You can break 80 within a couple months if you just work on short game and play a bunch. Take it easy on the swing lessons. You hit the ball fine now

2 keys I think that would get you to improve considerably without much effort: 1) Swing to a finish position and hold it for 2 seconds for every shot, putt, chip, driver, everything - consciously at first but it will become natural as your convictions for the shots become stronger. 2) Your chipping set-up looks like you are about to hit a 100 yard shot. The set-up for short shots should be more compact, closer to the body, I'd recommend just watching some pro golf and noting the differences between what you do and what they do - not so much the shots, but the body language, the attitude, the set-up etc.

You are one of us no doubt. Your swing is good enough to break 85 but you are way inside your head. The course is not where you work on your swing. All the swing thoughts should happen during practice and when you are on the course think about playing the course with whatever swing you have that day.

I've been golfing seriously for about a year and throughout my struggles I have come to the conclusion that putting is the most crucial aspect of the game. You can bomb a great drive, or stick an approach... but if you can't putt, you're adding so many unnecessary strokes. Driver is second.

Have you considered getting a Garmin watch (or some other variety of golf-focused watch)... Range finders are fine, but they take time. It is really easy to just look at your wrist to figure out distances to the center of the green. I ended up returning my range finder after I got my S60... one of my best golf purchases.

Jerome.. here’s a tip from a 7 handicap… @9:17 you tee’d the ball up on the left side of the tee box and the hole is to the left. You have trees blocking your angle to the fairway unless you hit a big slinging draw… On holes like this you want to tee up on the opposite side of trouble (right side by the right tee marker here) to give yourself the best angle to the fairway. Golf is hard. Don’t make it harder than it needs to be!

Just finished this. Great content. I would love to hear from your short game coach how you can simulate all the variables that shape short game when practicing outside the course…especially if your range has no short game area. Chipping off a mat doesn’t translate in my experience v driver and irons which seem easier to work on at the range or just beating balls. Any practice strategies for recreating short game course conditions (slope; lie; rough; pin placement; wind; sand, etc) would be appreciated. For example…from your video… how would you get comfortable on hard pan.

I have a couple questions for you, first is there somewhere I can see the names of all the coaches you have been able to work with so far? And second how many times are you actually playing golf each week? And how many hours on the driving range each week? If you have posted this info somewhere already, please point me to it, I'm curious how much time you have invested to get to an 85 in 8 1/2 months. Really impressive.

Still such a head case. Just play, enjoy your time on the course, forget the last shot, forget the last hole, one shot at a time. Swing easy, you’re off balance trying to crush everything, no tempo no rhythm. You say “worst hole ever” when you still have a chance to get up and down and save bogey. Such a self defeating attitude is gonna hold you back. Don’t even track your score just count up the strokes after each hole and at the end of the round count up the total. Need to embrace Zen golf! Try this for your putting - Stop looking at the ball and the hole when you're over the shot, purely focus on the putter moving cleanly through the centre line that you're trying to hit along, it might not work for everyone, but as soon as I started doing this I hit nearly every single put with solid contact and line, it's a very different approach to what most people are naturally doing. Lastly, just focus on having a firm structure, very little wrists of arms involved and just rocking the shoulder back and forth, always focusing on getting that putter (not the ball) to move smoothly through the line.

Great vid dude... I'm in the same boat as you... I started my golf journey last year and decided that I really want to get good at golf quickly so I've been practicing nearly everyday. I went a different route though with my swing style... 6 or 7 months ago I switched to the Single plane swing which has helped me tremendously, allowing me to break 100 and consistently shoot scores in the mid to low 90s with my best score being an 87. My goal this year is to break 85 as well which really boils down to consistent striking and a really good short game so I plan on focusing a lot more time on chipping / putting. I think it is very possible as long as you keep practicing daily. I've already surpassed the skill levels of several friend that have been playing for years so I believe I can break 85 and maybe even 80 by the end of this year hopefully!

And it’s about being honest with your game, so to get an accurate honest round he needs to include penalties. Most players use the rule to play, but there are a rules that apply for stroke play, or match play, but the majority are for the game of golf, but as recreational players, the rules are ignored unless your in a tournament/ match or competing/ betting, that’s when everyone plays by the rules, for an advantage/ to win, and there are people who will call you out for any infraction.

You should work on your preshot routine. You are still a beginner, so its totally normal that your technique falls apart from time to time during the round. The Greg Norman Drill seem to work for you, so why not doing it before every single shot?

Making progress, ignore the naysayers! Perhaps you could do an episode with a real caddie or have your next lesson an “on the course” playing lesson with your HOF coach. Keep putting in the work and it’ll pay off!

I disagree with all the people saying you need to play more rounds, at least at this point of your game (check the Pyramid of Learning by Pete Cowen, he says the same thing). It's obvious you have been focusing mostly on your long game, where most good teachers recommend to spend most of your time on short game in the beginning, up until you're fairly comfortable and confident in your short game. I think you would greatly benefit from spending at least 60% of your practice time on short game, hitting alot of different chip and pitch shots from different distances from different lies. As short game keeps the weight on the lead foot this will likely help your long game as well (in a similar way as your Greg Norman drill). A decent short game will also take the pressure of your long game, allowing you to swing more relaxed and controlled (as opposed to your full power sends).

You need to do a "within 100 yards" training session, and this is coming from a 29 handicapper - you could break 80 if you master that i would bet.

Think of practising getting to scratch golf more like how you would get good at bouldering / or rock climbing. You would 'not' spend weeks perfecting pull, ups squats technique and then go to a climbing wall or rock face and 'expect' you can climb to the top flawlessly (par even), you are likely falling many times say (after 24+ times over par). The likelihood of succeeding in fewer attempts probably more proportional to your experience rather than max fitness and less experience... if that makes sense. Your current routine is more like how you would get good at shooting bball 3pointers if you were trying to win the NBA all star 3 point contest. If you hit 50 3s in a row in practice with x amount of jump, y amount of follow through ball release at the top of my jump surely in the contest can hit 15 in a row with the exact same technique.
