I've had white laminate counters in my kitchen for 37 years. Raised 5 kids in it. There NOTHING that has stained it that I haven't been able to remove easily. The counters still look new believe it or not. My daughter had granite countertops put in. Within a week a rust stain appeared after accidentally leaving an iron skillet on it. She's still trying to get it out. I may not be able to afford the new line of solid of countertops, but I'm glad mine still look new and presentable!

Our old formica countertops in our old house are still in premium condition, the only chip is where the cabinet guy was resealing my wood dropped his screw gun taking cabinet doors off. Ours is 25 years old in May.

I wonder if she could use iron out? I've also gotten rid of stains with a mix of barkeepers friend and peroxide. Make a paste, cover with wax or parchment paper and leave overnight.

Absolutely!!!!! Wears forever if one takes care not to use the incorrect to it ... looks great . When it came in 60s it was THE THING.

I'd love a formal dining room video. I've had one in every home I've purchased. Though not wealthy, growing up in the '60s my mother served dinner in the dining room with a damask tablecloth and napkins most evenings. I remember as a young child, my mother saying her children "could be invited to dinner at the White House and not embarrass themselves" and I'm grateful for it. I'm working on bringing back formal dinner parties in our circle of friends.

Love a formal dining room! I like it when they are not in an open floor plan! I think a dining room makes all the holidays special!

I have a red brick fireplace and honey oak in the kitchen 😭 We’ve already put a lot of money in upgrading this house but it really is like polishing a turd. However, at least I have a house to complain about and decorate!

We use our formal dining room for special meals, but even more so for playing games, doing homework when the kids were little, and working on projects that a big table will make easier. It gets used often!

You are one of the few interior designer KZreadrs that sounds like they actually have clients. You do such a great job with balancing function, form, and reality. No one should be made to feel bad about what they have to work with. I think so many people are pushed into choices that are unnecessary. I had laminate countertops in an apartment when I was younger. Although they were lovely, they fell apart really quickly (roommates 🙄). My next apartment had tile, and I was so grateful. Anything can work and look beautiful depending on the context and care.

We have golden oak cabinets, trim, and floors in our home that was built in 1991. We painted our walls a green that is very similar to the shade you suggested. It looks so lovely! We also 'downsized' our formal dining room. It was directly off the kitchen, so we broke it in half and turned the half just off the kitchen into a walk-in pantry. It is much more functional than a large formal dining room we hardly used. We still have a dining room, but it is smaller and fits our lifestyle better. But my walk-in pantry! I LOVE it!

What a great way to utilize space. I can’t stand unused rooms in homes. It makes no sense to me. My parents had two untouched rooms they never used and it struck me as odd. Their Formal dining and living rooms were urban deserts! 🤦‍♀️

I am so glad I stuck to my guns when everyone told me to put up the glass tile backsplash. No ma'am, not in my house. ✋️

I’m always gonna have a formal dining room because it’s just something you do!! Maybe it’s my age…54! I like having a pretty room for the occasional family dinner.

I don't think formica/laminate countertops will ever really go away. We have rental properties, and formica is better in so many ways than any other countertop surface: light-weight, easy to install and replace when necessary, much less costly to buy and install, durable, and available in a great variety of colors and patterns to match any decor that you choose.

Love, love my formal dining room. At least twice a week I bring out the china, waterford glasses, sterling silver, etc. and make a beautiful meal, and park my self there and act/know I am at my special luxurious restaurant and enjoy myself ... my dining room. In addition I also have Sunday Dinner at 2:00 pm and do likewise. If someone show up they are welcome, otherwise I could care less. These are the traditions I took from my very very small family (primary and no extended) that brings great joy as I celebrate myself, and use the items I purchased over the years. Also whether I am alone/not I make sure I celebrate every special holiday...

I was told by an interior designer 20 years ago to feel free to do whatever I had to do to “utilize” every square foot of my home; to make every square foot be working for me and to not be a pass-through to just dust and vacuum. That advice freed me up to convert a guest bedroom into a home office that I needed more than the guest bedroom. It was liberating for me! Love your advice, Garrett, and your adorable personality! Well, I am poor. But I did update my house. I decided that with my budget and the neighborhood I lived in, laminate countertops were the way to go. No, they're not luxurious. But I could not justify the thousands of dollars it was gonna cost to do any other kind of countertop. Maybe tile countertops would've been cheaper but I draw the line at those completely. So that's just the way it goes sometimes. Champagne taste in beer budget.

