My mother used to wear Youth Dew in the 70s. I got a sample of that recently and it's way too intense for me...like the sales assistant who gave the sample to me said, put it in a leather bottle and call it Rodeo and the cowboys will eat it up.

What's most frustrating and proves it's more about masculinity versus femininity and not gay versus straight is that it's always more socially acceptable for a woman to embrace masculine things than it is for a man to embrace feminine things. If she enjoys masculine things she's a tough tomboy, be he if enjoys feminine things he's a sissy? It really is all ridiculous. Wear what smells good.

First of all 👏👏👏 Such an genuine confession.I’m sure that all of us trully appreciate and enjoy what you just said. With time all of us can see what are the rules that this world was built on and question weather we agree with them or see that these rules don’t work same for everybody or see the true intentions of these rules. See, my story with “ women’s” perfumes was a bit from the other perspective and I don’t know if I’ll be able to fully and properly explain it as you did. I wore “men’s” colognes up until I got my first job.I usually got them from the relatives, so when I got my first job- I was already moved out of my parent’s house and it was actually the first time I was about to buy my own fragrance . Before I purchased a full bottle I ordered a few samples and while choosing them I realised that I don’t really like fragrances marketed towards men.Period. There was something about them that wasn’t sitting right with me. In the end I ordered Lolita Lempicka edp that was my signature for years (I had only one fragrance at that time). Having said that, I was never very masculine and I was never thought to be very masculine . If I got a penny for every time I was mistaken for the woman I would really really be rich ,because it happened all my life and it still happens up until today and it will happen. It is what it is. Since I am biologically a male, the society tries to push me into this box .When I was a teenager I kinda fell under that pressure and tried to be more masculine ,but in the end I realised it was just me trying to please everybody around without any success, to be honest with you, because the society is never satisfied and keeps sending new demands. I had some shitty experiences too, but that’s another story. Coming to conclusion (finally/ yeah, I know - it was supposed to be a poem, but ended up as a novel) , I am now almost 29 and I couldn’t care less if people judge me on my fragrance - in the end people come and go , I am not going to please everybody, because it’s impossible ,but it’s possible to please myself and be content about my choices. I don’t have a big collection of fragrances (10 -ish) , but all of them are marketed towards women. Oh well...big deal...the Earth is still spinning. I hope you and Maria are going to have an awesome day! Cheers!✌️

Funnily enough I was just searching for a video on this topic a couple days and I couldn’t find much on it. So I was happy to see this in my feed! I totally agree, I don’t think scents have anything to do with gender. We’ve just been socialized to think that way.

Interesting timing. The death anniversary of my favourite artist Prince was just the other day. He was very much ahead of his time in terms of his progressive mentality towards this topic. You echo his sentiments and I'm glad to see this discussion. Fragrance marketing and the psychology behind it is just a small piece of the conversation, but it represents a bigger overall pandemic in our society. Looking forward to more thought provoking content.

Very well said!! 👏👏👏 Before I dive into this hobby I also had that preconceived idea that women's perfume is for women and I would never wear that. Needless to say that as soon as I went through this fragrance rabbit hole, that standardized idea vanished. There are just fragrances: some more floral, others more woody, etc. I love Shalimar EDP, Mitsouko EDP, Black Orchid EDP, Chanel 19 EDP, Hermes Eau des Merveilles Bleue... Just to name a few. What's really funny though is to see the sales rep asking if it's a gift to a woman and I reply: I'm testing for myself. Oh the faces 😂 Another funny thing is: "feminine" perfumes from the 20's, 30's, 40's... All smell way more masculine than the majority of the new men's designer fragrances.

This has the be one of the best videos about fragrances here in KZread. I totally agree with you 100%, we should not limit ourselves just because we want to please others. To each is own! And it’s time for us to eliminate toxic masculinity because this can hinder us from progressing and accepting the things beyond what’s familiar to us. MAD RESPECT to you sir for coming up with this video 👏🤍

I’m glad I stumbled on this video. I remember the first fragrance that was gifted to me years ago was Fahrenheit by Dior. I fell immediately in love with it and I love it till today. This was when it was just released so it’s the original formulation. It never occurred to me to worry about anything other than do I like it? I’m a female, and the person who gifted it is male and wears whatever fragrance he likes, male or female. What other people think of you isn’t really your business. It’s theirs 😁😁! You do you, and do whatever makes you happy. In the end, it’s your life and your experience . I also subscribed!

