Can a Toyota Camry Really Be Sporty?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
We drive the UPDATED Toyota Camry SX hybrid to see whether this sedan is worth a look up against midsize SUVs that are more popular in Australia.

The new 2022 Toyota Camry SX now comes with a 160kW (214hp) 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid engine and front-wheel drive. The old V6 engine is sadly dead. Toyota claims that very few people in Australia actually bought the V6. Besides, the hybrid is extremely fuel efficient and remarkably powerful.
So, should you opt for a Toyota Camry over an SUV, or over another sedan like the Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, Volkswagen Arteon or Honda Accord?
As always, we don’t accept advertising from car manufacturers, and we’re powered by Budget Direct - so this is an independent, honest review of the Toyota Camry.

After driving a hybrid SX recently I agree we no longer need the V6. It's such a smooth, nippy combination that Toyota has just nailed again and again and again and it’s a perfect fit for a Camry of any grade.
A camry station wagon will be a massive seller imo since not everyone wants an SUV that sits higher and will offer a lot more boot space

I drive a 2008 Camry Grande and it's actually quite a nice car, comfortable on long drives however it can also be fun when driven hard on twisty mountain roads.
Picked up an ascent sport 2.5H a month ago after an 8month wait. great car. -Rubbish parking sensors (2 front and 2 rear only) -Garbage audio system Everything else about it is fabulous, shocked that I'm actually getting better than advertised fuel economy without trying!

The Harmon Kardon sound in my partners 2021 Outback touring is way better sounding than the average JBL "premium" sound in my 2022 Camry hybrid SL.
I'm really enjoying driving my 2022 Camry hybrid SL. Lots of space for the little one, big boot and fantastic fuel economy. It'll even beat dual cab utes in a traffic light merger which is a bonus!

I do miss hearing about the V6 option with the Camry, but would choose the hybrid as I’m a budget conscious person and the hybrid has decent amount of power. I don’t own a Camry, but had an 2017 hybrid Camry as a rental car and beautiful car to drive and has oomph.
Just ordered an SX in Liquid Mercury! $43,500 with protectors and dash mat. A lot of car for the money! Coming out of a V6 Camry and I'll miss the grunt for sure! Looking forward to 800-900 km to a 50 litre tank of fuel rather than 600km to a 60 litre tank! Huge $ saving over the life of the car! Excellent review, thanks!

I have a 2018 Toyota Camry SE. Bought it used back in February of this year with 61000 miles. It's has been my favorite car of all time. I love the look the feel of it and the interior is the best. The only grip I have is wish the SE would come with the LED tail lights mainly because you can see them better than the little small 1 lights bulb. Other besides that the car perfect
Just a small critique for your videos, you describe storage spaces, for example in this video at 2:15 you mention the area with the 12v socket and rubberised tray. But you don't actually show it on camera. It would be good to see these areas so we can see the size/placement and general layout.
What's the maximum EV only range with the newer Li Ion battery, and what's the maximum speed before the ICE cuts in?
I own one - one of the better decisions I have mad - it loves being pushed around - handles so well and still so comfortable (that's the mark of a quality car). Test drove numerous similar cars, but this was the best all rounder - and wow! the economy! average 4.8 to 5.0 l/100 klms, but on one long run I actually got 4.2 l/100 klms
I've got the last of the V6 Camry, marvellous power and get up and go! Frankly, the fuel use isn't so bad, on open road 5.5-6.5 litres/100 easily achieved. In suburbs 11-13 litres per 100.. Once you drive V6 you'll choose that over the 2.5 Hybrid everyday ending in "Y"!
/ausfinance can’t wait for this be 18 years old. Prime purchase time
I looked at the SX in Feverish Red today. It looked great, but that paint is high maintenance. Be prepared to have it paint corrected to get it looking scratch free if it’s a used one. And I suspect the clear coat on it is not overly durable. I think I’m favouring Frosted White but will look at a blue one too.
good review on a really good car, but that v6 is a sweet engine
Thanks for another great, independent review John. I remain a bit of a sceptic in regard to CVT transmissions - do you really think Toyota has it nailed in this guise?
@JasonISF
2 жыл бұрын
Toyota's 'e-CVT' isn't actually a CVT in the traditional sense - there is NO belt whatsoever - it just uses two electric motors called MG1 & MG2 and a bunch of physical gears. Very simple and extremely reliable.

I like this car. I wonder if a hybrid powertain model lasts as long as a non hybrid though.
That Camary could be by putting the Rav4 prime drivetrain in it and the gsr corolla suspension and brakes, with the TRD look. A 302hp AWD hybrid sport sedan getting 40+ mpg, keep it under 40k and will sell alot of them
Someone give John a bonus so he can pay a tailor to lengthen his trousers!
Loved your content. I think base model is pick of the camry range, as it comes with full size spare, 17 inch wheels with better ride and it takes 91 ron petrol. Sx or any Camry Hybrid runs on 95 ron so not sure whether u would end up saving on fuel, also it's more expensive to insure hybrid/electric vehicles than traditional vehicles I'd really appreciate your feedback on pick of camry range or do a review for petrol only camry. 😀
@JasonISF
2 жыл бұрын
The hybrid drives way better than the petrol only, due to the torque from the electric motor and is a much quieter car. 95 fuel is only about 12c more than 91 so you're still saving money. I see as little as 3.9l/100 kms on some drives.

I own a late 2021 Camry sx hybrid with 30000km on the clock, Honestly surprising how well it drives but in my opinion the factory Dunlop sportmaxx tyres are overpriced rubbish. I disagree that overtaking can feel like it runs out of puff, from my experiences putting it into sport mode leans more on the electric assistance for acceleration but even in normal mode you have plenty of grunt. Eco mode is far better in the city as the regen is less than in normal mode but provides more of a coasting effect. Highly recommend once the factory tyres give out, get another brand. Factory tyres are expensive, hard rubber that is horrible in the wet. Swapped for Kumho PS71 and can't complain.
@JasonISF
2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The reviewer is wrong that sport mode only changes the steering weighting. I don't even need to use sport mode to overtake most of the time, but it's nice to have that extra punch when that dual cab Ute wants to get in front.

It's a pity the wagons just aren't popular anymore. People now opt for a crossover or SUV. So for many manufacturers it doesn't make sense to make it, since they don't sell as well. Most people who do want a wagon, buy it in the C-segment anyway. Which is why for the Corolla they still have one.