Absolutely! Do the best you can within your budget. Remodeling a kitchen with laminate countertops isn't a bad option. New and functional is better than old, ugly, and not serviceable. Honey oak cabinetry is usually solid wood (not veneered), and the varnish is often what causes the yellow tint. It's great to keep a better quality product vs. replacing it with cheaper, less durable material, unless you have tons of money to remodel many times. Wood can be refinished or painted. Underneath is still the same quality product.

I use my dining room as a dining room. I guess I am a little old school there. I do have an eat in kitchen but find I get better use out of a rolling cart/island so have one of them instead. I have read that the younger generation does not want a lot of the formal stuff but I keep hope in the idea that my grandchildren may like all things old again. Only time will tell.

I think the desire for advice on trailer and mobile homes is because the layout and space are very specific and difficult to deal with. Your videos on small spaces are a good place to start, they're very helpful.

That can be true. However, most ideas can just be done to scale. We can take inspiration from larger homes and often scale them to smaller homes.

Thanks so much! When you are ready I’m glad to give you my opinions virtually. I understand your frustration. That’s why I always say interior design is so much more than picking out pretty things or commenting about styles. There is allot of science to it that you actually learn by getting a degree in interior design or at least working for a substantial amount of time under a formally educated interior designer. Also, I did a video on how to decorate difficult spaces and a couple on layouts in a home that should be on our channel page which might be of some assistance to you.

Yep, love my formal dining room. Holidays are celebrated here, and it gives me a chance to make my family feel special. My children have been grateful that they learned how to eat at a more formally set table. As adults they haven't felt lost if faced with formal eating situations, as some friends have.

Yay I have a formal dining room and living room but my house is built in 1920’s never getting rid of those rooms. Yay I have the Georgian brick on my fireplace.

I have laminate countertops that we have had for 20 years and they are in perfect condition. Luckily we picked out a neutral color that still looks great and I would totally get it again because of the cost 😊

If someone offered me new countertops, I would go with butcher block for my cottage aesthetic. I considered painting my oak kitchen cabinets green a few years ago. I'm glad I did not do it. For me, bringing in a variety of decor objects in different wood tones breaks it up. My kitchen wall color is a muted sage green, great neutral. Upgrading cabinet hardware, faucet and lighting was the best budget friendly option for me.

Wood, like tile, is a giant petri dish of a countertop. Grout and cellulose are porous and have teeny spaces for rotting grease and bacteria to set up housekeeping and wait to give you food poisoning. Formica replaced wood because of basic cleanliness concerns. Kitchens are for food prep first, not aesthetic expression, so why don’t you start at safety not risk. Lotta stone has the same issues. You don’t know people who died of food poisoning because of Formica. Why go back to the 19th century?

We installed a dark, smokey blue, glass backsplash in a subway pattern in our kitchen so that the light reflection of the glass would counter the dark colour, which we really wanted. The glass tiles we chose had a backing (which was the dark, smokey blue colour) to stop that transparency. The opaque backing really stopped the see through problems older versions of glass tile had.

We have an early 90s honey oak home. I didn't want to paint all of the staircase millwork and the baseboard trim in our east-facing foyer. I painted the walls black and the woodwork pops. It looks fresh & not dated now 😄

Mirror for a backsplash in the kitchen? Never!

I too have laminate countertops been there for over 20 years…. No scratches chips or stains…. It is a granite print…. And grey and black of course….i almost covered with a concrete look resin from a local vendor but the cost outweighed the benefit….it was a custom fit so it would have looked great…. But it was half the cost of a full kitchen renovation….like you say…. Work with what you have…. Thanks for sharing ❤

Loved this look back and forward. The one that has always frustrated me is my love of bisque appliances. Just had to replace a dishwasher and had only 2 options. I lived through a childhood of avocado and harvest gold, so little did I know off white (not the old almond) would be so passe so fast. It just works so well with my favorite colors...more so than white, black or stainless. Where, in the trend to warmer neutrals, is bisque? As you said, you do what you love. Just wish the rest of the world would catch up so there are more options.

