As a software developer, I can see how decisions and even mindstates can be produced as result of the brain. The part that makes it difficult is that we are living in the opposite way: we are living in the virtual world and manipulating the physical world, instead of calculating based upon the bits and bytes. We also seem to have a choice, instead of being forced to go one limited way.

It was ahead of its time and still is!

Intelligence and Consciousness often get confused. You can be very unintelligent, and at the same time as conscious as it gets. We can create artificial intelligence, but we may not be able to create artificial consciousness. Intelligence in a computer can be reduced down to it's cpu and the patterns in it's transistors, just like intelligence in a human can be reduced down to the brain. Consciousness is different. We have never observed another person's experience of seeing the color red, so we can't even begin to explain it. Scientists will adamantly disagree with any claim that consciousness is not "physical" in the traditional sense, because if it can't be explained by the standard model of physics, they say it can't exist, it's just "woo woo". The problem is that a majority of the universe can't be explained with the standard model, it's called "Dark Energy" and "Dark Matter". We can't directly observe Dark Matter, but we can indirectly detect it's existence by it's interaction with gravity. Similarly, we are not able to observe consciousness, except through it's interaction with the brain, and that seems to be the only way it interacts with the known observable world. I think there is plenty of room in physics and science to explore the possibility of consciousness existing as a real physical thing, that isn't explained by the standard model, when a majority of "stuff" in the universe is unexplainable and unobservable. Who's to say that consciousness isn't made of "Dark Matter" and "Dark Energy"? Dark matter may not be like traditional matter at all, particles and such. Consciousness may make up more of the Universe than matter does! Who knows...

All I can say is that I was in Japan and going to my office. Suddenly I saw a vision of my Mother (My mother wasn't there because she was in a hospital in England). It shocked me but I know about the spirit guides. She was in a coma in the UK. I couldn't get to go back to England. Indeed, she died two days after... I have had a few experiences like that. Indeed, before going to Japan, I went to the SAGB (Spiritual Association of Great Britain). There was a psychic, her name was Doris. She started her normal way of hers. Suddenly, she slept! Then a Spirit Guide talked to me for over 30 minutes... He gave me the gift of compassion...

Why did everything we need in order to exist come into being? How was all of this possible without some latent outside power to orchestrate the precise dance of elementary particles required for the creation of all the essentials of life? The great British mathematician Roger Penrose has calculated-based on only one of the hundreds of parameters of the physical universe-that the probability of the emergence of a life-giving cosmos was 1 divided by 10, raised to the power 10, and again raised to the power of 123. This is a number as close to zero as anyone has ever imagined. (The probability is much, much smaller than that of winning the Mega Millions jackpot for more days than the universe has been in existence.) The incredible fine-tuning of the universe presents the most powerful argument for the existence of an immanent creative entity we may well call God. Lacking convincing scientific evidence to the contrary, such a power may be necessary to force all the parameters we need for our existence-cosmological, physical, chemical, biological and cognitive-to be what they are. Science and religion are two sides of the same deep human impulse to understand the world, to know our place in it, and to marvel at the wonder of life and the infinite cosmos we are surrounded by. Let’s keep them that way, and not let one attempt to usurp the role of the other.

Science always stops at its frontiers: too small, too big, not observable. Subjectivity it not observable, with the notable exception of our own. We believe others, and animals, are conscious, but while this seems true, it cannot be proven. The closest science gets to a true explanation is when the description of the world consists of a beautiful mathematical theory. Maybe there, the world of mind and the world of matter show us in a subtle way that this is all a part of a single reality.

Yes it is that simple.