Way to go, sir! Considering perfumery as an art form (i.e., olfactory art), I'd say if the beauty in an art product is able to resonate with me, then there's a good chance that it'd resonate with some others all the same, or at least that's how I'd prefer to believe. I don't think there's anything wrong with sharing beauty and making our surroundings more beautiful, be it by a painting, a piece of music, or a perfume. Btw, some scents in my arsenal that I thoroughly enjoy wearing while might be considered feminine: The Different Company - Osmanthus Hermès - Eau des Merveilles Bleue Hermès - Un Jardin Sur Le Toit Guerlain - Shalimar (EDT), Jicky (EDP), Mitsouko (EDP), and also many other Guerlain classics, for that matter.

This guy speaks some real facts, and it gives motivation and excitement like I feel strong knowing I'm not the only guy that can wear perfume, for the longest time in my years growing up throughout my life I've always been following the marketing beliefs where you have to wear a specific cologne since your a"man" and if you were to wear perfume you'd be recognized as gay or strange. That all ended this year, I thought deeply on the beginning of this year and started to no longer care what people think of me no more, I expanded on the idea that I will do what I love best and wear what I love and I'm not gonna let anyone or the world stop me from doing so, I look back at cologne and I don't really like the musty smell it has, like this guy says, like Clorox, leathery, or deep smell to it, I like the perfume smell cause I love the sweet smell it has to it like cake, strawberrys, vanilla, flower like smell to them. So now I wear perfume proudly wherever I roam to even when I'm at work. It makes me feel absolutely proud and confident that I can finally be my true self. Not to mention this is off topic but I even like the material of some hoodies and sweaters females have since guys hoodies and sweaters are always so rough and bland. I look at the female sweaters and hoodies and they are so damn comfy especially the soft silk material they have. All in all what I'm saying is wear what you want to wear and if you feel comfortable in that then wear it! Fuck everyone else that think otherwise love yourself because life is too short to be obeying what others think of you.

When your right, your right!! It’s insecurity and ego. The majority of what I wear is marketed as either unisex or towards women. When I go into a department store I honestly don’t even go in the “men’s” area. I find much more variety over in the women’s area. I have found that just about everything at the men’s counter all smells the same and there really isn’t much uniqueness..I’m very comfortable wearing perfume marketed towards women. Shalimar, Obsession (for women), lots of Chanel’s offerings (19, Chance Eau Fraiche, Cristalle Vert, Coromandel), Miller Harris L’Air de Rien... Why not? I think lots of perfumes marketed as feminine are above gender questions. But the social insecurity matter is hard to overcome. I think we learn to judge since birth, but we are not taught how to accept judgment. So we avoid any situation where we could be judged. Like wearing any perfume we want.

There's nothing sexier than a man who is confident enough to wear whatever he wants. The same thing applies for women I believe. This men/women distinction exists only in designer fragrances and not for all of them. I think this is why in my fragrance journey I started with Hermès fragrances. I like also that in private collections and niche they don't make this men/women separation. A few years ago I was trying some fragrances in the "men" department and the sale assistant confessed me that he had more women wearing Dior Homme than men 😁 I must say that I have some "men" fragrances by Guerlain on my wishlist ❤ I think this is just a matter of taste and there are perfumes that I prefer on men like Rose Barbare and the original Shalimar. I can definitely see a man wearing Chanel n°5 ! 😉

Thank you for this, Eugen. The perfume community needs this. Everyone does actually. I agree with everything you said here and I’ve felt this way for quite some time now. I almost exclusively wear women’s perfume now. Not only because they typically don’t smell like a “girly” perfume and they actually smell unisex, but because I wear what I like. Also, a lot of women’s perfumes of the past smell much more “masculine” than the shit that’s out today. If someone tells me I smell like a girl, so what? Art is art, it has no gender and I can wear whatever I want regardless of people’s opinions. Now pass me my Sauvage.

