Can the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus Torpedo the Competition? | Edmunds

The 2019 Nautilus replaces the MKX as Lincoln's midsize SUV offering, and it is more than just a name change. Lincoln has updated the styling and added more options for powertrains and safety suites, as well as bundled various concierge-type services in with Lincoln leasing or ownership. It's part of a move to give each Lincoln model its own identity. Does the newly named Nautilus rise to the top? Edmunds special correspondent Elana Scherr takes a first drive around Santa Barbara, California, in a 2019 Black Label Gala-themed Nautilus.
Q: Why did Lincoln go with a smaller engine for the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus?
A: On first glance it might seem like a downgrade to have the base engine in MKX (the V6) become the top engine in the Nautilus. But Lincoln says the change from a six-speed transmission to the new eight-speed allows the smaller 250-horsepower turbo 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine to match the performance of the previous V6 and get better mileage. And it says the 335-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 with the new eight-speed performs better still and gets more miles on each tank. Previously the MKX was rated at 19 or 20 mpg combined, depending on the configuration, and through the magic of more gears, the front-wheel-drive Nautilus gets 23 mpg combined with the 2.0-liter engine and 21 mpg combined with the 2.7-liter. The combined figure drops 1 mpg if you go with the optional all-wheel drive, but the fuel economy ratings still beat the previous year's.
Q: Is the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus rear-wheel-drive?
A: The 2019 Lincoln Nautilus is a front-wheel-drive platform, and it's also available in an all-wheel-drive configuration. In typical driving situations, the Nautilus is FWD, only engaging the rear wheels as driving wheels when it senses the driver needs more grip, like on a slippery driveway.
Q: The 2018 Lincoln Navigator had a great interior. How does the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus compare?
A: While the interior in the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus isn't quite as jaw-dropping as the Lincoln Navigator's or the Continental's, it is in keeping with Lincoln's push to be stylish and innovative in interior design. The seats are comfortable and adjustable, and all the controls and storage compartments are within easy reach.

Loved her style of reviewing. She speaks from the perspective of the average consumer rather than an enthusiast. It was very refreshing to not have to listen to whether the dash was soft touch or not, or if the door sounded solid when it closed, if the backup camera quality wasn’t super crisp (as long as its very usable, ppl really don’t care), 0-60 time, and the list goes on.

Here's a good trick for remembering which gear you're in Elana (at the 05:58 videomark). The specified switch button should be illuminated, but easier still...if the car is going forward, it's in D. If it's going backwards, it's in R. If it's stationary in your driveway, it's probably in P.

I'm sure the Lincoln badge would be more acceptable than a Ford badge in the country club parking lot but I have to wonder if the Nautilus is worth the $25K difference in price compared to a top trim Ford Edge Sport with all the trimmings. I seriously considered the latter a few months back when I was looking at a midsize crossover. I was impressed by the 2.7L turbo V6 and the fit/finish of the Edge was quite good. Unfortunately, my wife (the most frequent driver of the vehicle) preferred the Kia Sorento and I couldn't blame her. And while the Nautilus is obviously a luxurious place to spend some time, the Sorento nearly matches it in a similarly sized, more efficiently packaged, and nearly as luxurious package.

This isn't a knock on this reviewer so much as it is a knock on most reviewers. Downsizing to 2.0L turbos, especially on SUVs might result in better MPG in a lab, but it almost always results in WORSE MPG in the real world. Same can be said for cars that are getting 1.2, 1.4, 1.5L turbos, or in some cases even 2.0 turbos. So far eco boost implementation has resulted in being eco or getting boost but in day to day driving in their SUVs they get worse mileage than the 3.5L V6 (in the Explorer for example). Car and Driver has implemented a real world driving loop for testing MPG, I would argue the loop is too short at something like 100 miles, it should probably be double that, or triple even, but at least it's a good start on real world MPG. Also dash read outs of MPG are frequently incorrect and by a wide margin. Measure yourself over a period of numerous tanks to get a idea of actual MPG. I like the turbo craze, the turbo 6 in my BMW is unbelievably good and having owned a couple of their vehicles including N20 powered and N55 powered vehicles, on the sedans the 2.0 does indeed get slightly better real world mileage on the X3 the 6 is better on the highway especially at higher speeds and about the same in mixed daily driving.

Im a Ford fan been buying F150 , and Rangers smaller trucks because of the Canadian fuel cost near $6.00 the US gallon , but i think trough the years they became overpriced and with very plasticky insides ,if you pay 50-60K for a small SUV truck up to 90K for a full load F 150 you might as well buy a Mercedes it's crazy in that price point to get fake leather and a full plastic dash with a small 5-7 inches display with all the techno geeks fan we've all became , never like Dodge to much but the inside of their 1500 BigHorn pickup line sets the new standards with a 12 inches center display and real leather and real wood inserts send every brands back to their drawing board for small SUV and pickup trucks for 2018-2019 if you goto lay an amount near the price of a small home better deliver on it !

Excellent review although the interior may not wow anyone hit is a very effortless and simple design once again and some cases too simple but it might be in the same just right for someone who is getting to a luxury vehicle and then actually learn everything quickly and enjoy the ride I think the vehicle looks quite stylish just my opinion LOL

Your jewelry analogy was not good but your love for cooled seats is tops. I love the exterior and while the interior is nice it’s instantly dated compared to the Navigator. Solid effort but I’ll wait until the next generation of this and the MKC.

Its nice, very nice looking., I would like an engine option that docent include a turbo. 3.5L non turbo would fit nicely

Is the Nautilus built on the same platform as the Ford Explorer?!? Was not mentioned in the video. Good video review. 😊

I feel the Aviator would be the Explorer's match. The Nautilus maybe somewhere between the Escape and Explorer, idk what Lincoln suv it's replacing

Looks pretty cool but I don't like the shift knobs some cars have or the shift button layout they did here on the dash. It seems too easy for kids in your car to hit a button or turn a knob thinking it was something else. I am a manual transmission guy but if I do get an auto i still prefer column shifters myself for automatics. Just my preference.

I like the Nautilus. I just hope they somehow find a way to put an Aviator interior in the Nautilus. I believe that would knock that out of the park.

Interior looks old. Lincoln should have put the aviator interior into this, but I guess this is more a refresh anyway. Nice review however, great job!

Its a 2018 with an updated front end. They just removed the 3.7 engine in the line up...next best thing is the 2.7 . The small 4 cyl engine is too small for the weight of the vehicle.