The most frustrating thing is that I have the answer to this, and I have experimental evidence and MOST importantly I have formulated a couple of new universal laws, which can predict and be tested. Which explain a lot more things than I ever intended-like why there’s a problem with relativistic explanation vs quantum. The most important thing is that it fits with everything. Literally once you see it you will see. Everyone says that they have the answers or that we will never find the answers but I actually know. Except I left graduate school because no one was working on what I wanted to work on in the world at that time and I couldn’t even get papers published because of no research being done. That was 20 years ago. EVERY SINGLE PREDICTION THAT I MADE CAME TRUE. The research is being done that I suggested but they are misinterpreting it. Because they don’t see the big patterns. I am currently working on a book about it, and about the milking of grant money by professional people who form harvesting networks and kick out anyone who doesn’t fit in. Well, the book itself doesn’t mention any of that crap. I don’t dwell on it. I have been turned down for grants by people who say they are looking for what I have found -having never heard my ideas and never responded to my requests to give me an hour and a blackboard. That’s just my pain. But it put me here now and I am going to do what I need to do because I have to. This stuff is about the future of human lives, not your careers. If more people perished rather than publishing so frantically and competitively like dogs snarling over food, we might actually be better off. But unaware people, self-deceived, slowly destroying everything is still destruction even if bombs never go off. So yeah I apologize for speaking ill about what they have to do. This is life. I am still grateful and I will never give up. Whatever the heights I reach in my mind, I still have a bucking bronco human mind in there. It’s slightly wild and free sometimes. Consciousness is fundamental, but in the sense it may be inevitable when living organism organized itself in the manner it has with brains(as an emerging inevitable property, but not necessarily as an accident). This is a different hypothesis than " the fundamental consciousness residing outside the physical world as we know it" idea. The one suggested by David Chalmers and has been attempting to put into scientific practice by Donald Hoffman.

I have met a small number of people claiming consciousness is an illusion . cogito ergo sum … clearly proves consciousness is the only real thing that can be proven to be real .

Without begging the question, what is the argument that establishes that there can be no free-floating thoughts? Or put differently, why do thoughts require a thinker?

@tkwtg That reduces to P therefore P. Which is a trivially true tautology and the question still remains: what is the argument that supports the claim that there can be no free-floating thoughts? There's no sin in taking the cogito as an axiom, but to claim one knows one exists with 100% certitude by virtue of Descartes cogito is problematic, to say the least. I'm not saying anything controversial here, & the literature is superabundant.

For example why do dogs have to have anxiety medications? If they don't have a consciousness or like a separization problem which is the cause of the anxiety. Even medications that calm them down for their excitement. When all owners need to do let's get their dogs out more and play and walk.

If we boil down consciousness to a common denominator it is about perceiving, processing and storing of information. This can be applied to more or less everything in universe. Information and consciousness are the two sides of the same coin. The consciousness in our brain is special but not exclusive. The ego-mind conveys the impression that consciousness is limited to the brain but in an ego-less state consciousness becomes a cosmic and meta cosmic field of infinite possibilities.

No I don’t agree consciousness can come from information but information is in the form of structure more basic.. therefore I think that consciousness has not always existed but is emerged from the information that is the persistence of the universe

Living with no internal monologue and also having aphantasia is like living conscious while being unconscious. Speaking from experience, when you are able to unlock both limitations, the world is completely different, the level of added dimension experienced is very transparent and incredible. Most people experience their life with a fully functional mind, if we could all experience life in a cognitively limited state, then restore the mind, we would have a completely different approach when interacting with people because we're all different, many of us just assume everyone is on the same wavelength.

Living with no internal monologue would be an evolutionary step backward. A worm would qualify. It has primitive consciousness and no internal dialogue.

@@ezbody I believe it, but I'm not buying ~30% of the population had this happen naturally, if you get what I mean. Living without this layer then having it accessible will give anyone a profound new understanding consciousness and the world. Without the layer, you're living out of sync in a world that is deeper than you're capable of experiencing.

I wonder if it would be bad to increase the granularity in the mind.

I believe objects like stars and black holes have consciousness, it would be interesting to study consciousness outside the human mind, that part was interesting! Because how did consciousness come to be, is only the human brain exclusive to something it might not have created. Doesn’t all the information the mind acquires come outside of its own physical nature?

