I think it's OK to Gender fragrances as I do like the bottles as part of my buying a fragrance and I find unisex fragrances typically have boring packaging. I buy whatever I like regardless of who it's marketed to. My husband wears my fragrances and they never smell the same on him as me anyway. He doesn't care about genders at all when it comes to fragrance, probably because has five sisters. Also, no one would believe a 6ft 3 inch man is wearing Holiday Nights by Jessica Simpson. LOL! i personally find it alluring when a man is confident enough to rock what he likes. Male chypre, fougere's, and aquatics are almost always better than female versions. I also think the compulsive buying nature of women has caused some of this issue of lackluster scents. A great deal of women will buy a fragrance because of the name and men tend to be a lot more picky. Perfumers seam to have to really bring it when making a male marketed scent or it'll go straight to the bargain bin. Versace has had some horrible duds for ladies but women still buy it because it's Versace. I mean Bright Crystal smells like something Paris Hilton made for $9.99. and don't even get me started on the ladies version of Dylan Blue. 🥱😴

Personally I don't think fragrance has a gender , but I do think it has personality. From soft and unassuming, to aggressive and rugged and everything in between. It's all just perfume in a vat until the marketing team decide on who they want to sell it to and how anyway. Just like food , if it tastes good. I eat it. If it sounds good , I listen to it. If it looks good ,I watch it. Fantastic topic and look forward to everyone's thoughts 🙏

What's particularly interesting is that what scents we associate with each gender changes over time. I could definitely see some vintage female-marketed chypres like Aromatics Elixir (1970s) being rebranded and released to men today. Bandit by Robert Piguet (1940s) was female targeted and its a strong, rugged oak moss infused leather- definitely something I associate with masculine targeted scents!

I think every fragrance can be unisex. Lots of people wear fragrances marketed for the opposite sex. My mom used to wear my Le Male 25 plus years ago. You only have to look at how many more flower based fragrances are marketed for men to see the cross over. I like Iris and Rose, also a few other flowers. Many people I know look at men who own a lot of fragrances as not being ‘normal’. That is the sort of stereo typing that started many many years ago, maybe it’s because I was from a more working class background. Love your channel JC, you are an inspiration and inspired me to start my own channel. Keep up the good work.

I went to the shop and smelled some women's perfumes a couple of days ago because I want to start wearing what I like rather than what some marketing guy wants to sell me. I really liked the Britney Spears Fantasy. I ended up finding the same perfume online for half the price, so I ordered that yesterday. And I read some reviews and people also mentioned liking Viva la juicy, so I ordered one of those too and am hoping I will like it. It will be interesting to see if people have a different reaction to me when I start wearing those. No doubt I'm going to end up with a collection of women's perfumes soon. Regardless of what other people think, I'm going to smell good.

Thanks for doing this video, Mr. Justin! I'll say this...I'm comfortable wearing women's marketed fragrances as long as they carry some masculine components to it. For instance, I don't mind wearing fragrances like Lyric Man, Intense Cafe, Rose Arabia Almond, and Feve Deliceuse. However, I must say that I do have my limits. I am not comfortable wearing Flowerbomb or Decadence by Marc Jacobs. I think it is all about knowing your limits.

My favorite are Fragrance Houses that don’t gender their fragrances at all, and just let each individual decide what they enjoy. For example Serge Lutens. I have purchased Mens fragrances as well, and have been complimented on them by Men when I wear them - lol! Who cares! 😀

Yes! Thank you! I would love to see a world where more perfume houses simply make the scents they’d like us to experience, and say nothing else. If we want to go as far as learning the contained notes, we can go find them. But let’s get rid of preconceived notions. Subconscious biases. These things are simply in place to generate profit.

