Can We Cure Lymphoma in Dogs? VLOG 74

In this video, Dr. Sue is back in the clinic checking on her patients. She is especially excited to report on her patient Pokey, who she have been treating for over 2 years.
Dr. Sue covers one of the most common questions she gets from pet owners: can you cure lymphoma in dogs?
Pokey was diagnosed over 2 years with the most common type of lymphoma that we see and was treated with CHOP chemotherapy and went into remission. She relapsed 4 months after her chemo treatment, which is actually very common in treatment.
Dr. Sue explains why she decided to keep her patient on maintenance chemo and describes treatments for her second remission.
Watch all the way through to see what Dr. Sue thinks about treatment and remission when it comes to lymphoma.
Plus there is Lucy the Great Dane with osteosarcoma and a new kitty patient named Yam with GI lymphoma.

My 9 year old beautiful cocker spaniel has just been diagnosed with anal sack cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes we are due to see an oncologist next week. We are all devastated but your uplifting podcast has given me a lot of hope and positivity. The cancer has not spread to the lungs or other vital organs so he is due for surgery and then chemotherapy which will hopefully give him more quality time. Thank you again.

Our story from Australia. We adopted our Golden retriever, Millie, aged seven and a half on the second of February 2024 from a wonderful adoption agency. We almost immediately located a small lump on her back. We took her to the vet on 14th March, and notified the adoption agency, by which time the lump had grown significantly and was looking very nasty, together with another twenty or so smaller lesions on her back and neck which were growing and fast. She was also shedding skin. The vet told us that it could be Lymphoma and we all agreed that if it was the worst case, we would not consider chemotherapy as it is too harsh on people, let alone a dog. We are told that most dogs don’t last more than two to four months after diagnosis and even chemotherapy has no certainty. I note that Dr Sue acknowledges this. Our vet operated on the following Thursday (March 21) and removed approximately half of the lesions including the largest ones. The adoption agency paid for everything. On the previous Monday (18th) we had commenced her on a course of Ivermectin which we got from our local farm produce store. This was our decision without consulting the vet. Thursday 28th March, Lymphoma was confirmed. 2nd April, sutures removed. Most of the remaining lesions had fallen off, leaving just 2. Millie had healed from the operation in an incredible manner even though she looked like a patchwork doll. Our vet was amazed, he had never heard of Ivermectin being used for cancer treatment. Follow up by the vet was on 15th April by which time the remaining lesions had fallen off. The vet just kept looking at her, shaking his head and saying he had never seen this before and that none of the dogs that he had treated for Lymphoma in the past had survived let alone thrived. 28th May and we have discovered two more small, dry patches. We are watching them closely and fully expect them to fall off. Millie is going from strength to strength. The main issue that we have now, is that we have to suffer from her selective deafness! Doubtful that Ivermectin can fix this. Her energy levels and strength have tripled. It makes us believe that she must have been pretty ill when we got her although nobody could have known. The agency only had her for three days. Everyone who knows her and her story (a lot of people, she makes friends everywhere she goes) are delighted and amazed. For the time being, we will keep her on Ivermectin. What we don't know is how long, when does she go on a maintenance dose and what the dose should be. What we used was a horse wormer in pellet form. The packet contained 140 mg of Ivermectin and was suitable to treat a 700 kg horse. Millie weighed 46 kg (very overweight, she is now down to 35.5 KG), so we gave her about 10 mg. Millie is also on a no carb diet and will remain on it, however, we have to ensure that she does not lose too much weight. Any advice would be appreciated. We are hoping that Millie’s story may help other dogs and people. The adoption agency has very recently taken in a one-year-old Golden Retriever with Lymphoma. He has been operated on and is now on Ivermectin. The same dose as Millie. We will be watching closely. Questions and comments are most welcome.

Hi Dr. Sue! I just came across your page after spending the night doing as much research as I can. My husband and I live in Raleigh, NC . Our dog Porter who is 2 years old has not been himself for the past week. We took him to our Vet and his blood work came back with what they believe is either Lymphoma or Leukemia. We’re devastated, he’s so young. He has his first oncology appointment next week to get the exact diagnosis and treatment options. We’re trying our best to stay positive. Your page gives me hope, and I appreciate all the resources you provide. Thank you for all that you do for these sweet babies💕🐾 I pray our Oncology doctor has the same optimism and insight as you!

Dr. Sue, My service dog was diagnosed with lymphoma in January. I doubt the diagnosis as it was only aspirant needle biopsy. He had diarrhea for 6 months prior. He had an ultrasound, blood work, and x rays about 2-3 weeks before diagnosis - everything was great. He had eye surgery with a resection 8 days before diagnosis. The lymphnode below the eye (in his neck) was the size of a small rubber ball. He had large lymphoblast with intermediate lymphoblasts. He had vomiting, coughing, eye discharge, and lethargy for a month. After steroids he felt great but coughing and diarrhea continues to this day. He had elspar, then vincristine, then vincristine/lomustine, then doxyrubicin (bad side effects so 4 weeks later we had treatment again) with lomustine. Planning elspar, then vincristine, then lomustine. Maybe one more cycle after that. His lymph nodes are all normal-sized. He still coughs and has trouble swallowing food. He has terrible diarheaa despite metronadozale and propectalin. He used to be a slim 95 pounds and began losing weight about 6 months before diagnosis. He went down to an emaciated 81 lbs. From January to today March 29th he gained 18 lbs (99.8 lbs) and is a little chubby due to muscle loss from steroids. We are dropping steroids to 10 mgs a day. We are ordering a PARR test on the slides to check for misdiagnosis. Also of note he has experienced eosophilia, neutrophilia (high rather than low for some reason), other high white blood cells but always low lymphocytes, and mild anemia after doxyrubicin. He is happy and active. Any suggestions?

