What to Do When Your Dog has a Seizure

This video discusses how to look after a pet having a seizure. What to do when your dog has a seizure, signs to look out for that may predict a seizure, as well as care after a seizure.
Learn the causes of seizures here: • What Causes Seizures i...
My first main point of what to do when your pet is having a seizure is to watch out for your personal safety. You might be thinking that you don't really care about yourself and just want to help your pet but really there's no point in you getting bitten. If you get a nasty bite to a finger, hand or your face then you're not going to be any use to your pet.
Personal safety is key.
My next point in looking after a dog with seizures, especially epileptic dogs who have had seizures in the past, is to actually look out for the signs that your dog might be about to have a seizure.
This can be really obvious. They might start pacing or they might become really anxious or clingy. You might just notice that they do one particular activity or behavior in the build-up to having a seizure. This is known as the pre-ictal phase (before seizure phase).
If your pet is one of those who does show signs then that allows you to remove your pet from any dangerous situation. This might be crossing the road, swimming in the river or down the beach. Being near stairs which your pet could fall down. Removing your pet from the hazards before they have a seizure is far easier than moving them while they are having a seizure.
Next up is what to do when your dog has a seizure. Your dog looses consciousness, they might have lost control of their bowels, they might start thrashing around. What should you actually do to helping a seizure? Well the first step, as I suggested before, is actually to move anything away from them that they might hurt themselves on. This might be something they could bash into or something that could fall on them. Think of things like table legs and other furniture.
Don't try and move your pet unless they're in real danger. If they are in a situation where they could be subject to a big trauma like on the road or the top of some stairs, or if they are in water. Trying to move a dog or cat while they are having a seizure is difficult without injuring either yourself or your pet.
Next up is the recovery period. Depending on your pet, and depending how long the seizure was, this recovery can sometimes only take a couple of minutes or it can take several hours. Your pet might be disorientated and really tired. Thrashing around during a seizure uses a lot of energy and they're likely to get very hot. If the seizure is a long one they might be disorientated and some pets can even appear blind. They might be really staggering and appeared as though they drunk when they're walking. They might even be unable to get up.
It is generally best to leave your pet nice and quiet without stimulating them. If they're really looking for reassurance then absolutely reassure them. Often though they will want to sleep it off and it is best to leave them nice and quiet.
My last point is when should you consult your vet. Like I said at the beginning, having a seizure alone, as long as its short, is not an emergency. But there are definitely things that you should consider when it comes to calling your vet and ringing for advice

My dog had a seizure (or what can only be concluded to be seizure) I am so piss at the vet. The first one was short I was freak out and I went to a vet, which gave him some seizure meds. But for some reason when he seizure again later that night the meds didn't work. It lasted for I believe must be a hour, I was really freaked out, then I remember he stop seizure when we reached the garage. So, I brought him into the garage and into the car, he stopped in five minutes. I literally doesn't know what is going on. I was prepare to take him to the vet for a second time the next day, when my mum persistent want me to bring my dog to this other vet, since the first vet's meds didn't work, I agree. My dog did seizure 2 more times later, but they were getting better, I was getting better at waking him up from it. The first time he was in a basket, I quickly knocked the busket down and he woke from it. The second time, I squeezed his favor chew toy and he woke up from it stood up and shake around a bit. The next time I grab him into my arms and he stopped. But this 2nd vet pissed me off. I leave my dog with him and they called me saying he seizer twice and gave him some sort of medication. When I was talking to the vet, I heard my dog was crying and later said he seizer again, when I went over, I can barely recognize him. A few hours ago, he was still jumping and hoping around despite seizure (and was obviously improving.) Now, he is so sick, the vet is recommending putting him to sleep. I decided not to put him to sleep and take him home against recommendation. And sat with him in the garage. I literally can no longer tell if he is seizuring or wanting something else. I realized most of his seizer isn't seizer but behavior such as he want me to hug him, because he is so hot, he want water or something else. He is so weak right now. You literally can't tell between seizure or wanting something else. And that 3rd seizure, I am now 110% certain it was not seizering, he heard my voice and was trying to get my attention, and the people in the back assumed it was seizuring and gave him another needle. What about the other two seizering the claimed happened? Was it really seizering. This is what you get for listening to your mom!!! When I brought my dog to the other vet, when he went in, my dog was weak and fragile and can't even walk. when he left he got all his energy back and is barking at people. I already put those sezier meds they gave me away, because I can no longer tell is it a seizure or not. But I've learned other ways that work, keep him calm and cool, give him lots of water. All of it helps.