There is some historical and physiological context regarding the habituated associations we have with certain smells, but I absolutely agree that all fragrances are essentially genderless. In fact, there is an incredibly diverse psychology surrounding the topic, that I feel may have a great deal to do with the innate characteristics of the object providing the scent. Leather is tough and protective, whereas flowers are delicate and colourful. Wood and vetiver are dirty and rooted, whereas sweet fruits denote cyclical fertility and reproduction. Smoke implies burning and destruction whereas foods imply creation, renewal and community, and so on. But you know how it is. With enough reinforcement, you can make people believe pretty much anything. Probably explains why Angel still brings a smile to my face to this very day. Nummy nummy num.

I think it's more about you as a person. A large, rugged man may not look like he couldn't pull off floral fragrances, but that alone would make him wearing it all the more intriguing. Same applies for women wearing a dark, musky scent. I personally love the idea of women wearing a darker scent. Dependent upon the confidence you have when wearing a scent will dictate how well you can pull it off. Watched a video where a man was talking about the fact that the idea of gendered fragrances doesn't exist in the middle east, which I found fascinating. Makes sense also, as I've smelt many women from that region of the world wearing Oud, incense and rich resin fragrances. My two pence on the discussion. Great video JC.

Sarah Jessica Parker's "Lovely" is marketed for women but smells fantastic on a man. I first smelled it on a guy working as a UPS delivery man who said he "stole" it from his wife. I have to ask him what was he wearing. It's amazing that he remembered the name of the perfume. I immediately ordered it on line and I am not disappointed. Scents have no gender. It's all marketing. Wear whatever you like. There are no "perfume police" that will arrest you if you wear a scent that appeals to you. The only rule is dab or spray in moderation.

I agree earthly smells by themselves are not particular to a man or woman. Whenever this subject comes up I always see people blame the marketing of companies.. But I don't think we make gender associations just because of the marketing we've been subjected to. Gender roles were around before the markets ever existed. I think certain scents do have a nature.. as do people. And the nature of a lot of scents do seem to match the nature of the given gender. But people can definitely wear what they want.

I love oriental fragrances, which sometimes mean certain are a bit more masculine (for men), which had me buying, for example 1 Million (although I layer it with Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue) and Prada Luna Rossa Sport, but also citrusy and aquatic ones as well, Acqua di Giò on that part (layered with Because It’s You by Emporio Armani), but then there are the unisex fragrances - (My old classic signature scent that I wore during my teens, just recently having added back in my collection) CK One by Calvin Klein, Gypsy Water, Tinharé (also recently added), the first one being citrus aromatic, and the two following a mix of woody, floral, and musky. A big variation in all categories, even in women’s (an oriental one being an old limited edition bottle of Hypnotic Poison Diable Rouge by Dior). I also, just last week, bought Narciso Rodriguez For Her, and have layered it with CK One, and on me it works. Not many can pull off layering, though, since you need the nose and body chemistry to be able to see which notes make a great combination, but it definitely not only creates a better version of the fragrance, but makes it even more unique, since you take two (or even three, like I once did) fragrances and mix all the different notes together, making it like a big deliciousness of scents - Even more addictive ones than one fragrance would on its own 🙈 Kind of like getting overwhelmed by all the emotions you get when you sniff your wrists. If you’re intrigued, and you want to try it out, why not give it a go, and see if you find two (one men’s + women’s, unisex + women’s, or even 2 men’s) that could potentially help give you a unique signature scent - But if it doesn’t work, then at least you can cross out ‘Layering fragrances’ on your ‘To-Do’ list 🙈☺️

Really good content and I really enjoyed your take on the classic theme 'top unisex or top female perfumes'! I think it's not something it's discussed very often in videos. 👏 Although, I have spent some time thinking and searching about social constructs, socially given roles on men/women, I myself follow these stereotypes more often than I would like. For instance, with perfumes I always asked myself 'how come don't I prefer the sweet and gourmands perfumes since I'm a woman?'..or in the past some times I wore unisex perfumes that leaned towards masculine and some times if someone commented "oh I don't know (about the perfume) it smells masculine, is it a womans perfume?" Or "I wouldnt wear it, I it reminds me a mans perfume", I felt a little weird. Social contructs and stereotypic gender behaviors go beyond our research and knowing..we learn them and get used to them from the minute we are born as we grow old. Of course, perfume or notes doesn't have gender but I think most of us need some work in putting this in practice in our daily behaviors without having to guess about it twice!