@tkwtg I always think there is a reason for something ( not remotely religious) so no logical reason for black holes, stars, etc to have consciousness we have intellect to survive, I know that’s a simple explanation but haven’t the time to go deeper.

If consciousness is not brain activity how do we explain advanced dementia state or PVS or states of delirium . I think consciousness isn't just our awareness of what streams from subject-object interaction, but involves other simultaneous brain activities that we are not consciously aware of because of limitation of the phenomenon of consciousness, ie,consciousness is not just what we aware of and it isn't some sort of universal Internet that we blug in and out and our brain just decoder of that and the container of supernatural phenomenon called larger consciousness which is a religious idea at heart.

There is one aspect of consciousness I have come to accept, is there is a hard problem of consciousness.

To the direct question of "Can Brain Explain Mind?' yes it can. 'Mind' is illusory and a simple concept for conversation to depict what happens in our 'head space' ('mind-space') within our conscious field. Observing brain activity does not prove consciousness exists purely in that small space inside our head filled with 'the brain' my brain and body is more akin to a receptor and transposer of my conscious interactions some aspects of consciousness actually keeps our heart beating as there is more to fundamental consciousness than our simple ordinary awareness and 'mind-space' interactions. Motor functions are brain functions where reaction based functions and actions are more biased in consciousness. No one would categorically be able to prove what it is like to experience fundamental consciousness after they die as they would have to die to experience this (excluding NDE's as these people simply and observantly did not die) AND you cant take anyone outside of consciousness to consciously be aware of what it is they are experiencing or observing! Although interesting conversations there are many subjective (some dogma) belief biases be applied.

As we currently understand matter and energy, there is no property by which subjective experience can be explained: there must be some qualitative aspect to being. I suggest homeostasis generally has a qualitative aspect: every "thing" *feels* tension and compression, just a little bit and to no observable consequence in the abscence of feedback.

@@mediocrates3416 In my own internal empirical experiments 'subjective experience' is illusory, experience of our direct surroundings is not as long as we can identify that we are connected to 'everything' both living and not living within the postulated 'what is'. Breaking things down is subjective in it's own right due to we do not experience at those levels. Taking a drink of water for example is 'real' in terms of: if we do not drink we die (physical 'reality' meets non-physical requirement within our physical and non-physical aspects). Much of science is simple discovery and much can be illusory (unprovable as assolute 'truth') hence I only have superficial interest in the sciences. There are many aspects within our non-physical aspects (fundamental consciousness) that some dogmatic science stipulates is held within the brain, where I understand it's held within my conscious 'energetic' energy field. I hope this gives you insight into a facet of my own 'truth' and 'reality'. I wish you well :-)

In my opinion, human and machine brain are different to each other as following: Human brain can be connecting to many channels by biological terms as wirings and machine connect to limited channels by electrical terms as wirings. Human brain can process the information fast from new developments (interactions and connecting to many channels, even between human and human). Machine can process the information faster than human with all available data and AI from their brain (limited channels and interactions, not good for new developments). Human can recognize 1+1, 1.5+0.5, 1.1+0.9.....equal to 2, but machine is impossible to know by itself. Human can process the complex information with nature energy (controlled the energy resources with different approaches, but the machine must process data with limited energy as machines will doom if they are processing complex issue; Their consumable energy is limited and through the same approaches over and over again.

If you do the preceding and add to that knowledge the detailed brain architecture, networks and patterns, and add to that like knowledge of supporting structure, and then understand how all of this interconnects and communicates, then you may learn something about what is called the "mind." It's a complex undertaking, even more daunting than the human genome project by far. The project is on-going and results are coming in. What is called the "mind" is brain activity. @@honeys.kapoor2838 Excellent! I agree with most of that except I disagree with "consciousness is fundamental." We overplay consciousness. It simple is awakeness, alertness, and awareness. It is nothing mysterious. The brain creates and maintain consciousness. "You" are indeed an image produced by the brain. The "you" does not survive bodily death. There is no such separate thing as a "mind." Brain activity is what we call "mind". I could go on, but I will stop here.

