I sold my Fz-1 for one of these and honestly im still quite happy. I have a 2010 rss-se5 with the passenger seat. I got it because my new Gf at the time was not comfortable on the back of such a high motorcycle. Took her for a spin on the spyder as a test drive and she was happy as a clam. If you plan to ride a lot with someone on the back, these are fantastically comfortable and still pretty dang quick. My insurance wants about $90 per year so that itself should prove how safe these things are

I think people have a problem with how people refer to them as "sportsbike" or "bikes". When in fact they are sports touring trikes that are totally in a different category than a sportsbike.

Hey Ryan, thanks for your honest review. We have a 2013 ST-L, with the "old style" motor and body/suspension. They just keep getting better all the time! You are right...most people just don't know what to "do" with a Spyder! Kind of reminds me of way back when motorcycles (Harley's?) were getting popular and had that "this is different" attitude. When we pull in to park in a public area people approach us and want to know all about the Spyder, how it is to ride, what it cost, how fast is and so forth. A really nice BMW touring bike can pull in next to us and no one asks then anything! We love day or weekend or week long trips on ours as a couple. And yes, the trunk in front, the "frunk" is mighty handy. My wife and I trade off driving, I usually have to fight for the front seat! I get lots of thumbs up and positive waves from all riders, not always from the Harley crew. Their loss, we really don't care. Enjoy!

At the end of the day, whatever suits ya is what you should get!! When I am messed up enough from age and mobility issues I will likely have one or the other. Hi Ryan, I enjoy your videos, I"ve probably seen the majority of them...and, I ride a Can-AM RT Ltd . I'm curious as to how you view them now seeing how about half a decade has passed since you recorded this. I've ridden two wheels on and off for about 60 years and switching to a Can-Am was no easy feat, especially on the RT where the operator sits more on it than in it. It took me about 5-6000 miles to become one with the machine. The learning curve is much quicker on the F3S, where the operator sits down deep inside the machine and it becomes more like driving a Go-Kart. I'm looking at an F3S today and may make a trade. For your viewers from an every single day of the year Cam-Am rider; If you're just farting around town and want the fun with little investment go with a Ryker, if you're wanting to travel the Interstates and go long distances go with an RT, if you still need adult supervision because your inner hooligan refuses to behave go with an F3S.

I bet a race prepped version with a separate front brake, retuned engine, and less electronic assistance would make for a pretty neat racing series considering the physical challenge of riding it and what I assume is a very specialised style of driving required to move it around a track quickly.

When I rode one around on a test ride the width and the fact that it limits the escape routes definitely hit me. Also you can't as easily duck around someone doing something dumb sitting in the road. I was stuck behind morons just as if I was in my car, where on the bike I'd be long gone. I took a semi-automatic F3-T out to test it and I was impressed, it shifts very nicely. I see these as a 'lazy' rider so I would totally go with the auto. The clutch on the manuals is insanely heavy, which I found bizarre. The big advantages to me were that in the 90F weather I had while testing, it was pretty sweet to flip open my helmet and completely relax when stuck at a traffic light or in crawling stop/start traffic. Two-up (the main use I was checking it for) it would be a lot easier to deal with than a bike when stuck in traffic. The brakes were very impressive, the thing stops on a dime. The wind protection on the F3-T was pretty nice and the thing has plenty of punch at 80+ with a good bit left beyond that for highway running. I ultimately got a BMW R 1200 GS/A, simply because I wasn't ready to commit to 3 wheels. If I had the spare cash and time to use one, I would definitely park an F3-T in the garage next to the GS. I liked it a lot more than I expected.

A few months later when I was healed and the insurance money came through, I test rode, then bought a Spyder in 2010 (or so)... 90,000km later I traded it for another R1200GS.. Ive done maybe 20,000km on the 1200 now Im looking again at the new Spyder... I miss riding that quirky trike.. It had to have been the most unusual thing Id ever owned.. I miss it.. I still have my F650GS for offroad camping trips, but its got me thinking.. Do I need two trailbikes..

But for an older guy like myself ( 60 ) is the spyder really hard to ride? I really don't need to ride fast anymore just want to feel out in the open on the road. I need a cane to walk so holding up a 2 wheeler is out of the question.

Hey, thanks for watching! This Spyder (the F3-S) is the most "difficult" to ride. Because it's the sportiest model, the power steering is limited to enhance feedback. Therefore it takes a fair amount of upper body strength to ride. *But* there are lots of other Spyder models that are "easier" to ride. Check out their cruiser-touring lineup ... those are based on the F3 in this video but will be more relaxing to pilot. ~RyanF9

In Texas these are classified as motorcycles. You have to have a motorcycle license to ride/drive one. I've owned several Harleys, but a lot of guys on Harleys won't wave at a bike if it's not a Harley. I don't really care if you're in a car or truck or go cart or motorcycle...if someone waves, you wave back. In Texas people wave as you drive by, regardless of what you drive...most of the time. Especially outside of a city.

