Can the Kraken Get Back to the Playoffs Next Season?

Спорт

Seattle missed the playoffs after a surprise run last season. Which storyline was more accurate, the 2023-23 run or the 2023-24 playoff miss?

Haha, reminds me of a football (soccer) sim game called Hattrick. Its actually still around. Either way, whenever someone would complain about shitty luck on the Swedish forum, people would say hkovgadöhel, which is an abbreviation for what would translate to something like "shut up and be glad that you even have a team".

This video felt did not seem like a good read on the Kraken players. I guess that is what comes with trying to cover 32 teams. Do not expect any of the UFAs or Yamamoto to be back, although Kole Lind can if he stays in the AHL, where he had a great season. The real story for the Kraken is whether Francis can pull off a trade, using his prospects/picks, as the UFA market, if you read the whole list the NHL Rumors just published, is pretty weak. Pretty much anyone taken would be an overpay. If not, then the focus has to be on how quickly can some of the prospects funnel through the AHL up to the NHL. Besides Wright, there are five other players from the 2022 draft (Firkus, Nyman, Kokko, Goyette, and Nelson) who are potential NHLers. The run of the CV Firebirds in the playoffs will be fascinating, as they have pretty much all of the top picks from the 2021, 2022, and 2023 drafts, outside of Beniers and a few still playing in CHL playoffs or overseas, assigned currently to the Firebirds. Who is going to make a name for themselves if they go all the way to the finals again, beyond the established AHL vets on the team? Hope they all get a chance and not just the press box.

I worried in the off season last year that their unexpected success had set expectations for this season too high. Then this season seemed not only to have a normal regression but also some extraordinarily ill-timed injuries to key players every time it looked like maybe they were getting their mojo back. I don't know what to make of Hakstol's firing. Part of me feels that he's being scapegoated, but there are rumors that some important players let it be known in exit interviews that they didn't want to stay if he was kept on, so who knows? Some of his decisions at times did seem odd. Part of what was so fun last year was that the success seemed to be a total team effort, not one star player & his support squad and I would love to see that return next year.

  • @surfmonkey89

I think the primary things the team is missing are aggressiveness, high skill level, and leadership (as in, someone the players really respect as a leader). If they can make an addition of one player and a good coach, you might be able to address all three. You're probably going to have to over pay, but such is life as an expansion team, especially one so geographically far away from where a lot of guys prefer to play. I doubt what we saw this year is the "true" Matty Beniers - he's still very young, after all - but I think his ceiling is below "superstar", and probably in the range of "solid two way player that has a long career if he can avoid injuries". Based on what I've seen from Wright, he's going to push Beniers for the top-line center spot very soon (assuming we don't bring someone else in). That could be a good thing; it might motivate Beniers to raise his game more with some competition. It does feel like 95pts is probably the ceiling next year, unless we sign a stud and everything goes perfectly.

At least you waited for the coach to be fired this time 😂 The timing is really odd, unless they have someone in mind and are worried someone might be aiming for their guy. Rod the Bod is off the table.

It feels like their current ceiling is a 1st round upset like last year. They have bunch of guys in there late 20s early 30s so i think theyll compete for the playoffs but they need their prospects to take over at some point.

@@taraburnett In 2016, the IP in the United States for the Seattle Metropolitans was claimed by a dude in Seattle who sells the old red, white, and green striped Metropolitans sweaters from the 1917 Stanley Cup (first US team to win it). He claimed the IP after it was abandoned by the previous rights holder. Which is a thing... apparently? Anyway, he's suing the team because the Winter Classic sweaters were an homage to the Metropolitans sweaters and he cried foul. The team countered that he didn't have a legal claim to the IP and it's all gone downhill from there.

I think the 90-95 point range is a fair estimation for the Kraken. If they can maintain their goaltending and get closer to league average in shooting that probably translates to 10 more points and if they get a breakout year from someone or sign a top talent like Reinhart, Guentzel, etc and they deliver that’s probably another 5 points bringing them up to mid 90s and competing for a wildcard spot

The Kraken last season had a lot of puck luck that shooting percentage just unsustainable obviously they’re like one of those teams that I bet if you look at possession numbers, they’re good, but they necessarily don’t create a lot of chances off those possession numbers it’s weird and I know it’s the system probably but don’t know changing the way they play. I don’t know if that would help much because I don’t think they have offensive players to do that but you never know. I mean, Ron Francis definitely has a certain type. I always thought in the first three seasons that SEATTLE kind of looked like the hurricane light the hurricanes have better players, but it’s that same kind of style where it can put you to sleep, but then you win but when you really need it, you don’t get it so I don’t know it’s that’s an interesting one. Great job as usual.

A big concern I noticed from following the team was just how much the team checked out and didn’t give a crap after the trade deadline. There were even reports of some players chuckling on their way back to the locker room after losing in OT to the Coyotes. And even when they won games, not only was it often against bad teams, but Shane Wright was basically carrying that team while he was here. The leadership structure was fractured this season, and that has to be addressed this offseason.