In the Uk most of these things haven't really gone away, you don't see so many warm wood kitchens or glass tiles but laminate countertops are pretty normal and brick fireplaces aren't uncommon.Formal dining rooms tend to become multi purpose but still capable of being used for entertaining.Apropo of nothing I have rather a liking for the chunky, old glass block room dividers , esp in 60s build homes. Not big atm but I expect they will come back in again at some point.

I LOVE a formal dining room! I have formal set, including a china cabinet with my Mom's china displayed as well as crystal stemware. We eat in there all the time. There is something very timeless and comforting about sitting down to dinner with family and friends with table linens and the table set properly, whether it's set with my everyday dishes, or for the holidays or a celebration using the china and crystal. There seems to be no sense of urgency to bolt your food down and rush on to something else, and we often continue to sit and talk long after the meal is done and cleared away. I have lived in a house where there was no designated separate room space, where I could see the kitchen and it's messy from cooking the meal. It takes away from the moment for me (I hate a messy kitchen, it makes me bat s**t crazy), and all I want to do is hurry up and eat so I can get the kitchen cleaned up and pretty.

Laminate is a very good choice ..it wares, like iron IF one doesn't do the things one shouldn't do to it. In the 60s Laminate was The THing ! ALL upscale homes sported . Great for price point .

I love traditional spaces. But, I am chronically ill and unable to clean and maintain them. So I do minimal and donated my fine China and China cabinet and many other pieces that weren't being used. Love you Garrett. Miss Albert.

It would be cool to see the initial reactions an interior designer has when entering a beautifully designed space versus one that needs a lot of help. Explaining how the eye moves through the space, how contrast is used or could be improved, what jars the mind because something is off, etc. Even the effects of everyday clutter on people’s mood by examples like just editing a space for us to see. Even the use of photos and how & why they can help people see their space with a critical eye.

Interior designers who are actually formally educated in the subject or at least have trained under a trained interior designer rarely are phased by what they see. We see allot of good and bad. It’s the job of an interior designer or decorator to help people achieve the results that makes them happy in their home. It’s the untrained that can be judgey or push what they think in their lay opinions a space has to look like. We have fun on this channel, but if you regularly watch my videos you know I’m all about acceptance and producing content to help or inspire people to have spaces created that serve them functionally and aesthetically.

My first piece of "grown up"'furniture was a solid mahogany sideboard/buffet with felt inlays - very Georgian - that I purchased at an estate sale. I wanted it for my formal dining room that I wanted in my first home and I was still in college and not a homeowner yet!!! I do love oak if done right and I love a formal dining room so yes - a video please. I'm not a fan of small glass tile as I feel it's as outdated as a Tuscany style kitchen. It should be left in the past. Excellent job Garrett and would love to see more!!! 🦩☀️🌴☺️😊❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰

If I were able to choose my kitchen, I would have butcher block, but I'm poor, so my Formica counters are nearly 40 years old, and they look like they were installed yesterday! So old, the style come back around, too. LOL

Garrett, I have honey oak cabinets. I am thinking about painting those cabinets a very pale off white by professional cabinet painters. I want to open up and lighten my kitchen. I will modernize the drawer pulls.

Dining room ideas, yes please

I love having a formal dining roommmm. it has a nice big fireplace in it. so maybe I use it for quilting more than dining, but it cleans up nice for parties and dinners. I have 3 fireplaces in my house and I admit I painted the ugly brownish red 70's brick fireplace in my living room. I have preserved all of the older aged brick fireplace surrounds though.

My mom's kitchen has pale yellow, linen pattern Formica that looks stunning even though it was installed in the 50s (maybe even before). Believe me, it has gotten heavy use but still looks new. One thing they did then but not now is that the seams at the front edge and the back (the backsplash is the same material, all the way to the cabinets or window) were not left open. Instead there is a very narrow band of aluminum or chrome or whatever so you don't see raw edges.

I couldn’t afford any of the stone countertops! lol So I waited and watched for butcher block to go on sale and got them for $99 each for two eight foot pieces! I really love them and still (two years later) get lots of compliments on how beautiful they are! Don’t regret my choice! :) Love how you advise us on great choices that are good for the planet and not just tell us to always go grab whatever is the newest trend and creating more waste! You’re the best!

