If you want to know how durable granite is, go to an old cemetery. You can barely read what's carved into 200+ year old marble headstones, but the granite ones look like they were installed yesterday. It's an amazingly resilient and beautiful material.

Smiling. 1) I have plantation shutters in every room. I love them, easy to clean and maintain. With shutters we can angle the light exactly where we want to aim it. 2) I have a William Morris floral wallpaper. 3) scallops on our velvet couches. 4) I have gorgeous granite counters and backsplash. Agreed! While I love marble, it just isn't practical for my family. I redid my kitchen last year and went with granite over artificial stone based on what the stone yard professionals recommended. Although it was cheaper than quartz, they still steered me toward it because it is REAL STONE. Trends come and go, but the classics are timeless.

Shutters are elegant, but so expensive. I’m a real estate agent, and on Cape Cod, and in Florida we put the 2 inch slotted blinds in our windows. They were fraction of the cost, and they accomplish the same thing by allowing us to control the light inside and the view outside. And unlike shutters, you can pull them up and retract them completely if you want so it’s never darker than you intend.

I had my granite counter tops installed in 2008. Durability is not an issue as long as you use a cutting board. Tomato and lemon will ruin the finish, and cause stains. Also, steer clear of using bleach or ammonia base cleaning products or gritty cleaning products. I chose a contrast color of dark, dark green counter tops to my maple cabinetry. It’s a personal choice, you do you.

Laminate! I am old enough to remember when no one had stone countertops, except for the very wealthy. When granite started being touted for the masses, the appeal was that it was bulletproof and you would never have to replace your counters again. Well, guess what? The masses discovered trends and found that they quickly tired of their granite choices. Or, they bought a pre-owned house and found they could not decorate around the previous owner’s unfortunate granite choices. Anyway, huge, heavy, irreplaceable slabs of stone (they take millions of years for the Earth to manufacture) were broken up and replaced with other huge, heavy, irreplaceable slabs of stone. Most were sourced from quarries not even on this continent. Laminate is now practically bulletproof. It is manufactured of pressboard (ie:tree scraps), paper, photographic or printed images, and a coating. The coating may be made with hydrocarbons, but they also may be made with plant-based finishes. None of this is necessarily shipped from far away. The sheets of laminate now come as long as 12 feet, without repetition of pattern. Edges can be as varied as with stone. Colors are infinite. Changes are easy and do not involve destroying any cabinetry. As for heat resistance, you can take a section of your hated granite or marble to a stone shop and have them make as many stone trivets as you like. (Does anybody really put hot pots on their stone countertops anyway? Doesn’t that involve the risk of cracking?). Or take a few porcelain tiles from your new flooring choice out to the garage and grind the edges smooth and use contact cement to add a cork bottom - cheap, matching trivets!

You are so right on picking stones! Our builder wanted us to pick our countertops from tiny stones at the design center. I made a big deal about being a rock collector and needing to see them in person. So grateful I did because the stone I thought I’d like was so splotchy! We ended up falling in love with this White Wave Granite outside of the builder selections. It had been sitting there collecting dust for two years because everyone who upgrades chooses quartz. Glad I’m trendy again! 😏

I decided to leave my red oak floors throughout my house even though white oak is the new trend. It was the environmentally friendly decision and was easy on the budget. Love your videos.

Our previous home we used Cambria quartz but on our current house remodel project I decided to use leathered Black Pearl granite. It was so much cheaper and suits our rustic cabin. Slabs of Cambria in my area were about $3200 and the black granite was about $900. It’s also more durable than quartz.

About 20 years ago, my husband and I laid about 800 square feet of wood flooring ourselves. Garrett, I had things hurting on my body that I didn't even know I owned! The planks are about 2 inches wide. If I had to do it over, I'd pick 12 inch planks if they make them!!

We love our shutters. Have had most of ours for 19 years. When when added the additional windows beyond the front of house, we purchased Bella View composite ones from American Blinds. They frequently have 50% off or bogo sales. You cannot beat the pricing and the quality is outstanding! Super easy to hang yourself.

Hi Garrett, I enjoy watching many decor videos on KZread and to the best of my knowledge, you were the first designer to call the return of traditional decor. I am an antiques dealer who also loves a modern mix so this is great news to me. I’m not a huge fan of MCM, however, my biggest concern with it is quality and the decade long trend of it dominating the antique world that absolutely must remain diverse in era and style. BTW…You are just adorable and I love your energy!

We did a whole kitchen remodel in 2021 and went with granite. It's so durable and we love it! It used to have 4 inch white tiles that his parents put in in the early 90's. The grout line was huge and white!!! We couldn't get rid of it fast enough!

We renovated Our Home in 2021 and chose 5 inch engineered hardwood floors in red oak carmel character brushed by Mirage Floors, they are a caramel color and are absolutely Gorgeous. We also picked Bianco Antico Granite from the Stone yard for our kitchen with New cream colored traditional style cabinets. We Love everything we chose. I love the all white, shaker style, quartz countertops look but I knew that I wouldn’t be happy in the long term with that choice so I chose what My heart desired..❤

In Australia we put in a thick victorian ash wood bench top that contrasts with our baltic pine floor boards and cream cabinets. Yes it needs some care but 20 years later it still looks amazing. Noone ever talks about hard wood benches...maybe its a down under thing in period homes here?

I have granite in my 12 year old kitchen…..we picked the slab and I still love it! I’m not a cool color person so this cream and shades of soft brown stone appeals to me. It’s a soft pattern. I did do a traditional Calcutta-like quartz in the master bath in 2020 but I did a honed finish and I love that too! So glad I didn’t do polished though…..

I inherited the house my great-grandfather built in the early 60’s. It has wood shutters and granite countertops and I was in despair over having to replace the wall to wall carpeting in there, till my mother recalled that the house when built had lovely thin plank hardwood floors. A little investigation (family photos) showed it was still there and thanks to the careful care it had received up until being covered it was still in great condition. They had covered the floors when my grandfather started slipping on the slick floors and/or scatter rugs. Around the late 70’s she thought. A quick clean and basic refinish/polish and they’ve looked perfect ever since. So glad to see these “old” styles coming back.

I love the narrow width wood flooring! Our house has granite countertops, so glad to hear it is coming back in. What I don't like is the cherry-wood cabinets and I'd like to paint them a light gray to brighten and modernize things.

No no no! I dream of having cherry wood cabinets! Don’t paint! They will chip on the corners and also where your fingernails hit to open them. My MIL had her dark brown cabinets painted white by a professional company. Looked nice for about 6 months. She said it was the worst decision. They also got less for their house when they sold it because they looked so bad.

Good Morning Garrett, For sure very interesting episode of trends🙃, thank you!! Especially the shutters coming back. I find it personally a whole lot of job when it comes to cleaning, not that ever I had but my in laws and few other relatives had it and it’s insane to clean it and eventually neglected for a long time. I always liked a good wall paper. Haven’t ever tried but may be some time in the future might give it a go, right room and right time and right pricing:) Quite excited to hear about your dream home😍will wait!! Thank you for asking inputs for your vlogs. Happy to see and know how you spend your days and weekends, how do you deal with tough days and tough clients.
