New 2024 GERD Updates for VA Disability Ratings

In this video, Leah discusses recent updates to the VA disability ratings for GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) effective May 19, 2024. She explains that GERD is no longer rated analogously with hiatal hernia but now has its specific rating criteria. Leah highlights the new disability benefit questionnaire (DBQ) that includes various GERD-related symptoms and the severity of conditions like esophageal stricture, which significantly influence the rating percentages. She emphasizes the importance of medical documentation in claims and encourages veterans with GERD, often related to service or other service-connected conditions, to consult with legal professionals or claims agents for personalized guidance. The updated ratings now reflect the structural nature of GERD, distinguishing it from functional digestive disorders related to Gulf War exposures.

I was 10% service connected. I was hospitalized twice, diagnosed with hiatal hernia, peptic ulcers ,Mallory-Wiess tears hemostasis vomiting a lot of blood and melena. 1st time in 2002 and second time in 2016. Both times I had endoscopys to repair my esophagus I still have bouts of Gerd multiple times a week. I was denied in 2017. VA never obtained my private medical records from both occurrences. I sent the n my records from 2016. The records from 2002 are no longer being held by the hst hospital.

Go back and file a claim. Make a copy of all your information pertaining to GERDS. Take it with you to your C&P exam. I went through the exact same thing. I gave the C&P the evidence myself. That finally put me over the hump and got my 100% P&T.

My GERD claim has been at the BVA since July 2021. How will they decide my claim with so many changes going on since I was diagnosed and claim submitted? I've since been diagnosed with IBS. And service connected for it. But at 0%. But have put in for an increase.

You can now have it separated and most likely get a higher rating for IBS, but they’ll “likely” going to take another look at your GERD and end up with a decrease.

Diagnosed in service with esophageal dysfunction at the bottom where flap covers stomach opening. Caused severe Gerd spasms etc. Past couple years I’ve had 3 dilations for strictures and now have EOE. My doctor says EOE could possibly have started with the wear on my esophagus from years of chronic Gerd and now I’m having the allergic response of EOE causing inflammation in my esophagus. Can EOE be secondary to Gerd??

I am very curious how gerd which is its own individual diagnosis, can be rated underneath esophageal stricture. One of my patients can have Gerd and not have esophageal stricture and vice versa. Why will the VA not create a separate category for GERD by itself

@@prestigeveteranmedical perhaps I did not. What I'm not understanding is on the DBQ when it is asking whether there is a stricture. If a veteran has all of the signs of GERD and it is well documented that they have Gerd but do not have an esophageal stricture, will it be denied?

Esophageal stricture, is BS, because I have alot of acid reflux and abdominal pain, but dont necessarily have esophageal stricture. The problem is that many people can have the symptoms of gerd and not have esophageal stricture, just makes it harder for people to get an increase. I got service connected but got lowballed 10%. My vso tried to supplement it, howver they were reviewing it under the NEW criteria. 😔