Very important to keep a log. Date, time, duration of the seizure. Get it dark and quiet. Ice pack down the spine. My female Pug has epilepsy and was diagnosed two years ago it's very treatable. She is on 2 meds plus HIGH quality CBD OIL. We know her seizures are not going to go away, so we treat it. Very good video, keep up the good work. Again this is treatable, dont give up on your baby, they are Family.

Sigh. Sorry for your loss. Our 14 year old girl started having seizures. We took her to the emergency room after the first one and her blood, kidneys etc... we're fine and they told us its more than likely due to brain tumor or other neurological diseases. They told us to just keep an eye on her and keep track of the seizures if she has anymore and if so we may need to take her to a neurologist. She had another seizure within 24 hours. So we had just considered her age and the fact that she also had a large cancerous mass growing out her leg "we couldn't get it removed because of her age" that continued to get bigger and bigger as the weeks went by. We made the hardest decision of my life to get her put down 2 weeks ago.

My Alsatian X collie had a fit just a couple of days ago on our walk. It was very scary and alarming as she had never had one before. At first she started showing signs of vomiting (that smile they get) then she went to be sick, or so it seemed, and at that point her head arked to the side, then her whole body twisted and she fell sideways onto the ground with her back legs kicking. By the time it took me to reach her side could not have been longer than 10/15 seconds by which time she had came round, stood back up and even wagged her tail at me as if nothing had happened. I was very distressed, more so than she seemed to be. Prior to the attack she had been chasing sticks for while, but I have not allowed her to run since, as much as she wants too. She is 3 months off 12 years old, and I know she has a heart murmur and takes Propalin for urinary incontinence but otherwise seems ok in herself apart from arthritis which she is given YuMove for. Honestly I thought my beloved girl was dying right there and then. She has shown no signs of any I'll effect since. She was a little lethargic after the attack, but otherwise perfectly normal and enjoyed her dinner as usual. I'm scared of it happening again, but the Vet told me the same as you, to stay calm, refrain from getting too close and remove obstacles. She also said to dim lights if possible and keep noise to a minimum. I'm praying it was just a one off, it killed me seeing her like that.

Is your dog still having seizures? My dog was having seizures and I found out it was her store bought dog food. It was giving her seizures. Go to the store and buy some chicken (it can be legs or any part), boil it and you can freeze it for the whole week. You can buy a small bag of shredded carrots. Give that to her for a week and see what happens. Also, some flea meds can cause seizures as well. But definately stay away from any store bought dog food for a whole week and see if it goes away. Try not to put in alot of salt. My dog was not Epileptic, then all of a sudden...seizures. Then I found out it was her dog food.

My dog has epileptic seizures. Thankfully only 1-3 a year However the last one was triggered by me switching her flea medicine to Advantage 2. It was the longest seizure to date and she had a few in a row with little recovery in between. I was able to pinpoint it was the medicine bcz a friend of mine mentioned how her cat had a seizure recently and has never had one before. She was going to take her to the vet and the only thing different was she changed her flea medicine to Advantage 2. I was so surprised 😮 but also relieved to know the cause. I will not be changing her flea meds again and definitely NOT going to use anything by Advantage! Every animal is different and what works for one might be harmful to another. Just another tip to keep in mind is to record medication changes and the date it was first administered. This will be helpful remembering the name of the product that is poisonous to your pet so you accidentally purchase it again. xx

I have a chihuahua mix that’s diagnosed with epilepsy. He started having seizures around 9 months of age. His episodes last several minutes. I struggle to identify when the seizure actually ends. He usually continues trembling well after it ended. I try to record the whole episode so my regular and neuro vet can see. Thankfully my regular vet happens to be a good friend of mine. She’s helped calmed me down during episodes.