The whole cannot be reduced to its parts.

Is consciousness unique to human brains? Do all brains have a capability to create this mind? Can the mind exist without the brain? Are our minds insignificant chemical reactions inside our brains? is the mind only located within the brain and no where else?

Can a study of computer CPU or memory behavior tell us substantially anything about the particular computation being executed? The answer is NO. Formally, this is a restatement of the well-known Halting Problem, and it's true even if we had a complete understanding of the algorithm, which in general we cannot extract by watching the machinery which executes the algorithm. We can gain scraps of knowledge, for example we might recognize that the processor is looping over some area of memory, but this doesn't generalize. Because such a study of computer hardware doesn't reveal the nature of a given algorithm, can we conclude that the algorithm is somehow not fully embodied in the state of the hardware in which it is evidently being carried out? Again, NO. And we know this by construction. Concerning consciousness, we don't have the advantage of construction to know incontrovertibly that it arises entirely from brain function, but that is still the most reasonable inference given what we do know. To conclude otherwise would require evidence clearly excluding such an interpretation, and we don't have it. Moreover, if we did have it, all we could conclude is that we don't know where consciousness comes from. That's fine if so. It's all right to honestly not know. But first, let's see the evidence which compels this conclusion. Even better, let's see evidence which affirmatively shows some other seat of consciousness apart from the brain. There's sure to be a Nobel Prize for anyone who can produce it.

In a dream state isn't there still brain activity recorded? Going to the person's dead there's no brain activity they're not sleeping they're not in that body anymore. They're sleeping in a different sense than what the Bible says.

Just because we can't understand how the human brain is able to generate our consciousness doesn't mean we should automatically assume that the brain does not generate our consciousness. If the brain doesn't generate our consciousness then how is it generated? This is when some people seem to let their imaginations rip and start coming up with some fairly weird ideas.

We are more aware now, how complicated mycorrhiza is, slime mold like Physarum polycephalum "have even shown an ability to learn and predict periodic unfavorable conditions in laboratory experiments". I'm on the fence with panpsychism, because we may ascribe "thinking" to processes which are a result of some patterns of nature we don't understand yet. But it seems really strange how complex behaviour emerge from "simple" networks - btw I recommend New Yorker's article "The Intelligent Plant"

@Michael Reynolds strong emergence is magic. We have no idea if it is even real (certain mathematical models hint at it, but nothing even remotely conclusive) and if it is real, there is zero evidence it is actually in play within the brain. Type identity theories are flat out self contradictory and as hoc. What are you really left with?

Not to disagree with him, however, I would like to propose that a human being would be the true consciousness detector, and the process by which that individual could discern another as having human consciousness, would be by performing spontaneous creativity. A conscious human being will be able to pick up the pattern of the spontaneous creativity, while the machine- computer(AI) won't be able to as quickly pick up the pattern from the spontaneous creativity perspective. For example, I'm testing to see if you are a human being or AI, Here are my questions to you, that have to be answered rapidly. Q1. "2+2=? Q2. Mary had a little ?, Q3. 2,4,6,8 who do we ? Q4. Row, row, row your boat ???.

Mind is a metaphor for the patterns in the brain. It is the entire project of neuroscience to use the brain to explain the mind.

This is a nonsense statement that doesn’t address the epistemic gap. Experiences and correlated brain activity are two different things. This is why having an experience doesn’t tell you what’s happening in your brain, and something happening in someone’s brain doesn’t tell you anything about what that person’s experience is like. There is no a priori entailment between the two.

