It's a great point about what works on screen and what doesn't. John Wayne was a mentor of a lot younger actors in brawls during films. That's why Wayne always reached way back, balled up his fist and displayed a huge telegraphed punch to include the audience. A perfect example is good old school proffessional wrestling. It's designed to emotionally put you right in the ring with whatever character that your connected to via the storyline. I like the fact that both people in this video have good sense of humor and incorporated it, very good! 👍

He has a very high fight IQ and a sharp eye for details like a fighter's rhythm. Although most people can attest to the importance of not telegraphing your strikes, I found his explanation of people not being able to judge distance from the front pretty eye opening, and it makes sense when you start to think of taillights in the back of cars for example. Also, engaging the hips at the last second really helps you understand how to both train for and apply the concept in your training, since most fighters' muscle memory is already adapted to doing the opposite. Edit: spelling

The concept he's explaining at 4:00 also appears very often in HEMA. In European swordsmanship, one very common theme is that the hands move before any other part of the body, be it the hips or shoulders or legs or anything. By initiating the actual attack itself (even just milliseconds) before putting the rest of your body into it, you can cut down telegraphing by a mountain. It's always funny how much all martial arts share in basic body mechanics.

Yeah its very interesting. I had teachers both in Wing Chun and Boxing teaching this, what can be difficult though is to apply it with as much force, as its generally easier to develop force if you make use of your body momentum first. Thats one of the reasons why many teachers of Wing Chun emphasizes many strikes, especially on weak/critical points, using before mentioned principal.