Mobile homes are different to design because there are vents in the floor, windows that are odd sizes, baseboards that are different, odd angles, doors that are narrow but much taller than a standard door. I have had both a house and a mobile home. The mobile is much more difficult to decorate and make them look less "cheap and temporary". I would love videos or at least one video on mobile homes.

My sweetheart has golden oak cabinets he didn’t want to paint- We painted the walls a soft blue-gray, added black granite counters and a very interesting white granite island top with blue-gray streaks and a white sideboard and some other white decor. Also a big bow window in the eating area to draw the eye. Looks great

When we started building our first home, moved in Mother's day 1999, I had to put formica countertops. It was what was affordable (this was a tight budget house). Anyways my cabinet guy said I can give you a maple wood edge to match the cabinets at no extra cost. This truly elevated the kitchen, I also chose a beige speckled color Neutral. Popular color was hunter green and cobalt blue, I said no I won't be able to afford a change of countertops when I'm sick of the color. If you must use formica and have the opportunity to change the edge I urge people to do so. In our new home I used granite and dolomite in the kitchen, granite in one bathroom the other baths we used quartz in my laundry formica because of the cost. I don't love oak, still glad I ordered maple in my old home. Thank you so much for the formal dining room topic, I love mine and whether I use it or not I have no regrets adding it to my new home. I also liked having a few defined spaces whilst still having an open floor plan. My Aunt had red brick as the backsplash on one side of her kitchen behind her range it totally looked amazing never went out of style as well as her fireplace that was a wall with a huge mantle piece of reclaimed wood from an old barn. It looked modern even 1977 as well as 2021 when she sold the house. I won't continue to comment lol my novel! I hate mirrored backsplash in kitchens... Good job Garrett!

The main thing is I’m happy to share my design experiences over the last decade and what I learned by actually getting my college degree in interior design. So whether someone is glam and fancy or not so much I think sharing what you have been trained in is a great and worthwhile to thing to do for others.

In 2005 I put in a slumped glass splashback and it was beautiful and so easy to clean as there wasn’t any grout and with the design, it was harder to see any spots. I know it never took off as a design trend but I miss it.

FORMAL DINING ROOMS FOREVER! Oh. sorry. . . but I LOVE them, and I inherited my mom’s crystal, china, and silver. If I’m spending time cooking, that’s where we’re eating. I also inherited my aunt’s circa 1978-81 built home. Both bathrooms had orange counter top-one burnt umber, and one bright Hunter ORANGE. We’ve done extensive updating, but I’m out of funding for countertops at the moment. So, the bathroom with the hunter orange is my husband’s. Mossy Oak shower curtain (with liner) hunter orange bath mat and towels. It looks really good, and it will have to do for now. (Nobody sees that bathroom except him, and he’s happy!)

I laughed so hard. I’m so glad “Georgian Brick” is still in because I’m surrounded by it inside and out. No fireplace per se, just Georgian Brick. What the hell does one do with that. 😂 BTW Hubby picked the house/man cave grrrrrrr, grrrrrrrr. 😅❤❤❤

My friends have laminate countertops that *look* like a granite. There are MANY areas that are worn off, leaving large white spots. :(

Our first home remodel was ikea, laminate, and tile floors. Our splurge was a gas oven. We “designed” and built it ourselves. Sold later into a fixer with laminate cabinets and linoleum floors. Kids were little and I was so easy to clean. Clean goes a long way. No matter the color, really good wood cabinets should never be taken out. Last thing, we finally remodeled kitchen after a leak and is fabulous. I wish I would’ve spent more on the cabinets and less in general! It’s white cabinets and I can change everything around it if I want. We bought the house because the old kitchen was so large. Anyway, I’ll move in 10 years and someone can tear it up if they want. The space itself will sell the house.

My parents had tile counter tops in the 80s. Cool but cleaning the grout was really a pain!