I saw an episode of House TV series where they managed to see into a patient's dream the trigger of seizure that involved recognizing person embedded in memory. House episodes are often scientifically close to current technologies. I am not sure if this technology exists if it does then that means that soon we can see the subjective experience of another person. Then surely we can be sure that the mind is a construction of the brain and so it consciousness at least while dreaming. So, I don't understand why you still insist on mystifying consciousness.

What is the research on reactions to constructive criticism? Cuz people could be happy about it people could be sad about it people could be angry about it people can misunderstand it they could not feel about it at all and just dismiss it. In a sense like a mind over matter situation, or consciousness of mind. Which feeling is just? Cause it's even how the constructive criticism is given, and taken. Jesus Christ and his word is the ultimate constructive criticism. You can let it construct for good or for bad.

Ryan C / No. The stimuli, being colors or anything else, create material functions in the biological brain ( in the DNA ), and after that other future evolved functions of the brain, for example the ones associated with language, give a new material function of "defining" the first material function ( the visual one, other sensorial ones, etc ). There's no "law of logic" inside the brain because the "logic function" is created in exactly the same way like I explain above. One material function on top of the other ( or "correlated" ) on top of the other and...so on and so forth. This is how the biological world has been evolving on Earth, from bacteria to humans and in the very near future beyond humans into the artificial entities.

When you see a red object, that tells you nothing about what’s happening in your brain, and when you see someone’s brain activity correlating with red, it tells you nothing about the experience they’re having. There’s no a priori logical entailment between the two.

Regarding dreaming and why we quite quickly forget what we have dreamed, this cannot be explained by only looking at neurons in the brain. There is however a quite simple explanation if we ascribe non physicality to consciousness, namely our connection to the soul where we are privy to a much higher consciousness. Also there are many other phenomena that I could elaborate on, which cannot be explained by the brain alone.

Consciousness, interesting. What about Intellect? That which is the seed planted in the bode of the soil?

Most understand and accept the "soft problem “ while many ponder the hard-problem. Perhaps the hard problem doesn’t exit. Just as “elixir“ and “ether” have been debunked. Might the hard problem be just another one of our illusions?

Things like "ether" were always hypothetical abstractions with no direct evidence. Consciousness is not a hypothetical, it’s literally what you’re experiencing right now. For there to not be a hard problem, there couldn’t be anything it’s like to see a color, have a thought, hear a sound, etc. No one has ever given even a minor reason to believe that we are all mistaken in thinking there’s something it’s like to have an experience. Denying the hard problem is simply denying the obvious in order to put theoretical predilections before actual experience. Unless someone solves the meta-hard problem of consciousness without appealing to phenomenal consciousness, illusionist positions are baseless and absurd.

They're obviously disagreeing with that, for the most part, saying that consciousness is brain derived. With the added exception of David Chalmers idea that once the consciousness has arisen (through from the brain), it's possible it now becomes non-materialism.

If brain explains mind, and if the universe is a humongous (infinite?) brain, then some kind of god exists.

Consciousness is simply integrated focused sense of external sense, internal sense, mental activity, memory and mind linked with feelings and emotions under presence and influence of soul that gives rise of desire for leading to focused judged controlled behavioral output. Full stop. "I" is the integrated sense. Awake is presence of soul. Will talk about flow diagram sometime next.

Anatomy identifies body parts, such as arms, heart, liver, and brain. Some treat mind and brain as synonyms. I call the brain an organ, and the mind as the processes resulting from it.

If you were to study all the chemicals in the brain, would that study of the brain tell you what it is like to be a human being? And the answer is no, why? Because that is something only understood subjectively not objectively. Studying your brain won't even tell you what it is like being " you " as your own individual person. What it is like being a human being, what it is like being you as your own individual person is something understood and for it to be understood requires something that has a quality of introversion and since that is a quality of mind there lies the difference between mind and brain. Since understanding what it is like being a human being is something understood it is an experience and since you can't put an experience under a microscope and examine it experience itself transcends the physical.

