Can Cold Showers Actually Change Your Life?

Many people swear that a cold shower every morning has the power to change your life, and improve your health- but can this be proved by science? Join us as Hank Green dives into the world of cold showers and discusses whether these claims hold water.

I find cold showers nice because they throw me into the present. Sometimes I'll be really out of it and not really pay attention to the world, half paying attention to what is happening right now and continually thinking or worrying. I think it really works well with meditation.

(I have a bad habit of thinking A LOT all the time, everywhere, even in bed.) 3. Learn how to stay calm and adjust my breathing in uncomfortable situation. 4. I feel less hesitant to decide something. (Again, the overthinking me) 5. Somehow many problems I encounter during a day are less ... fearsome to me. As a multi business owner and someone who deals with ADHD on a daily basis, I can definitely say that a warm shower that turns very cold towards the end absolutely makes a significant difference in my productivity and attitude following. This also gives you the same boost as doing laundry or making your bed as it’s a small accomplish for many people. Overall I would definitely recommend that people give this a shot for a few weeks and see how they feel. It’s definitely not some sort of magic fix all but it is one of the many pieces to a healthy lifestyle and the beginning of a good day.

I’ve been doing cold showers for 8 days straight now and this is the process I use. I start with 1 song. Most songs are 3-5 minutes. This first song is not freezing cold but it’s still cold. The next song that plays is freezing cold. Again 3-5 minutes. It’s brutal but after about the 2 minute mark it stops feeling so cold and you adjust. These are the affirmations I use: “Everything worth having in life comes after following difficult times” so to get through the cold shower I reap the benefits. You do feel amazing afterwards. Also, i just keep telling myself this is who I am now. And I make it through and I feel awake, energized, and better off afterwards.

Just an anecdote, but it works for me. I've got dysthymia, and have for most of my life. On top of the mood and emotion issues and lack of affect, my senses are dulled. I see things, and could tell you if say, a wall had a texture or pattern to it if you asked me afterwards, but it's almost like I'm not paying attention to it and my brain fuzzes it out. Similarly I don't really ever smell anything unless it's a very strong smell close by. After taking a shower I'll switch the water to cold and stand in it, usually letting it run down my back and shoulders, for about five minutes. Doing so brings my sense of smell back entirely (or as entirely as I remember ever having), and sharpens my vision so I'm more immediately aware of details. It also makes me feel more alert and focused and increases my affect. I can't say it does anything for my ability to actually feel emotions internally though, nor does it boost my motivation. It usually lasts for four or five hours, I'd say. I doubt it would be a treatment for depression on its own, but it's a really cheap way to buy yourself a few hours free of most of the symptoms.

  • @mimsydreams

Been taking them since April of this year. -The feeling after the shower is great -Teaches discipline -Wakes you up -Face appearance looks better -Helps with weight lost -Improves/increases testosterone levels -Hair is softer (let it dry first if you plan to brush it) The only con I’ve noticed is if you take a cold shower at night, you’ll have a hard time sleeping-& maybe a few runny noses but that’s all! It’s starting to cool up during this time of the year, so the baths are gonna be a little challenging. However that’ll teach us cold shower enthusiasts even more discipline 😈

As someone who takes cold showers daily I can say that it absolutely boosts mood, confidence and hapiness for sure. I don't know for certain about things like immune system and such but in the case of myself I feel much more healthy, fit, strong and ressistent to the cold in general. That was my observation, I'm swiss and in switzerland cold showers are rather ass freezingly cold. Idk if people consider cold showers when you turn a bit cold but I consider cold showers when you turn to max cold, just to put in perspective what kind of benefits I witnessed.

Dr wants me to exercise and lose weight but my feet mostly, legs and arms are sore after work and I just want to decompress. About 12 years ago I gave up bicycling everywhere for 2 years because of a bad kidney stone. Since then I've gained 65lbs. I went from 220 to 190 bicycling and 12 years later am up to 255. Bicycling was great to burn stress before and after work as well as lose weight.

It is the main reason why we store extra body fat, to use as fuel if nothing else is available only when those reserves have been completed will your body start using muscles tissue to keep it's core alive. for a healthy person that would take up to like a few weeks depending on the amount of fat someone has.

After taking cold showers for about 4 years, I can only recommend it, although it was pretty brutal at the beginning (I've started at january) It has shifted from jumping, heavy breathing and lauging finished with somehow superman-like glassy skin feeling to routine in less than 3 months, so I think it's not that bad, when you realize, that all those feelings would eventually pass away, and you will even miss them in the future. And benefits? I was ill abou 4-6 times per year and it has changed pretty rapidly (First time I've got ill was about month after taking the showers, but it was mine mistake to go out with wet hair in february...) but after that initial illness, it has shifted to stable one illness per year, what I think is incredible, and what's more I can go for a walk in a t-shirt when it's 15°C or jump into cold water of spa pools, that everyone else is afraid of, and it feels like having a personal pool... Quite a difference, when I compare it to myself 5 years ago, when I was trembling at swimming pools, when it was 30 degrees Celsius outside...

Come to think of it, we got a small hot tub in January. My husband and I would go sip some coffee in the hot tub for a few minutes before getting ready for work. It was freezing cold and getting into the hot tub really woke me up. The water felt amazing and what I noticed was getting out of the hot tub into the cold just to grab my towel and go back inside, something about it changed how I felt each day. I was going through a hard time and looking back, I felt better.

my best hypothesis is that “cold” temperatures makes it easy for energy to flow based on superconductivity, but the human body associates cold with death and thus reacts negatively to it. i think the reason we have monks in the mountain is breaking that fear of cold does open the body to a relative level of comfort in a discomforting way, so instead of tensing up in temperature shifts(knowingly or unknowingly) we get pre acclimated and act more efficiently, saving energy and feeling as if we altered something, when its more akin to lessening some background app or something maybe lol

"feeling as if we altered something, when its more akin to lessening some background app or something" - which means something WAS ALTERED, maybe more on a mental level, but the shower did alter something, just altered it temporarily. but maybe long enough for certain people to benefit.....

Something I noticed is that if I have anxiety or I’m having a bad day or I’m feeling down, and I step into a cold shower, the cold hurts so bad and I start to panic, and I have to calm myself down and it’s not easy. I barely get through the shower and I’m out of breath the entire time. The shower only lasts like a minute or two. But on days where I’m feeling like my best self, the cold shower feels comfortable, refreshing, and I love every second of it. I actually stay in them for up to ten minutes sometimes.

Firstly, it is a good discipline which reminds me not to be frightened of unpleasant tasks: once begun they are easier than they seem. Secondly, they are incredibly refreshing and invigorating; I leave in a good mood and more prepared to face the day. Thirdly, I swear that my skin feels vastly better.

I took cold showers for a year , and it has drastically improved my immune system. Before taking cold showers I was getting a fever Avery 2 to 3 weeks, and reason that the people who take warm showers have a better immune system is because hot temperatures do increase the straight of the immune but only temperary . When exposing yourself to cold makes your body think that you may catch a pathogen. And it’s normal to have a cold at the end of it sometimes and it actually makes your immune system stronger . It maybe hard for the first days or weeks to have a cold shower , but as you get use to them you get an extra boost of testosterone that lowers the concentration of the stress hormone cortisol which lowers your immune system