It's cool." and lots of glances and smiles from the ladies and a guy walked up to me at Timmy's and said "That's a beautiful machine you've got." It was also mistaken for a new machine by a Spyder rider! Genuine no-rubber band 4-speed with overdrive transmission. 998cc and 100hp and 76 lb/ft of torque, good power band above 3,000 rpm and red lines at 9,000 revs. Not a speed demon but passing with two up on the bike is no problem and a way from a light it is quite quick. It also sounds great, stock. The nanny _is_ a pain in the butt, though.

I don't know if there are any road legal quads, not that I would care, especially if it had headlights, brakelights, and turn signals, but I think a quad could be a great option. I totally missed the obvious connection between these and snowmobiles until this video (durrrr). I think these are much less silly now, especially if you are a snow rider looking to get your jollies in the off season and want something that feels like home.

Not for young pups that still want to be stupid, do stupid things and increase their chances for an early grave on a two wheeled bike. More for young and older guys that have matured and just want to be safe and enjoy the ride. People are too ignorant these days on the road texting or talking on their cell phones. You have a much better chance with the stability of three wheels.

exactly, I have a form of C.P. (triplegia, I was born with it) but I want to ride with friends. btw I'm one of the "young pups" never got to ride a motorcycle except as a passenger, which was three wheeled, two in the back, one in the front. would like to do my own thing without my mom being overprotective because of my condition.

The issue with distracted drivers isn't that two wheeled motorcycles can tip over... Fewer escape routes with a vehicle that's more than double the width of a motorcycle.

Thankyou for saying they drive like a snowmobile. Let's face it, they are snowmobiles with wheels. I've ridden snowmobiles, motorcycles and a spyder ( a friend's ) and spyders are very much more like a snowmobile. I agree they aren't very fast either. My friend kept bragging about how far his spyder was, my stratoliner deluxe quickly showed him how slow his spyder was lol

The Guardian It's certainly not a trike, it's sold as a roadster, but I never said it wasn't. Simply front sports car, rear bike - that's what you said. Personally I'd rather the Slingshot. Spyder loses the bike handling while not really giving you any benefit except not having to put your foot down at stops. It's more a 3 wheeled ATV than a bike. Spyder's are still cool and get unnecessary hate. Wouldn't give up my bike for either tho.

If you want to know if it is fast race A motorcycle over a 10 mile course 5 miles bitumen and 5 miles of slippery dirt roads, if you’re on the Can-Am you will have completed the track & have time for a coffee before the motorcycle gets to the finish line. Bypass the nanny system and they become an awesome drift machine also.

"It's tiring - even on the straights". I borrowed my neighbour's older version of the CanAm Spider for an afternoon ride. I too found I had to wrestle it a lot, as it was extremely sensitive to even minor road irregularities. Uneven pavement caused it to lurch to the side. This shifted my weight to the opposite side, and along with it twisted the handlebars in the direction of the unwanted turn, making the lurch to the side that much worse... As Ryan noticed, it was hardly a relaxing ride, as this twitchiness was worse at highway speeds on secondary back roads. My neighbour's trike was an older model, and may have needed alignment, or perhaps the newer models aren't that unstable. But for the amount of money you can spend on a CanAm you can buy a modern car that's more stable, comfortable (and with A/C & heater), safer, and has more luggage and passenger space. Maybe even more fun to drive... I'd love for this trike to work for me, as I would consider it as my 'final bike purchase' in my senior riding years. But based on how it handles, I don't think so...

If you haven't already, set the rear air shock on max from the dash. I found it helped considerably. In addition I'm getting an aftermarket sway bar and links for it. The stock ones are puny so body lean and sensitivity to camber change are the order of the day. The Y-shaped aluminium frame flexes under highway-induced torques which changes the angles of the front wheels and requires attention but only if you're too fast in a corner. This is a bike you drive. Though it is a roadster it demands as much attention as any motorcycle. But it's a helluva lot smoother.

  • @endeavortrikes
    @endeavortrikes5 жыл бұрын

Nice review and you are correct the nany need to have an off switch. Also it is a "sport trike" not a standard hard to handle trike. It's built around steering and handling not fashion. When it comes to motorcycles it is motorcycles that do everything backwards like counter steer. Car and trucks don't counter steer. automatic is the only way motorcycle and sport trikes should be built. It' is like a snowmobile as snowmobiles are just plain fun. There is a way to ride trikes like this using a stiff arm which eliminates the feeling of flying off and reduces the effort to near zero,