Biological brain might be a machine created through the DNA naturally. Why would it be any different from an electro-mechanical robot when it comes to cognitive behaviors? Conscious or unconscious (like sleep) are merely states of awareness - like I am unaware of things that are outside my perceptive range. The question is not weather consciousness exists but instead, what is the value (benefit/purpose) of consciousness? If the answer is to to be rational, intuitive etc.,, then, if those qualia can be reproduced in robots, aren't they both alike? If alike, then, the word "artificial" ( as in AI) might be meaningless. A story written by a software and another by a human, if they both evoke the same or similar responses from an audience, then, biological humans may not be distinguishable as anything unusual, such as "it is not a machine", on the basis of consciousness. Can we not easily have a robot, convey its inner thoughts and reasonings to convince anyone, "it is aware and conscious" not an heartless machine? Can we also not give "personalities" to such robots based on their societal environments of performance? By this view, mind and body problem might be very illusory and might not be a problem to solve at all.

newton dismantled the notion of the machine by proving that everything from planets to atoms are governed by occult forces. keep repeating propaganda like a good little child.

Maybe consciousness not require causation; correlation might be enough, which could have link to quantum field.

Is consciousness eternal? Is human consciousness eternal and consciousness us Will.

Not all conscious experiences have a physical correlate. Look at people's NDE experiences, reincarnation etc.

@@BeardslapRadio There are many convincing cases of reincarnation, e.g. the boy who had been a WW2 pilot in his previous life, Mary Cockell who visited her children from her previous life. both cases have multiple witness statements to confirm their stories.

@@ezbody false. There are NDEs where people describe things in the operating room when they were unconscious, with no heart or brain activity. There is a video with a cardiovascular surgeon on KZread explaining he had a patient whom they thought was deceased, tell him about his sticky notes that only start to collect when he gets a message during surgery. No way the patient would have seen those pre operation, they were not there.

Yes, it can, Robert! "Mind" is the brain. 1) Koch is almost right. However, creating artificial consciousness doesn't necessarily require to fully understand where exactly the biological processes comprising the consciousness take place. Only the correct creation of the artificial material functions matters the most and not the exact biological locations. 2) Rodolfo is totally correct. It is that simple, Robert! By simple I mean the way to understand the real material functions that take place in the brain. It doesn't mean absolutely the way Rpdofo says but what he says is a correct direction in correctly understanding the real processes of the brain functions. 3) Ray is totally wrong. He, like many others, doesn't understand that "subjectivity" is a part of objectivity. Practically, "subjectivity" is just objectivity in a different material and functional "expression". Artificial consciousness is functionally 100% identical to the biological one and it's not hard to create it ( actually, it is relatively easy ). 4) John Searle is almost right, and makes the same mistake like Ray does in believing that the "subjectivity" is something special. It is not! "Subjectivity" material function of the brain-like "system" ( natural or artificial ) is part of the material functions called "objectivity". Consciousness is "ontologically" reducible because it is totally reproducible artificially. John makes this mistake because of too much trust in "philosophy" ( Ray makes his mistake about this by wrongly understanding the artificial processes created in a computer-"automaton"-like "system". He either forgets or doesn't know that biological material "evolution" is, in the end of the end, a "kind" of an "artificial" process also...😏 ). 5) Dave Chalmers is wrong all over the places. He is a little bit right here and there, but almost totally wrong. Consciousness and brain represent the same thing, not two different things. Fundamental laws have explanations too. There's absolutely nothing in the Universe that can't be further explained and refined in understanding. Evidently, the "possibility" of further explaining something is not on equal foot with the human capacity of correctly understanding the Universe. Too much philosophy, shoddy definitions, useless classifications, etc, Dave, without practical results, keep you on wrong paths of correctly understanding the real processes taking place in the Universe, including the ones that are part of a biological brain structure!