@kimberly My dog started having seizures and passed away. I found out it was her store bought dog food that was causing it. Boil some chicken for the whole week, add no salt, you can give shredded carrots as well. You can even freeze portions to make it easier. Definately stay away from the store bought dog food first, then that will tell you. I've even heard of some flea meds causing seizures as well. Also getting vaccinations too close together. But please do not ignore the food. Hope this helps.

My dog had his first seizure about 4 days ago and it broke my heart to see him like that. I took the little guy to the vet and got all the exams they could made on him and he came out normal... On every single thing they tested him, cardiovascular system, diabetes and other ones I do not recall. They said it was genetic epilepsy apparently... I've written down all about that day to keep track as you recommend. I will be taking him to the vet again in a week to make sure he is actually fine and all. I took him to the emergency animal hospital that time but now we will be going with the vet. I shall ask her if there is anything I could possibly do to help him. If I need to switch up his diet, take him out for a walk more often... Anything really. My dog means a lot to me and I am willing to go to any measure just to see him healthy & happy. :)

I have a beautiful 7-pound baby Yorkie. She just had her second seizure. The first time she went from normal to acting like a slow drunk, disoriented and wobbly, very quickly. I saw her and didn't know what was wrong with her, maybe an upset tummy. I picked her up and she started shaking uncontrollably. I stayed calm but was scared for her. Her recovery took about a half hour, she was so tired, and then just like that she jumped up and was back to her normal happy bounce. I noticed that during the seizure she responded to my voice. I kept telling her "stay with me honey" and "mommy is right here". I spoke loudly as she seemed to be out of it, and she kept turning her head to the sound of my voice as she seemed to be blind. I think her seizure could have been worse had she not had comfort and a known command to stay with me. On this second seizure I recognized the signs that she was going to have a seizure and took her to my bedroom, put her on my bed pillow and laid down with her while she had her seizure. Since she is only 14 months old maybe she has epilepsy, even though it is mild from what I've seen here on KZread. I just don't know. I am hopeful that she grows out of this. Your videos were helpful about the different kinds of seizures. I love her so much and my heart is hurting for her. I want her to have whatever she needs at the veterinarian's to get better. I purchased health insurance for her and have been paying monthly for it since she was three months old, never imagining we would need it for anything like this.

Can remember when my 3yr old Mastin had 12 seizures in one night. They lasted minutes. This was maybe 6 months ago- caused her to be quite aggressive to one of my other dogs. We didn’t have enough money to take her to the vets so we literally just held her in the kitchen because if me, my mum and dad weren’t she would of thrown herself into the counters and caused herself more harm. We think it was cus she ate something . My other dog who’s 1, ate the same thing but she threw it up. We know cus she was shaking which was what notified us that something was up cause both were shaking.

Go to the store and buy some chicken (it can be legs or any part), boil it and you can freeze it for the whole week. You can buy a small bag of shredded carrots. Give that to her for a week and see what happens. Also, some flea meds can cause seizures as well. But definately stay away from any store bought dog food for a whole week and see if the seizures go away. Try not to put in alot of salt. My dog was not Epileptic, then all of a sudden...seizures. Thank you for this video. Our King Charles Cavalier just had his 5th seizure. We took him to the vet after the first one. They did labs and nothing stood out as a problem. They suggested the 'seizure diary' and we went home. About two week later, he had "cluster seizures" on and off all night, I was at the vet's office when the doors opened. The vet put him on meds. That was about 3 weeks ago and he had his first since the meds. We have not noticed any pre-ictal symptoms and post-ictal has been different each time. This time he kept whining like he needed something. He had water and I fed him...stilling whining. He was incontinent during the seizure but my husband took him out as usual, before he left for work. I thought maybe he had to poopy, so I took him out again . Nothing. Back inside and still whining. Oh yeah, I gave him the capsule before I fed him. I was distressed because I didn't know what was wrong! He has finally settled down and is napping. But it is so stressful not being able to do anything for him. Makes me sad.

