Can VA Doctors Write a Nexus Letter?

In the video Leah addresses the challenges veterans face in getting assistance from VA healthcare providers for filling out forms such as DBQs, Nexus letters, and aid and attendance forms. She notes that veterans often encounter reluctance from providers who cite reasons such as conflict of interest or lack of time. Leah aims to empower veterans by discussing the VA's own policy, VHA Directive 1134, which mandates VA healthcare providers to assist in form completion. She highlights key sections of the directive, emphasizing that VA providers are required to provide medical opinions (Nexus statements) and complete DBQs as part of their duties, contrary to the common belief of a conflict of interest. The directive also covers the completion of various forms, including those for benefits claims and handicap parking. Leah urges veterans to approach their providers respectfully and provides guidance on how to request form completion, particularly for mental health DBQs, where she recommends a neutral provider to maintain the integrity of the patient-provider relationship.

Thank you, Miss. I was denied twice for ptsd, headaches + after being assaulted by a fellow service-member and the pain and concussion that resulted. The VA said I didn't seek treatment while active-duty. I was so angry when I received the letters. My trauma is so bad, the judge had to cancel my SSDI hearing because my panic attack was so bad. I do have my hearing later this September and I am appealing the VA's denial. Will also request my VA psychiatrist for my Nexus letter. Hello fellow vets. So, I asked my PC doctor at the VA to assist me with paperwork in filing a claim. She immediately refused stating they were not allowed to get involved with that process. I mentioned VHA Directive 1134 but, she advised me to take it up with her CMO (Chief Medical Officer). I’ve left a message both at the clinic and over the phone for the CMO, have not yet heard back from her. I contacted the Patient Advocate and he was no help. He only regurgitated what my doctor said. I offered him to look up directive 1134 however, he didn’t seem interested and said he’d refer me to the CMO.

One told me he was told not to (internal policy for specialists, maybe?). But my primary care doctor has written one and has recently offered to write more. Problem: I just sat in a Video appointment between my husband and his Neurologist. He has never met the man in person. We discussed that he really should see my husband in person so he sees the symptoms of Parkinsonism (another hurdle) better than on a camera. He agreed but also let us know that he only goes into the office on Wednesdays so a face to face rarely has an open slot. I can't imagine how long we would have to wait to get one of those precious appointments for him to fill out a DBQ. I don't see it happening.

I went to VA Director because it is Director's responsibility per 1134 to enforce 1134. Director refused to see me. New rule. Patient Advocate has to handle all Director complaints first. My case had been going nowhere for years. I was in an exam with my doctor, and he called a more experienced doctor in who said something about my issue that made it a slam dunk. I asked the Doctor who was doing the exam to notate what the other doctor had said and he did it. A week later I came back without an appointment and asked to speak to my doctor. I asked him to write a letter for me basically stating what the other doctor had said in the exam notes and he did it for me. I guess some doctors are okay doing it and some are not. Do you have any videos talking about private doctors who refuse to assist you in writing a nexus letter or to fill out a DBQ. I have a situation where my private health HMO doctor has outright refused to address that a correlation exists between my VA approved injury with a secondary effect in another part of my body saying that it is not possible despite my having provided him with evidence from other credible professionals as proof that it is possible.

Hello, would you please address the issue of Cannabis use and DVA health care? I have downloaded VHA Directive 1315 which states that Veterans that use Cannabis WILL NOT lose their medical benefits yet my clinic will not provide me certain meds for PTSD. I have spoken to VA staff that also stated the same but my clinic does not comply. This issue has certainly caused me and many others problems that I think are a mistake on the providers part. Any info you can share with us would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for Your Service.

If you look at the hard black letter law it has an exception if doc sees a conflict. Conflict is not defined. Yes the policy is there. Would you want someone filling out a form against their will. I find chocolate magnetic. 20 year old Scotch is better.

I asked my VA podertrist if he could fill out a nexus letter for me, for plantar fasitais secondary to my knee injury due to it changing my gate. And he told me that he does not have anything to do with Compensation and pension. Should I pull this off and show it to him.

I just asked my primary care doctor to fill out a nexus letter for my knee and migraines. He said he would but the director of nurses told him not to. I have an intent to file ending in a matter of weeks (may 9th 2023). My primary care doctor told me to call the 800 number to get a nexus letter. Long story short, I was directed to health resource services then to patients advocate. Now it’s a full on complaint. I wish I knew this before then. Now I’m in a race with time.

@@prestigeveteranmedical yes I have. I am not sure about the VA 1134 form. VSO says "that The DBQ is what they use WHEN you have a Compensation Exam AFTER we submit the claim. They won’t do those in a regular health-care check-ups. You don’t have a claim in yet. You are jumping the gun. You are asking him to do a letter UP TO THIS POINT, on what he has ALREADY gone over with you, on what your history has been up to this point. There will be a Compensation Exam completed AFTER we send in the claim. Those are scheduled after the claim is in." I'm confused.