At a flex desk I was working at, there were some perfume testers lying in the drawers. One was blue, one was pink. They were both very distinct - the pink one was flowery and long lasting. The blue one was very fresh, reminded me of the sea and summer. I looked at the text - said “ Versace Dylan Turqouise” . Went ahead and bought a little bottle. Found out later it’s for women, but really couldn’t care less. It smells great and gives me wonderful memories of past vacations. Ps: the other one was Lancôme’s “La Vie est belle”. I liked that one too! XD

I am in the midst of my tenure at the retailer Bath & Body Works I will sometimes wear a woman’s perfume to market it to my customer clientele I am always showing and demoing so many so many woman’s scents that by the time I am done working I smell like it anyway especially the seasonal sweet ones that we get during holidays like our pumpkin and sugar cookie scents although there is nothing like are men’s scents I love them also especially the woods pine and ocean kind of scents so amazing.

Interesting topic. Dior Poison was my guilty pleasure ages ago and I was so afraid to wear it. All thanks to niche "unisex" fragrances I don't think too much about it, except on heavy tuberose/jasmine and rose fragrances. Most Italian males never had issues with wearing pastel colours, expressing their emotions and appreciating great artistic fragrances.

yea, i had a same thoughts/feelings ... as arabians say: in perfumery there´s no male/female thing ... it´s rather unisex ... unisex is the best label ... like noir de noir, black orchid - can be used by both .. depends on everybody´s taste

If you only wear perfume marketed to your gender you are still looking at it as a utility and are not appreciating it as a discipline of art. I’m happy there are guys like you that have an interest in the big picture!

When I was in high school, I borrowed (stole) my stepdad's Aspen for Men... wore it constantly. I loved it.. I got made fun of all the time for wearing a men's fragrance, but I didn't care. I didn't really wear much after college and for many years. I was introduced to this amazing, extended world a couple years ago. I wear what I want to wear, the BF wears what he wants to wear... neither of us care about the "section" we pick them up from. We share so many bottles now. All I care about is if I smell good... and I tell you.. I smell good in a lot of "male" fragrances.

For me you are a person who have a taste and passion about how to enjoy the life. You know what you want and what to do. It’s rare to see someone who had enthusiast on a fragrances, That one day he could described about fragrances and suddenly he could light on the torch like a pro, and burned perfume clones ended up with yelling ( i suspect you had a 6G certification ) 😁

Extremely well said Eugen. Honestly, I think the bigger issues are that for some reason, things relating to women somehow equate to weakness and that calling someone a homosexual is offensive. Because neither of those things are true 🤷‍♀️ Like you said, the comments people make say much more about them than it does about you. Always great to hear your thoughts, buddy 💜

Good for you brother, I respect that stance. I think it’s fine men wearing perfume over what’s traditionally thought of as men’s cologne. My grandpa would always wear my grandmothers perfume every Sunday for church because he loved it. He was a decorated war veteran. Maybe thats why my mind is open to it. My grandpa was my hero. And he had 12 children and highly doubt he ever questioned his sexuality... Personally I enjoy a floral scent also. 🤙🏽🤙🏽 The idea of what’s considered male or female is a social construct way out of date. The Bible describes Gods angels as being without gender at all. We make our assumptions of course because that’s what humans do. Judge... Find your tribe but also, open minds like you have with your Video.... And continue to be who you are. 😏🤙🏽...

I wear Shalimar, Mitsouko, and Portrait of a Lady with no issue. I’m confident in my masculinity and wear what I enjoy on me. Having said that, there are certainly fragrances I’d consider “too feminine” for me, but not because I don’t enjoy them, but because I prefer them on my wife.

Same here. I love natural aromas, flowers, herbs, woods, etc. Female fragrances, specially the classic ones, tend to be more interesting, have more variety when it comes to notes and I really consider them way more attractive to my nose. I have almost 50/50 in my wardrobe and so far no one has ever told me I smell like a woman. And even if someone would ever say that, I just wouldn’t care. I wear what I like, whatever suits me and makes me feel good. My dad used to steal my mom’s Chanel N5 and he smelled amazing. My granny a very elegant lady used to wear my Egoïste and that way I lost my prejudices and fears about fragrance labels. As a very dear fragrance expert once told me, wear what you like and not what they tell you. Times and mentality change and that’s great. Great video!