I love your videos and hearing your opinions on design. Personally, I would never ever use tile on countertops because I’ve had them in the past and it isn’t a level surface and the grout is not going to clean well or hold up over time. Our island is dark granite and our countertops are lighter color quartz. For me, it’s about being able to clean it, have it be a safe environment with no off-gassing. Formica used to be made of wool and other cloth and also paper, then laminated with resins. I think that’s what my mother had in our home. It was very easy to clean. Now, I think Formica is mostly made of plastic.

Hello 👋 I like glass tile backsplash but not that glass tile that first came out that everyone jumped on to me it just reminds me of digital pixels. I don’t mind a laminate countertop I grew up with them and they always held up well, I currently have a butcher block countertop that has been a nightmare around the sink , I kind of wish I went with a laminate instead until I could afford the stone. Great video 😊

A few years back I decided to paint my laminate countertops and epoxy the results. My advice to anyone who’s curious about trying this DIY is do a couple tests runs on furniture that isn’t fixed into most important room in your house - especially the epoxy part.

Also, people in my opinion please don’t do this DIY on stone countertops.

I love a formal dinning room 😌 I put a chase lounge beside my China cabinet in mine so I can just sit and look around 😌 BC where else can I go to feel rich? 🥹

Currently we have a granite look laminate countertops…unfortunately we simply do not have the budget for solid surfaces. I have seen many higher quality laminate/Formica that are beautiful. I’m partial to a honed finish. So, would so love to have quartz, but not in the cards. 🌹

I have laminate counter tops they are visually light rather than heavy stone in a tiny 8.5 x 11 kitchen in my 1932 cottage. I love the the richness of stone but the visual weight didn’t seem compatible with the house. I put the money into white bronze and crystal hardware and hand blown light fixtures. The update of the kitchen is within Historic Preservation guidelines and qualified for preservation tax credits.

I have black shiny brick on my fireplace. I'm not a fan at all but don't know how to fix it, or what to fix it. the bricks go into the fireplace so it isn't a matter of just taking it off. I really don't like honey oak yellow orange wood floors. I had the floors redone because they were honey oak and now they are white oak. I did that because it was less expense than staining but I regret it. I'd rather have had a mid-dark brown.

I actually don't mind the yellow oak cabinets or the red fireplaces in moderation. If it's a huge kitchen with nothing but the honey oak cabinets and then the honey oak floor I really don't like it and if it's one of those bright red fireplaces that makes ugly takes up a whole wall again, just a little much. But I think you can make Less dramatic versions of both of them work.

I almost put in glass tile backsplash because of the colors. But I changed my mind and went with white subway tiles. Yes, I am boring. I went with nice bright gold paint instead. I wanted to get color, but not necessarily in one of the more expensive parts of the kitchen. And again, budget. It always comes down to budget for me unfortunately.

I just bought a French window bench, now I need an 80-90 inch long mahogany dresser. What are those called? I swear everyone calls is something different. Console, buffet, credenza wtf

Good Morning Garrett, The one thing I learnt from you is “embrace it” and once you apply this in every aspect of your life, sanity is then your long life companion😇 So thank you so much Garrett for all the positivity you bring with yourself. From the time I am following you never once I felt you to be demeaning or showing off or disrespectful and the choice of words you use throughout is commendable. So much learning from you about being humane and kind and for sure the design😍 I have a big aversion to honey oak, it just looks all melancholy for me but the way you showed the mock design, amazing!! I am up anytime for formal dining table and I indulge in one. For sure a vlog on formal and semi formal dining table set up would be amazing. Australia has lot of modern houses or say new houses with mirror glass backsplash, one of the reason is most of the kitchens will be facing some part of the garden of the house. Personally I like it because it gives the feelign of that vastness but since I am living in one currently I also get the pain of the huge mirrors maintenance, literally every day post dinner😥 So yes I like it but would I want it in my next house ummmm not really but depends what I see outside and whether it keeps me entertained while cooking 🥰 You have a wonderful week ahead and see you soon…xx

Allot of people love white appliances now especially in matte in my opinion. Always is a word I very rarely use except for love for my husband, family, dogs, and unfortunately death.

I too am a Scorpio, and there’s nothing wrong with a good villain every once in a while 😊

I hava a floor lamp that looks like your table lamp. I also thought you have the floor lamp. Mine is Ralph Lauren for anyone wanting to buy one. I got mine from HomeGoods over a year ago.