She was so excited about the guys being in house and then upset i put her in bathroom it causes a siezure..thankfully my daughter knew and came and got me. She normally comes to after a min or 2 and acts like nothing happen but after a hour i called my husband to come home so i could get her to vet. Strangly the car ride always seems to help. I have 2 labradors, 9 and 10 years old. One of them started to have seizures at age of 5. Frequency is 4-5 a year. The second started a couple of years ago. 1-2 per year. Our vet opinion is that less than 5 situations per year do not require medication. Seizures happen usually early morning, start by vomiting a clear liquid and 10 seconds later convulsions set for about one minute. Afterwards, dog seems disoriented for about 4-5 minutes walking around the house as if trying to remember the environment. In 10 minutes things come back to normal and dog is willing to play, eat, or whatever he normally does.

I have had 4 seizure dogs and I found this to be helpful, though, I found the background music to be annoying and created some difficulty hearing the actual speaker. We found it helpful to announce “seizure” and we immediately shut off any lights, tv, or any other outside noise to provide the least amount of stimulation to the dog.I also think that it should be noted that most seizures are followed by the dog losing control of their bowels/urine. It is always difficult to decide when/how to get the dog outside while still allowing the dog to “rest” after the seizure. Most of our dogs were physically exhausted after going through a seizure and we encouraged quiet time and rest for the dog . Perhaps after seizure care could be addressed in further talks.

@@nickgipson912 Is your dog still having seizures? My dog was having seizures and I found out it was her store bought dog food. It was giving her seizures. Go to the store and buy some chicken (it can be legs or any part), boil it and you can freeze it for the whole week. You can buy a small bag of shredded carrots. Give that to her for a week and see what happens. Also, some flea meds can cause seizures as well. But definately stay away from any store bought dog food for a whole week and see if it goes away. Try not to put in alot of salt. My dog was not Epileptic, then all of a sudden...seizures. Then I found out it was her dog food.

My Jack Russell began having seizures last year. They only last about a minute, and I am guessing it’s because he is turning 18 next month. Typically he recuperates within a few minutes. My only concern is during several he has whelped and cried. I don’t want him to be in pain, is this a common occurance?

Great video, thank you for all the advice!! My 12 year old french bulldog started having seizures roughly 2 weeks ago. The last 3 days he had a seizure a day and the doctor prescribed Epilease 250 mg and he started it today. Although his blood tests came back great and he’s generally in a very good condition for his age, I am afraid that due to his age he can pass away from the meds or the seizures and this is making me panic all the time. :(

My dog has been having seizers in and off for the past year. Last night was her 4th one and I’m not sure what caused it. She just helped up her paw then started shaking. It lasted about 5 minutes. She kept trying to get my attention so I just gave her pats and cooled her down with water (I heard it was too cool her down) it seemed to have worked because she calmed down a few moments after. Before hand her leg muscles seemed to have given out and she whimpered in pain. I was wondering if there was anything more to do to help?

I have a video about the different causes of seizures that might help - kzread.info/dash/bejne/fpal1tqhpdKfc7A.html . If your dog was conscious throughout then this is not a typical seizure (you can get something called partial seizures where consciousness is maintained) and so it would be worth talking to your vet and getting her checked out as well as recording a video of an episode if at all possible

My dog 8yrs 21lb has had two seizures 10 months in between. He would paddle with his front legs, move very disoriented, lick his mouth constantly, he had drool too, he would try to stand but fall- that would last for more than 5 minutes (I was too nervous observing him that i forgot to count the minutes but on the second one he started at 7:52 am and it stopped at 8 am or a few minutes before) he vomit after the seizure but he stay desoriented for minutes longer. And he started to pant very fast until eventually he seemed back and alert but it took him like an hour to calm down and take a nap. On the 2nd seizure I managed to check the time, is not accurate but I think the seizure was 8 minutes aprox and then the vomiting happened and then the panting disorientation for 23 minutes. Two weeks before the 2nd seizure he started to show signs like he would suddenly sit and look a bit disoriented, and twitch a little and do as if he needed to vomit but then he would go back to normal. I was prepared to witness another seizure but it didn't happened until two weeks later.

