and English but I can tell that Italian people feel more comfortable with Spanish, even if they've never studied it, as most words sound the same,especially in the south.

I am studying Japanese and German at the same time at this moment, can I study Italian with them ?

If you want to then sure.

I don't think so, it's really hard to learn two different languages like Arabic and Russian or even Turkish and Arabic ( u can find more than 550 Arabic words or maybe more in Turkish language) But with (Italian, french, english, Spanish) as I think yes u can

I consider it's easier to study two languages from different language families because there is almost no confusion in the early stages of your learning process. Nonetheless, it will take up more of your time. I'm currently learning Russian and German at the same time, and the only challenge I'm finding difficult to overcome is the lack of time for both.

You should learn Portuguese. I strongly believe you'd do pretty well.
