I am an exmuslim woman who was raised in an islamic country. Every word sam saying here about islam is a fact. Islam allows neither progress nor tolerance. Im lucky that i live in a free country now and im afraid to see how islamists use the freedom and tolerance of these societies to play victim and further their islamic agenda. Also so many westerners are completely oblivious how islam works, cos i think it might be that you have to live in an islamic country, experience its oppression and see its destruction firsthand to understand the overwhelming dangers it poses.

I'm an ex-Muslim from the U.S. I think honest people from backgrounds like mine can see the destructive potential of Islam even within free countries. Some masjids try to enact small scale Islamic courts even within the U.S. - for example, a woman I knew growing up was put on "trial" for apostasy when her abusive husband read her diary and discovered her doubts about her recent conversion from Christianity to Islam.

Obviously you can be white and privileged and care about real white privilege but at this point it’s mostly just cringeworthy, virtue-signaling garbage and especially so when applied to the Israel-Palestine conflict where it clearly doesn’t apply.

Sam has a reputation as an islamaphobe (a fake word of course) and it’s widespread enough that people will just ignore him. People are dumb. I didn’t agree with a lot of what Sam thought about Covid or trump/biden, but I won’t throw the baby out with the bath water. I value truth and intelligence wherever I can find it and don’t feel that I need to accept everything a person says to appreciate some of it

We need to keep speaking up, keep countering narratives, write to all the senators in every state and tell them how concerned you are and that something needs to be done . When they get enough messages it makes a difference. Contact media outlets and voice your opinion, suggestion, or grievances about things they are reporting. Surround yourself with Jews. Create a protest or go to a protest. I can think of many slogans we can use.

I’m a 27 year old from the Midwest who is gay, leans left, and is also horrified by the general brain dead response to this whole event. After October 7th last year, I have never changed my opinion that Hamas and Palestine, as well as the general Muslim response to this thing were as evil as can be. It’s literally the definition of evil. But I’ve been shocked by how many people my age, whose opinions I previously respected, have shown support for Hamas and contempt for the Jewish people. Thank you for sticking with your principles and not going with the crowd. Not to presume too much, but perhaps as Sam said about non-fundamentalists Muslims who earnestly immigrate to the US to engage with secular values, you and others such as yourself who are of further left demographic (again don't mean to assume) but hold to your principles are also a huge asset. Sam put it well when he said our "Western values" have been "delicately flipped" from within. It's not just because of Islamism but that's besides the point- a large majority of our generation is culturally unreachable by our institutions, corporations, boomers, millenials even. Imho, moreso unreachable than ever due to the atomization of online media. Continue chipping away and being an good example for your peers and others. Remember its always wise keep cool, take the high road, and choose your battles. Hopefully we can improve our institutions with due time.

@@theopensource09 How was he “trash?” - He turned the university into a major research institution, was the first President of Princeton to admit and actively recruit Catholic and Jewish students and faculty- hence Einstein as an aside. - He’s the only US president with a Phd, in a highly competitive field for his time. - He was the first to emphasise science as a research topic at the University. - As US president, he turned WW1 around. After the entry of the United States in 1917, the slaughter was basically over. Hence the fact that his name, surprisingly to Americans, is the most frequently used for European streets, train stations, subway stops, schools, etc. , of all American Presidents. Not FDR, not Kennedy. Jefferson comes second in France since he was ambassador to the country. I live near streets bearing all the aforementioned names in Paris.

I used to be a fundamentalist Christian who used to believe that everything in the Bible was the word of God. I suspect it is only because of my past commitment to that kind of theology that I have come to be so concerned about other forms of fundamentalism, particularly this one. Those kinds of belief are a firewall against reason and they self-evidently can and often do lead to appalling intolerance, violence, horror and destruction. I fear that the vast majority of people who have never themselves had a fundamentalist mind-set have very little idea of the seriousness of the situation. Sam Harris is at least one great exception.

In Berkeley, CA, teachers at a public middle school took their students on several pro-Palestinian walkouts. One of the walkouts of 100 students stopped by the Jewish community pre-school (which accepts children of any faith or background) with bullhorns, stayed there for a while and then returned back to school. Group was accompanied by the teachers and two women in a conservative Muslim attire. One may wonder why demands of the immediate ceasefire has to be aimed at the American preschoolers. The same day, a graffiti was posted on the white board at the same school "such-and-such HATES JEWS. We stand with such-and-such!" . This happened two days AFTER the head of Berkeley Unified School District claimed at congressional hearing that there is no bias in Berkeley schools. Just to remind that middle school age is 11-13. About the same age Hamas trains their school students to hate and Jews. This is the face of American woke left now and their interpretation of freedom of speech.

