Tanovea: The First FDA-Approved Dog Lymphoma Treatment | Dr. Douglas Thamm

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Born in a human drug research company, Tanovea (rabacfosadine) is now making history treating lymphoma in dogs.
Lymphoma in dogs is very responsive to chemotherapy, but it also often relapses. Each time a dog comes out of remission, the cancer often gets harder to beat. Because of this, researchers are constantly looking for new treatments that can either get long-lasting results from the start or be used to beat back the cancer in those difficult cases.
Meet rabacfosadine, known by the brand name Tanovea. This drug is an injectable chemotherapeutic that just became the first ever FDA-approved treatment for lymphoma in dogs. Dr. Douglas Thamm, an oncologist at Colorado State University, has been working with Tanovea through most of its existence, and tells us all about how this drug came to be, how it works, and what we know so far about when it is most useful.

Unfortunately after 6 months of remission and 4 months after the end of the CHOP protocol the Lymphoma has returned. I was so hopeful after seeing this video but the cost to treat my dog with Tanovea will be over $8,000 for 6 treatments and that doesn’t include anything else that could occur during the treatments. This is so upsetting that these treatments couldn’t be more affordable. Also there are no clinical trials around New Jersey and I have to travel 1 hour and 40 minutes just to see a veterinary oncologist. This is all just so very sad. I’m hoping that giving Turkey tail mushroom supplements, anti inflammatory supplements and organic protein will help slow the progression. Good luck to all of you that choose to do Tanovea!

I have the same set of limitations. I am using mushrooms as well with only prednisone. We are at four months since diagnosis. She is still energetic and playful. One tumor is rather large so I’m not sure how much time she has, but she seems to have quality of life yet.

@@TwoBassholesandaKaren7107 Sad, the amount of money they rip you for knowing you are willing to do anything for your pet. It's a crime.

My dog could not get through the chemo. We were told he had about a week to live on February 18th. I was able to get his regular vet to prescribe Laverdia CA1. Its June and he is still here. Its worth a shot and its not that expensive. Hope it works for you

My girl is in her third chemo protocol for large cell b-cell multicentric lymphoma. The first time, she had CHOP but reacted badly to the prednisone, she she was weaned off it ASAP. She stayed in remission 2-1/2 months after her last treatment. When it returned, she had the Tanovea protocol. It was very harmful to her skin - many issues and infections. Her remission was 3 months + 1 week after the last treatment. Then lymphoma came back again. This time she is on a Doxorubicin/ Tanovea protocol of a single treatment every 3 weeks starting with Doxo for a total of 3 cycles. We also reduced the Tanovea to 1 vial this time (she is 60 lbs). So far, so good! This time, my girl is also going to an integrative TCVM vet to help with side effects. So far, so good! She is one week beyond her first Tanovea treatment. 2 more weeks then Two more cycles of Doxo/ Tanovea each given singularly three weeks apart. One thing not mentioned in the video was when asked “why alternate Doxorubicin with Tanovea?” The reason is that doxorubicin is damaging to the heart after so many total treatments. There is total lifetime dosage of doxorubicin. It is not safe for the heart to continue doxorubicin without limitations. And by the way, The Dog Cancer Survival Guide was extremely essential and got me through the toughest news I’ve ever received. Not only did the diet help but also the emotional help contained in the beginning of the book.

McGee failed Doxorubicin only after 2 treatments. We switched to Tanovea. He will have his 5th Tanovea treatment in 2 weeks. He has sailed through chemo. He hasn’t had any skin issues. He takes 10 mg of prednisone every other day. He has a great appetite and is energetic. He was diagnosed with B cell lymphoma. Logically I realize he can’t stay on chemo the rest of his life, but I’m worried about how long until the cancer comes back after his last treatment. I switched to Dr. Harvey’s paradigm and give him turkey tail mushroom. My vet recommended against apocaps. I’m torn about what to do there.

This is one of the things many folks facing lymphoma end up feeling -- they have so much support from chemo, they worry that once it's gone "nothing will help." Don't forget there are many other things to support your dog. Your vet may want to revisit Apocaps and other supportive supplements in Dr. Dressler's book once he's off chemo. Usually vets don't want to do too much while on chemo, just to make sure that when side effects occur, they can figure out what's causing what. Either way, don't lose hope -- there is a lot you will still be able to do!

Hi Follie - Tanovea can be used for both T-cell and B-cell, but it works best for B-cell. I hope you are able to find a treatment plan that works for you and your dog!