Well said, Eugene. Four years ago, I was averse to women’s perfume, mainly because of my socialization. It’s how I was raised. Then along came niche fragrances, many with more feminine profiles-and I found myself enjoying them. Reflection Man. Ajmal Rose Wood. Etc. I must credit you to opening up my mind about the feminine-marketed Chanels such as No.5 and Coco; I decided what the hell, let’s try it...and sure enough, I’m a fan now. If a fragrance makes me feel good I’m all game. My favorite “female” frag of all time is Mugler Angel EDP. It transports me to a blissful place every time.

It's alright to wear any perfume men, women, animal, alien ect. as long as you feel comfortable. My daily driver was Paco Rabanne 1 Million until I received Chanel samples while buying it and I instantly felt in love with the scent. Now I'm wearing Chanel and get compliments from males and females.

I think men's fragrances are simpler than women's ones. The same goes with clothing, however , a woman can wear trousers but I do not see a man wearing a skirt. Therefore, it is more acceptable for a woman to wear aftershave than for a man to wear perfumes. In the end I think people do not care that much anyway and if a man feels comfortable wearing feminine fragrance, why not?

I own both “men’s” and “women’s” perfumes, although the former are never really “men’s men’s”, they are strong but not screamingly so. I grew up in my grandparents’ garden, where I learnt how to love flowers and nature, so I always prefer a floral perfume to a traditionally masculine one.

I had this revelation a few years ago. I realised that when I was shopping for fragrances for the men in my life, I was always looking for the ones that leaned towards the more traditionally 'feminine' scents. I'd sniff and sniff and sniff, getting knocked around by various versions of petrol mixed with cat piss, until suddenly I'd land on a floriental scent and I'd sigh in delight. Pondering that led me then wondering, if I like men's scents that smell like women's scents, why not just buy those? I suggested to a boyfriend who wasn't hung up on what it means to be a 'man' to try my Poeme, and it smelled DIVINE on him. Just gorgeous. He got so many compliments, but caused confusion and consternation when he would say what he was wearing. Most people just could not get their heads around a man smelling so damn good in a 'womens' fragrance.

And to think in this day and age some people STILL think this way. U live what u were taught as a child. I have a perfume collection and I wear both men and women’s. The oils in our body can transform any scent and I get lots of compliments when I wear my men’s cologne. Most people are shocked when I say it’s a men’s cologne. What I’m trying to say is u do u. Id be happy if u were my husband then I’d just use your perfume lol. Be blessed!😊

OMG why would anyone judge you (or anyone) for wearing ANY kind of perfume?? I honestly don't think perfumers intended to create these masterpieces for a specific gender... Mitsouko..! I never even knew that was a woman's perfume... I bought it when I was young and found out years later it was for "women".. Also, the original Addict by Dior... I have worn that forever... I find it more masculine but I think we can wear anything we like... As far as you being or not being gay, I have only started watching your channel a few months ago and thought you mentioned a wife.. I was mildly disappointed only because I found you stunningly handsome haha! But I find it really refreshing that any guy: straight, gay or whatever just buys and uses any fragrance he likes... I'm POSITIVE the creators of these fragrances do not have serious intentions about who wants to enjoy them... Thanks for making this.. You're great.. If you're ever in Taiwan, come by and you can try on some of my VINTAGE Chanel Pour Monsieur... I've got bottles from 1958 (60s, 80s and 90s as well... They have perceivable differences!) on up... Happy to be your subscriber... Really hope you don't have followers that would judge for something so ridiculous.. Life is short! Enjoy it :)

I am male and have this addiction to Imari perfume by Avon. Although it is discontinued... it is still relatively easy to find on Ebay or even Amazon. I have went through at least 25-bottles over the past years and I even use it as room spray. The scent just draws-me-in and gives me such a mental boost. I have hundreds of bottles of men's cologne and out of those maybe one or two that I can call "my favorites". Men's cologne these days all smell like freshly mowed grass and I hate that smell...actually it bothers my allergies......as does most of the men's cologne that I own. This past year I actually started spraying myself with Imari when I go-out in public. If women choose a perfume because she likes the scent....what makes her think that men will too? Same goes for men who choose a cologne thinking that it will attract women. I've ordered many samples from Le Labo's and I dislike each one. The same with several designer colognes and from Swiss Arabia....not one has impressed me.

Wonderful video Eugen, did you know that pink used to be a boy's colour and blue used to be a girl's colour? It was thought that because pink is closer to red, it represents a more masculine colour (whatever that means). It goes to show you that all of these "rules" are completely made up.