You made some very good points. Social constructs are deeply imbedded in our psyches, and it is extremely difficult to disregard them. And you said it well, it is a "practice". We can start by wearing "gender bending" fragrances at home first, find comfort in them, and then try wearing them out a little at a time...and hardest part of all: if there are people who choose not to try to understand your expression, or even criticize you for it...they may not be great people to keep close to you!

@@stayfreshproductions oh! That could be a useful idea..i'll begin wearing them at home to get used to them. Thank you! The last thing you said was very important for me. Of course anyone may be influenced by those stereotypes so much that anything beyond their knowing is something weird, bad, or even 'not natural'. And of course I got to keep that in mind if someone make such a comment but first of all I need to keep myself safe (physically and psychologically). I always keep in mind that "what Susie says of Sally, says more about Susie than of Sally". No need for negative energy in our lives. 😊

Thanks for making this video, your thoughts were beautifully articulated. I think everyone should wear what they want. Perfume is generally genderless ingredients in a flacon and at the end of the day, it is marketing that differentiates what's pour femme and what's pour homme. However for most people, certain ingredients/scents are psychologically not viewed as befitting for a lady. I have in fact gotten the side-eye and snide comments from some guys on certain "unisex" fragrances I've worn in the past. Now, I wear what I want when I'm by myself and "feminine" fragrances when I'm in the company of certain others 😊... It is what it is... Thanks again🙏🏾🙏🏾 for doing this video, I have fragrances to sample and to add to my to-buy list ☺️. Sorry for the lengthy treatise. BTW, your pronunciation of my name was👌🏾👌🏾

Glad I got your name right! :) Thanks for sharing your personal experience. Its so silly to me that other people might care that we smell "fem" or "masc". The same could be said about clothing. If I saw a woman wearing a tailored suit and tie, sure it would be striking at first, but I would more than appreciate that they are wearing something that suits what they're trying to convey about their personality on that day. And I'm sure they would look great doing it! Just like men can still smell great wearing "fem" perfumes.

To make the point that fragrances don't have a gender I always use the analogy to food. Because our sense of smell is responsible for about 80% of what we taste, we cannot set gender in the food we eat. No one can say that a pizza or a burger is feminine or masculine but I guess if some company starts to market food with gender it can be successful and if the industry adapts that concept, in the long run, it could change the way we, as a society, look at food with some gender difference.

I don't let how a fragrance is marketed stop me from wearing a fragrance, entirely. However, I do consider who I'm going to be around, and what their take on my "gender bending" fragrance will be before I spray it . . . . sometimes. If I just don't have the energy to hear it that day, I will conform to their expectations. If I don't care, then I will wear what I want. But, there are some accords - such as aquatic ones, or scents that contain mint - that just don't appear as often in fragrances marketed as feminine. And, especially in extreme heat, those things are just much more appealing. Or, I have yet to find a femme marketed fragrance that has a mango note as pretty as the one in Timbuktu. (There may be one; but, the joy is in the search.)

Most of my perfumes are absolutely unisex, and I own and enjoy some that are apparently ‘for women’ like Black Orchid for example. To be honest I’m still undecided about how to rationalise my own attitude towards gendering in perfumery beyond a simple do like it don’t like it approach. There’s no denying that some scents conjure up an image of beautiful soft and clean unblemished skin to use that imagery, and others have a rugged, unshaven or even just a strong and confident vibe about them, all of which may trigger associations from one’s past experiences going all the way back to childhood, and thus placing it on the gender spectrum one way or another. It’s good to see people experimenting however, but by the same token I fully respect anyone who feels they’d rather stick to the gender separation, just like I wouldn’t dream of criticising a woman who wouldn’t be seen dead in a pair of pants. I guess the simple answer really is to wear whatever you like...