I’ve listened to this over and over. As a Jew and supporter of Israel I am grateful to Sam for articulating the issues of Israel’s right to defend itself, as well as the threat that the West faces from Islamism, without falling into the right wing trap of demonization of individuals. Sam even promotes the idea of welcoming more people from Muslim countries, specifically those who can explain to the west and to fellow Muslims (liberal Muslims and especially apostates) how Islamists and Jihadists intend to undermine the west, as we see in Britain.

I think what is drving a lot of the misinformed kids is a conflagration with the middle east conflict and the obvious class war going on worldwide....Sam doesn't touch on this, but the conspiracy theory world holds Jews in great contempt relative to 'deep state' stuff and their collective wealth and worldly power, surely there is some of that, but that should not be conflated with this Islamist threat... The kids are angry because they don't have the same opportunties as boomers etc., and they have a right to be pissed for that. There is a lot of unconcious patterns, etc. that are arising in this conflict. IFS therapy should be seeing a hay day. BTW, if you don't know what that is I highly recommend checking it out as an excellent paradigm to understand and heal ourselves and others, and to more peacefully understand and interact with others. But, yeah, the numbers of the misinformed cannot be good.

I think his emphasis on western values as opposed to Christian values is the right move. Sure, there are a lot of overlaps between what the New Testament says and what we could all agree is moral. However, it’s not 100%, and if you want non-religious folks like myself onboard to deal with the issue of Islam extremists, then you need as many people on board as possible. We can argue our differences in civil discourse once the banks of civil discourse are shored up.

I partially blame it on modern social media that rewards inflammatory rhetoric in a positive feedback loop, and any nuance of the discussion of lost in the process.

Most activists and their sympathizers use two methods. First, the look for oppressors and the oppressed. Then the look for who is weaker. It doesn't matter if the identification is true. You weaponize the Christian idea of protecting the weak and cast any group who is successful as the oppressor. The underlying motive is hatred of the good for being good. Israel is a superior political culture since it is grounded, for the most part, in the sovereignty of the individual. They transformed the desert into a land of material and intellectual wealth. For both socialists who gave up the dream of an industrial utopia and the religious who only store treasures in heaven, they are united against a this-world prosperity.

If Sam had, instead, submitted this commentary in writing to the NYTimes, it would have been rejected. The NY Times and most of the liberal left media will not permit an honest discussion of Islam.

I have gone from being a open hearted left leaning liberal. To right wing anti immigration pro Zionist. It took me being robbed by 2 Moroccan boys I helped with work, legalised their status and paid their taxes . I am now going to get a gun licence. Love from beautiful Italy.

As far as I know there is only one man who can say these things so clearly.

Well, Israel dismantled their "office" in Jerusalem. They also post videos of Hamas and other Islamic groups attacking IDF soldiers with music in the background, obviously celebratory.

This is so comforting to listen to. The blaring idiocy of so many people, including people I've known for many years, is rupturing my eardrums. Thank you for this. I feel like I'm living in an alternate reality where everyone is insane. SO good to hear basic sanity.

One can imagine these campus (and non-campus) activists demanding total divestment from Chinese companies, but I think they're savvy enough to know where their smartphones come from.

Thank you for helping Western civilization hold on to whatever semblance of logic and reason that it has left. Whatever atrocities are being visited on the Jews today will be visited on the rest of Western civilization tomorrow. It will be a very rude awakening for many of these folks when they realize that they're targets of equal value as any Israeli to organizations such as Hamas. Only the opportunity to reach these targets was ever different.

October 7 atrocities by hama cannot be compared to genocide and ethnic cleansing going on livestream in gaza done by the IDF. It's clear to the students. Why not the Jewish students do anti-hamas demo. One can have their camps on the north end and the other end of the camps. I notice there are many walking paths in the campus. It's quite impossible to block all paths to class. Both sides can have their camps. No need to call the police. Police action have given more publicity to pro-Palestine cause.

I found a sane comment, a complete sea is insanity here.

Christianity, the resurrection and the meek don’t represent weakness, but rather surrender, sacrifice and transcendence of ego respectively.

Despite all the criticism Sam has gotten the past years, no one can convince me that he isn’t the most radical thinker of our time. I like Jordan Peterson a lot and I forgot about Sam for a year or two, but when I just now stumbled on a video I instantly got reminded who the verbal boss is.