His 1st seizure was on July 2021 and they gave him levetiracetam and this medication made him even weaker during the 1st doses his back paws were very weak he couldn't even jump. And I don't know if this medication worked because he just had a second seizure in may 2022. Also on October I had to take him to the vet because he was disbalanced while walking. But I didn't witnessed a seizure so I didn't knew what it was. I was with him the whole day and night there's no way I could've missed it. But he was disbalanced and a bit disoriented and then hours later he started to cry from pain in his stomach. He fought it on his own because where I live there's no emergency vet so I had to wait a day for an appointment. The vet couldn't find anything he told me it could be digestive issues and neurological ones maybe epilepsy but they didn't told me anything clear. His blood test seemed clear too. And they gave him Metronidazole and Prednisone. He has always had diarrea at least once a month since a puppy and he's 8yrs already but he always got well again. But the seizures, disbalance and stomach pain happened last year for the 1st time. I feel like the seizures could be related to his digestive issues. But I don't know how to prevent them or stop them. I'm very careful with his diet. It's not the best diet because I can't afford a perfect diet but I feed him boneless chicken and rice and dry dog food (purina brand) he still gets stomach issues once a month or so. And now he has had two seizures or maybe 3 because what happened in October seemed like the post effects of a seizure.

My dog had began crying out and shaking in the night so I went to the vet showed him the video of what looked to me like a seizure. the vet told me my dog had a broken knee. Over 2 more days he had 5 of what we were certain were seizures so we took him to a complete new vet that we had no insurance with. They diagnosed him with Kindey failure and said he had slight ligament damage in his knee but nothing severe. But they still can’t explain the seizures although their assuming epilepsy. I gave him another meds, but it didnt do any good. With alternate of 1 hour, my dog had 19 attacks in just one and a half day. I personally don't like to use KBr as a first line treatment although I know other vets do. Instead I tend to reach for either phenobarbital (which I have a video on here - kzread.info/dash/bejne/e6aVzpWOh8XMdbQ.html) or imepitoin and then use KBr as an add on if seizures are not controlled as well as I'd like. One of the issues with KBr is that any dose change takes quite a long time to be reflected in the levels of the drug within the body and I personally don't feel it is as effective as a sole treatment. Different dogs though do respond differently to antiseizure medication and it can at times take a bit of trialing different options to find what works best. I would talk to your vet about the possibility of starting another drug to see if that helps better control the seizures. If it does then you may well be able to wean off the KBr.

just letting you know Bear, my 17 year old Lhasa/maltese dog, made it through his dental surgery. It stopped the sneezing too. His canine teeth were probing up in into the nasal cavity and was infected. However, on March 30th, 4 days before Bears dental surgery, he had what appeared to be a small seizure or mini stroke. It was at 6am, he awoke from sleeping, cried out and stretched his neck out and eyes became fixed. He snapped out of it in less than a minute. His second episode was the same way, he peed a bit, awoke from sleeping and fell to the side. The third time was from sleeping, he wakes up and becomes stiff. He tends to shake his head before having one. All less than a minute long, no thrashing around, just stretches his neck out. Any thoughts on this?

He flings his limbs around really hard. Unfortunately, we don't have much of a warning if he's going into a seizure. What should I do if it looks like he might be hurting himself with how violent his are?

  • @OurPetsHealth

You should only move your dog if they are at risk of bashing into something and hurting themselves (although it can be easier to move those things such as table legs away from them), or they are in danger because of where they are such as at the top of some stairs or on the road. Otherwise there is the potential for you to get some medication from your vet to give rectally if the seizure is lasting more than a few minutes. Seizures are distressing to witness and can look very violent but they seldom result in physical harm. these videos may also help: when to start treatment for epilepsy - kzread.info/dash/bejne/YoKlrMtsYqTZptY.html and epilepsy facts - kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZHlsrM6LfdfFps4.html
