Brain Tumors in Dogs

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Dr. Lera talks about brain tumors in dogs with Perla, a seven-year-old female English Bulldog.
Brain tumors are generally classified as either primary or secondary. Primary brain tumors in dogs originate from the tissues of the brain or the membranes covering the brain (meninges). Secondary brain tumors are also called “metastases” as they typically originate from cells that have traveled to the brain from a tumor in another part of the body (i.e., metastasized). My wife and I rescued a sweet and lovable dog over 2 years ago. After 6 months he had his first seizure. It is a horrible thing to watch. It lasted for about a minute but what was even more heart breaking was the thirty to forty minutes it took him to recover. He walked around in a zombie like state as if he were blind. Bumping into furniture and tripping over things. The vet recommended low dose of phenobarbitol and to keep a log on when he had seizures and the duration of them. He then started having them monthly and we increased the dosage at the vets recommendation. After about a year the episodes started coming every 10 days to 2 weeks. Increasing the dosage was out of the question since it would damage the liver. A large lump formed over his left eye and he lost sight in that eye. Then one fateful night he had five seizures in one night. We contacted the vet and believe me it wasn't easy when we discussed our options with her. We loved this dog but his quality of life had fallen and he was obviously suffering. We had no other options but to put him down. It still hurts . No matter how much you may love your pet, you cannot be selfish when it comes to doing the right thing. Letting go.

My long haired dachshund was diagnosed yesterday with a brain tumor. He can't walk, has a head tilt and odd eye movements. Vet told us what to expect. He's almost 14. I just ordered a wheelchair for him. My heart is breaking. Two months ago, his brother from same litter, had a splenic tumor, we had his spleen removed and it wasn't cancer, thank goodness, he's doing well now.

I wish I could take my babygirl to the CT scan or MRI because my dog had a little seizure when she was 3 months old and now she's going to be 11 years old in March of 2023. Actually I don't have the money to get more help. I'm disabled and my husband is too. By august 31 we will be homeless because I can't get any help with rent and it's going up to 1125.00 , I only get 800.00 and he only gets 408.00.so I'm lucky that I have seizure medicine for the next 2 months. I wish I had a GoFundMe to help me.

Our 8-year old mutt rescue dog, Mandy, just had her MRI today and she has an inoperable brain tumor that originates in her brain stem tissue and goes down her neck, and actually into her spinal column. Really hoping the prednisone brings her activity up. Thanks for the scientific analysis.

Dr. Lera and crew, thank you for producing this video. We were given this exact diagnosis last week for our 13yr old pit/boxer. We were in a state of shock during the vet visit. It’s really helpful/nice to be able to come back and revisit the information in a better state of mind. The phenobarbital has taken care of the seizures and we are utilizing CBD oil to help control the extreme anxiety our dog is experiencing from her lack of ability to walk and move. We are also giving her small servings of chamomile tea (along with water of course) though out the day. I’m curious on your thoughts about this. With such a grave prognosis, controlling her anxiety/comfort is our biggest goal at this point. Your frankness on the prognosis of life expectancy, while not happy, is very much appreciated as well. I’m also glad to see you have respect for your fellow human beings/co-workers by wearing a mask during your presentation. Good science is the only way we will ever eliminate the current Covid pandemic. Thank you again for a job well done.

My 14 year old pekapoo started having real bad episodes that first thought we’re arthritis. It then progressed recently to violent jerking episodes and the dr believes he may have a brain tumor 😢. He was prescribed a palliative medicine for the seizures and so far he’s doing ok but here I am watching these videos feeling sad…

@@dannyduggan4324I am so sorry ): So far shes doing good. We went through with radiation and shes on life long medicine. We also changed her diet to keto. We will get another MRI in a few months to see how the tumor is doing. Taking it one day at a time and loving all the time we have since we have no idea how much time we have.

We changed her diet to keto as well and are giving her added supplements she needs. We will do another MRI to see what the tumor looks like. But we really are taking it one day at a time and soaking up our time with her. Im so sorry to hear about your pup. But know that you game them the best life they could have. my dog started having symptoms this week (Monday), disoriented, walking non-stop, on Wednesday she was already pressing her head against the wall and screaming, she was sedated and intubated this morning (Friday), everything happened very quickly... the doctors didn't They can do an MRI, because she has heart problems and cannot be anesthetized. It is not known exactly what is causing this, corticosteroids were started 7 hours ago. She is a 6 year old American Bully, I'm scared for her, I'm desperate.

Hi can I ask how many seizures would a dog need to have before you placed them on seizure medications? My dog has had 1 but has lost sight in one eye, she had mammory cancer 2yrs ago that we removed but new lumps have appeared so looks like it's come back. My vet wants to wait and see, it could be one off, her full blood tests were all good. Just I'm pretty scared of what other damage will be done if she has more. Do you look for a certain number? Would you still place on medication if seizures were far apart? Thank you for this video

How my vet explained to me for my senior girl (who had her first seizure in June and another this past sunday) and she potentially has a brain tumor (waiting to get in for a MRI) is that right now she isn't a good candidate for medication. She will become a candidate if 1) the seizures become more frequent like once a month or more or 2) any of her seizures are 3 mins or longer. Right now she only had 2, 3 months apart and each were under a minute.

@@BeastWrobel Thanks for sharing, the frequency wasn't explained very clearly, it was a rushed emergency appointment and I was told seizure medication wouldn't help if it's cancer tumours. I'm shocked at how much 1 seizure has affected my dog, she went from having a slight limp being the only thing wrong to confused, disorientated, vision loss and can barely get around, I have to carry her even when we go for a walk I carry her to certain quiet spots so she can do her business. Thanks again for responding, I hope your furry friend continues to stay as stable as can be, give her a hug from me

So my dog had his first seizure (at least I think it was his first) on June 16th. He had his second one on August 9th and another August 15th. The neurologist put him on anti seizure meds after the 3rd one. He’s also on prednisone. A steroid. There are many unfortunate side effects from the meds. I’m heart broken. So do I count from the first seizure to get an idea of how long he has ?