With all his bitching about postmodernism, Peterson really is the last person in the world to complain about postmodernism, funnily, as Peterson is doing nothing but shitting out postmodernist claptrap with a crypto-conservative/religious twist. Kinda sad as I saw intially sound, critical people really taking him seriously, maybe their penis problems were just too severe. Actually, the only time I really lost some respect for Harris was when he started associating too much with Peterson. I think this was slumming for probably marketing reasons for that silly IDW thing. After getting some generic Anti-SJW polemics right in the beginning, already shortly after that it became clear Peterson is a blown-up nothing with a shitty agenda. Kinda glad Harris seems to politely move away from that little Peterson shit these days, although it's disappointing he ever thought it was a good idea to be all buddy buddy with him.

Thankfully, we have Sam. How many other people in the public do we have that have moral clarity like this? Not many...

Would it not be better to take a position against all acts of war and all acts of violence?

Sam’s reasoning is so reductive it couldn’t withstand the most basic scrutiny. Probably why he no longer debates serious thinkers and instead chooses to fluff off other cosplayers like Douglas Murray. What an embarrassment.

I'm firmly on the left and I am absolutely on Israel's side in this case. Although disappointed and embarrassed regarding the current protests in our institutions, I get it. As a youth I was hit every day with the idea of our government abusing less fortunate countries, constructing a massive veil of lies and using the the regular guy to line the pockets of the established elite. On top of that, I'd feel immense guilt when comparing the lives of those in poorer and more dangerous countries with our lives here in "the greatest country on Earth." The anxiety that comes with these ideas taxed my heart and mind to such an extent that I was eager to accept a narrative that absolved me, personally, from guilt, and blamed a monster in the shadows. And I was naively hooked into false protests very similar to the current situation. I've relieved much of this anxiety by coming to grips with the fact that evil will exist as long as good does. There is no way to distinguish one without the other existing in a juxtaposition. If you want good, you will experience evil, you cannot destroy it completely. I've made peace with the idea that I will never live in a perfect world, but will have various opportunities to improve it with each new day. We DO live in arguably the best country in the world. But the best country in the world still falls depressingly short of our highest ideals. Few situations can be resolved into clear decisions of right and wrong. I strive to keep my eyes and ears open. The narratives in my mind that incessantly seek to identify, categorize and judge, constructing complete stories about the reality I experience distract me from sensing what is actually there. How could I have it all figured out? I didn't, I don't and I never will.

What's bull. The post goes to the heart of what I've long felt was central to the left wing psychological mindset. Guilt fused with compassion. I'm an empathic guy, but I've never carried white, or western guilt. Never will. This person grew out of their naieve leftism. Good for them. Its ok to be on the left. That's not the point here. But the west has long been imprisoned by collective guilt, and frankly self hatred. Not me, not sam. And thankfully, many other westerns who aren't captured by this insanity.

I have tried to have this conversation with my left-of-center friends, but it seems I have only damaged relationships. It seems like there's now a whole other side of the table I can't talk to at Thanksgiving. Sheesh.

@@KenHayes0 I kind of agree. What he's saying here is right. But what he doesn't say is important to. He doesn't condemn obvious wrong doing's by the IDF in a fourth right way. It's kind of similar to the Students he's talking about which minimize wrong doings and violence committed by the Palestinian side.

The culture of death practiced by Palestinians is the fundamental issue. Sam didn't talk about the fact that in Israel, Arabs can own land, run businesses, and pray without fear of death. But he did compare the values of western individual rights vs. totalitarian theocratic thugs. You can adjudicate errors of the police force in a western republic like Israel. You have no method of justice in an Islamic state. You submit or die in Gaza or most of the 50 majority Muslim nations. Stop pretending that Islamic death cults are just another way of life no better than others. Egalitarianism is poison.

Focus on what terrorist groups want. And what they stand for. Declare that you are against that.

After reflecting there is more that I disagree with here. I know that you take offense to saying there is no moral ambiguity here but I think only a true centered perspective can see that there is. You have innocent civilian casualties at a high rate where there stuck between a rock and a hard place. Hamas is a monster but by international law, UN standards so is the IDF. I remember you saying in another podcast that when you’re dealing with an enemy of this kind your only option is to become a monster otherwise you fall victim. I think the solution is one to recognize that we’re acting like monsters instead of being human.

One thing Sam never addresses with his guests is the fact that all these people will never be able to be convinced as long as they 1- Consider a Palestinians the sole victims for years of abuse by Israel 2- the entirety of Israel is an occupation of their land. It’s a fool’s errand to argue or discussed any other point with people who hold these points to be true.

We Italians are considered culturally combined largely, with Jews in the US. Which is sort of hilarious, yet somehow makes sense. If I were alive in '48, I would have advised my Jewish friends to just stay here in New Jersey, I'd prefer our civilization had decided a couple yrs earlier, that historical claims to land are not a desirable solution for persecution. However, it would have been a moot point since that time (since Israel was established,) and today I'm completely pro-Israel.
