"Boards don't hit back." They still hurt like hell, though. I would argue that the real lesson behind Bruce's message was not strictly about board breaking being perceived as a test of strength, but a lesson on not underestimating an opponent or selling them short. A weak or cowardly opponent is still capable of besting you, either by guile or unconventional tactics.

I think a lot of it has to do with them mostly using their arm. Didn't really put their hip into it or their weight... Likely because they didn't know how to do it efficiently. So boards vs just arm, you're gonna bounce off eventually.

I have been in the martial arts since 1964. This is the best explanation as to why breaking boards is part of some martial arts. And this was really fun! Jesse is a first class gentleman interacting with the volunteers and demonstrates the true spirit of martial arts. A person is not being braced (as with the boards) when being struck. They are moving and the strike could be deflected depending on the position of the recipient. However, this demonstration is more about confidence and proper application. I felt many held back on the four board attack both mentally and physically. This was so much fun seeing Jesse as a wonderful martial artist, educator, and entertainer! First video I've seen of Jesse.

When I trained in taekwondo as a kid, every belt test required that we break a board. When advancing to bo-black, we had to break three. On your black-belt test, you had to repeat every board break you had previously. That was 13 consecutive boards. It's kind of scary those first few belts, but the main thing I learned from them is following through. You get hurt most when you hesitate.

I always like suspended breaks (someone holding the board with two fingers) or tossing the board in the air and breaking it with a punch. The idea of "Breaking things" goes back to the idea that "Blocks" are NOT blocks, but rather strikes and the intent is to damage whatever limb presents itself, up to and including breaking it. It puts all the conditioning and breaking into context.

Speed breaks vs Power breaks. A suspended or a thrown board requires a really fast strike otherwise the board just gets slapped across the room still intact. A braced board only requires power with a moderate amount of speed but a suspended break requires a much higher level of technique.

@@KARATEbyJesse Think of the Tensho Kata from Goju. There is a 4 strike movement, done with the palm and back of the wrist. I had a Goju Shihan that could break 4 boards in succession, with that movement (up, down, inside, outside). That's not about "power" (as in Muscle), but Speed, Focus/Ki and FLOW. It's the difference in thinking in Terms of BLOCK, vs. Block, punch, knifeedge, sweep, joint lock/finish...the FLOW of movement. You cannot be Rigid/Hard and still FLOW.

If you think about it when the board doesn’t break you could say that the boards hit your hand resulting in more pain than if you went through. It just occurred to me when I read your comment.

the wooden boards we break at competitions are 2.5 cm or 1 inch thick. I don't think that will work for most people. what also strikes me is the position of your hand. I have been taught to fold the hand upwards with shuto so that it will facilitate the edge of the carpal bone because it is very sharp and hard.

In what my teacher called "traditional Taekwon-Do" (apparently it should rather be called Tang-Soo-Do) we used to break 2,5cm boards, but I don't think I ever broke two with my hands (but with my elbow and side kicks), but later we focused more on breaking roof tiles, where I had to break 8 for my brown belt test. I did manage 10 and failed at 12 if I recall correctly.

Are those boards 3/4 inch or a full 1 inch thick? Are they radiata pine? In my first school (kyokushin) female shodan was expected to break 2 1-inch boards all hand techniques and 3 1-inch boards all foot techniques. For male shodans requirement was 3 boards hand and 4 boards leg techniques. I was the only female student and didn't want to be treated in any special way, so was doing the same stuff as the guys. I'm 5 ft nothing bantamweight :)

Exactly stated. Well done. When i break boards, i have this stuggle in my head that i can't or impossible versus i can and will. Sometimes i break and add another board sonetimes the boards win. When this happens, i go back to more training. But always the struggle. My Sabimnim reminds me to not think just trust my training. My body knows what to do. Just do. Love your videos and your encouraging enthusiasm.

Sensei Jesse Great idea and video. Just have to share this. Many years ago I had the opportunity to attend a seminar with Sensei Dan Inosanto. He told us a great story hopefully he doesnt mind me sharing it and if i remeber it correctly.. lol. Sometime in the 60's he and Bruce Lee were training and talking about board breaking and how everyone was doing it he had said Bruce always talked about boards not hitting back but the next day Sensei Inosanto went to Bruce Lee's house and when he walked into the garage all the beams along the wall were broken.... 😅 Guess he wanted to see if he could do it as well. Thank you again for the video the confidence and energy you gave everyone was fantastic. Be well.

Theatre teacher here. Most of my teaching is just about helping people release themselves from their own limits and fears. Stopping them from setting themselves up for failure by stopping to fear failure itself and just going for it. I absolutely love what you're doing here. Not into martial arts but this kinda made me want to research a bit and maybe find out if there are some tools there that I could use for trustbuilding in general.

Great video. Good idea for advertising too. It's just me and one or two other guys who been training wing chun for years. We sometimes get a few new people but they usually only stay 5 months or less because they fail to realize it's a lifestyle not just something they learn in 10 seconds. I do most the advertising and ads for us but it's one of those lineages where they dnt want you to show much. Its frustrating trying to advertise without being able to show anything. Trying to find ideas like this. Ofcoarse we dnt really do the board stuff. But still good idea to get people trying stuff.
