Your Dog's Lymphoma Has Relapsed, Now What? Vlog 61

This video focuses on the chemotherapy options Dr. Sue recommends when a dog's lymphoma relapses or comes out of remission.
Should your dog go back on multi-agent CHOP or a single agent protocol like Tanovea or Lomustine? Does it matter how long they have been off chemotherapy? The answers are in this video.

We adopted our Golden retriever, Millie, aged seven and a half on the second of February 2024. I almost immediately located a small lump on her back. We took her to the vet on 14th March, by which time the lump had grown significantly and was looking very nasty, together with another twenty or so smaller lesions on her back and neck. The vet told us that it could be Lymphoma and we all agreed that if it was the worst case, we would not consider chemotherapy as it is too harsh on any dog. Most dogs don’t last more than four to six months after diagnosis. Some much less. He operated on the following Thursday (March 21) and removed approximately half of the lesions. On the previous Monday (18th) we had commenced her on a course of Ivermectin which we got from our local farm produce store. This was our decision. Thursday 21st March, Lymphoma was confirmed. 2nd April, sutures removed. Most of the remaining lesions had fallen off, leaving just 2. Millie had healed from the operation in an incredible manner. Our vet was amazed. Follow up by the vet was on 15th April by which time the remaining lesions had fallen off. The vet just kept looking at her and said he had never seen this before. Today is the 5th May and Millie is going from strength to strength. Everyone who knows her and her story (quite a lot of people) are delighted and amazed. What we don't know is how long she should be on Ivermectin, what the dose should be and where we go from here. Millie is also on a no carb diet and will remain on it. Any advice would be appreciated. I am posting this information on as many sites as I can.

Our dog was diagnosed 5 plus years ago and did very well with over 2 years of remission and then progressively less and has had many protocols and is now on mopp. She never looked so lethargic and sick. I know of a few dogs that have stayed in remission but as you say not usual

Thank you , just thank you for your informative content ! I am in vet med (Gen Practice, ICU/ER, and now toxicology) but Oncology is basic exposure. Our boy was diagnosed with stage 3 lymphoma 7 months ago , preventative check up and he feels great, and recently finished the CHOP protocol 5 weeks ago. Today at his recheck I noted a LN sub mandibular was larger. Oncologist agreed, cytology suspect w/o sending out concerning cells and reactive cells ( skin flare up) so we moved forward with Tanovea today. He feels great ! I was hoping on your feed back on how well in your experience they do ? I understand every kid is different , but wanted your insight .

Hi! Very good and informative video, as all of them are. I noticed you administer chemotherapy with a butterfly needle and in the lateral saphenous vein. Is it easier or is there a special reason why there and not with a regular IV catheter (for fluid and drug administration)? I also admire how calm all the dogs are. Thumbs up for your work and positive energy you share.

It depends on the chemo drug. Vincristine and cyclophosphamide can be given thru a butterfly but a drug like doxorubicin which can cause significant tissue damage if it gets outside the vein so we will always give that with a "clean stick" IV catheter. And thank you for the positive feedback.

Tiffany, did you have a pet who didn't go into remission (failed C.H.O.P protocol) ? My Pomeranian did not go into remission with CHOP protocol. I don't know if this happened (or when) to your pet but I decided to continue on and I started my Pomeranian on the 2nd kind of chemotherapy treatment called TANOVEA. I posted another (long) comment with question in this Vlogs video here. If you look at the comments I go into detail about my and my Pomeranian's experience with CHOP and (one) TANOVEA treatments. Every pet and human is different so I don't expect everyone to agree or disagree with my posted comment. If you want to share your pet's experience (if any) with me, please do. 🌈🐶🙏

Have you ever had any cases where you started with TANOVEA first before CHOP? Our 10 year old Australian Shepherd was just diagnosed with lymphoma. Due to his breed and having low white blood cells, we're assuming he has T cells and I heard patients taking TANOVEA has a better fight vs a patient with B cells on CHOP. Thoughts?

Our dog was diagnosed early January of 2022. Started Chop and end 3rd week of May. Early September it was back. My vet gave her prednisone for 2 weeks as he was out of town and then started her on Mitoxantrone. That will be given every 3 weeks. I asked him about Tanovea and he said it is still new and one other that I read about that he said is too hard to get. I am hoping we are doing the best for her. She is an ESS and is only 5. He said this would be less expensive. He already wants her back for a blood test one week after getting the first dose. Hoping that isn't a weekly addition also. Starting CHOP again would be another approximately $7,000. Really unsure as to what is the smartedst thing to do. Any advice would be so appreciated!

I cooked my dogs food. It was simple and that way I knew exactly every ingredient she ate at every meal. She ate this for 9 years and NEVER ever snubbed it. So many dog foods are just dried or canned over priced CRAP. Making my dogs food was actually less expensive than manufactured crap sold online/stores. Boiled until cooked through boneless skinless chicken breast. OVERCOOKED (mushy then rinsed once with water and strained) Jasmine rice. Gerber brand 2nd stages, One ingredient baby foods. (Check their labels, one ingredient means one vegetable , or one protein and then water, nothing else!). I used (Gerber 2nd Stages) pumpkin, sweet potato, carrot and green beans. I pureed her food in a single serving smoothie mixer blender (magic bullet blender) before warming & serving. It was 70% meat/protein, 10% rice, 20% Gerber (mixture). I loved my dog, cooking for her was my pleasure!

So on tuesday evening he was dying in my arms. Can you please explain me more. Only his lymphenodes were swollen under his neck. He had a huge liver and milt. @@eviken1982 My Pomeranian had Mandibular Lymphoma. Before she started Chemotherapy treatment her Lympnodes were so swollen with Cancer that when she slept she snored or horrible wheezing (like Asthma noises) and then she'd stop breathing like sleep apnea patients do until either I got up to wake her up or until she'd literally jar/jolt herself awake. It took almost 3 weeks to get my dog an appointment into the clinic because I live in a very crowded city (2 million people+) with only 2 animal cancer car clinics. My dog MIGHT have gone into remission with the CHOP treatments protocol had she been able to get in sooner. She passed away last week 😢

Carli, I am sorry about your dogs relapse. My Oncologist DVM never mentioned any chemotherapy treatment besides CHOP and TANOVEA. I guess because she passed away before needing to try it but because I had her euthanized because of a different (just as serious) health concern which caused her pain. I didn't see an answer from the Vlogger to your question in this video, how did your dog do on Lomustine? 🙏🐶

8/27/2021: Roxie, my 4 y/o chug (chihuahua/pug) started treatment for lymphoma in January. We didn’t have the funds for the B-cell/T-cell testing and it seemed like the results were not too crucial for her oncology team so we decided to start treatment right away and skip the testing. My dog finished the CHOMP protocol July8th and was declared in remission, but this past Tuesday we noticed the lymph nodes in her neck got swollen again. She saw her oncologist today and her white and red blood cell count was good and her liver was clear, our doctor said my dog is at stage 2 /5. She got a dose of Lomustine and sent us home with Prednisone. We plan to go back in a week to see if there’s any progress and go from there. I thought I’d just share my experience 9/8/2021: We will be coming to the doctor every 3 weeks and alternate Lomustine and Mitoxantrone until she gets 3 doses of each. We will be finishing the prescription for Prednisone but no refill. We can no longer feel her lymph nodes and it seemed she only have minor side effects from the first round of Lomustine but that only lasted for 1 day. The doctor said she is in remission again! Let’s hope stays in remission!!🙏🏼🙏🏼