Hi Dr. Sue! I’ve spent several thousand dollars so far on my 7 year old fur-child trying to get a diagnosis for cancer one way or another. I took her to the ER vet who said she thought she had lymphoma but couldn’t confirm because the tests didn’t conclusively say so. We have done blood work, 2 ultra sounds, and X-ray, and apiration, and finally just had an entire lymph node removed and sent off to Cornell. And every single test says there are some abnormal cells or something is up but we can’t confirm it’s cancer or if it’s something else causing the lymph nodes to behave how they are. My vet basically said last week when we got her stitches out there was no other tests to do so we will just have to wait and see if she gets sick or not... if I don’t have a “confirmed” diagnosis but 2 vets both seemed to think it’s lymphoma...how do I know if? Or when? To do chemo? :( help?

Our 10 year old beagle has tried all forms of chemo and had to stop palladia because she went Lame in her rear, including the muscles to go potty so we have had to express the bladder manually and give her Enemas to release her bowels. Immuno therapy seems to be her last shot but not a lot of information is available on the treatment.

Hi Dr. Sue - thank you so much for these great videos! My sweet boy (dog) was recently diagnosed with epitheliotropic cutaneous lymphoma. He has a growing area on his inner lip and now 4 different lesions on his body. He's an old guy with diabetes (brought on by prednisone use). Otherwise, he seems to be doing great. There is so little research/information out there on this type of lymphoma and we really do not know what to do. The 1 study out there came to the conclusion that chemotherapy was not an effective solution. Have you treated this type of lymphoma before? If so, what has seen more/less success? If nothing, what about palliative treatments? We're in Michigan. We're so lost and confused and feel the clock ticking...

Thank you for making this channel. Could you elaborate on what supplements Pokey is on for lymphoma? My 8 year old three legged dog Beethoven recently had a mass cell tumor removed in December from his left side. They did radiation to make sure they got all of it. Unfortunately, they just found another cancer mass between his front leg and shoulder during a CT Scan. He is also retaining water near his stomach and it is going into his front leg. So my oncologist thinks this cancer might be lymphoma. He got his first treatment of chemo yesterday. He also is in prednisone. Just wondering if you have any advice about supplements, diet, or anything else?

Hi Dr. Sue...so glad I came across your channel. I was looking for advice / options for my 13 year old male English Setter Tex (he's a wonder dog)...7/21/2020 diagnosed w/ Metastatic prostatic carcinoma that's spread to the lymph nodes and causing severe colonic compression. He's got a history of Stage 1 splenic hermangiosarcoma / splenectome on 11/17/21019. Currently on prednisone and antibiotics plus stool softener. He's become incontinent due to the prostate. We've been told chemo won't help much and radiation could help shrink the tumor that could take some pressure from the colon which could help him poo easier. He's still eating and drinking and goes for 3 (long-ish) walks a day. He beat the hermangiosarcoma w/ I-munnity tablets (or not maybe it just didn't spread)...any advice?

My thought on this was perspective. 1 year for my dog would be more than seven years for him. I have a breed that usually lives 10-12 years. Thus 1 year is significant for him, although insignificant for me. However, chemo is really expensive and scary. I am not good at avoiding contact with his fluids (saliva and wet nose) and for three days after chemo he is a carcingen. I hope I am not giving myself cancer.

The vet said she caught it early and felt he'd go right back into remission. He began failing each chop med one by one. Tried Tanovea as a rescue med but the diseased still progressed rapidly. His premandibular nodes began compressing his airway and the emergency vet two nights ago said euthanasia was the best option. I dont understand how this happens. How do you go from an ideal response for 12wk, then just relapse where all of a sudden nothing works anymore. He was my best friend.

My boy, my son Dorian just put to sleep because he had gastrointestinal lymphoma. Could he have been treated rather than put to sleep? What is the price range for the treatment?

Less likely to have a good prognosis with alimentary lymphoma. There are different possible costs. CHOP can be more than 8000. However, what I am doing is between $200 and $850 per month for 6 months. The cost range because sometimes my vet gives me expired or refrozen medicine. Elspar and doxyrubicine cost a lot more than lomustine and vincristine. It all depends. He also is on prednisone. Treatments are every two to three weeks depending on what we are giving. She claims he is in remission.

I cured my dogs 2x pathologically diagnosed lymphoma with Amygdalin/B17, Vit D high dose, proteolytic enzymes, medicinal mushrooms, mainly...the lymphoma/tumors started to disappear 10 days after starting this treatment and never came back.

From what I have read 5% of dogs are cured by CHOP. More dogs can be cured by a 25 grand or more stem cell bone marrow treatment with radiation.
