Camping Under a Giant Umbrella • In a Thunderstorm!
This umbrella made an unexpectedly cosy lil nook! It wasn’t watertight, so I chucked a small tarp over it (which defeats the object of using the umbrella I guess, but I still loved it under there). My first experience of sleeping wild during a thunderstorm was just gorgeous
⚠️ It's never entirely safe to be outside in a thunderstorm. If you find yourself outside during one, lose elevation and get to lower ground as fast as possible. Get away from peaks and ridges. Stay out of water. Stay away from tall objects in open spaces. Caves and stone huts may feel safer, but actually offer zero protection against lightning. Trees can be hit and can fall down, or be set on fire. In this case, the storm was always a few miles away and never directly overhead. This is still not entirely risk-free, as lightning can travel several miles, but it is safer than being directly under a thunderstorm. Your chance of being hit by lightning is extremely low - but it still happens

I think this channel is better than a lot of other bushcraft channels because its more real. Things go wrong, sometimes you get drenched, and sometimes your tarp blows away in the night. Instead of buscrafter telling you how you're doing it wrong or have bad kit, its just fun mistakes and enjoying your time in the woods.
@mx-0163

@bechris9959 I mean yeah. It's KZread. I don't think anyone is expecting to watch bushcraft documentaries here. Anyone who has ever done bushcraft should know that things go wrong constantly. This is more real because some of the things that go wrong are shown unlike other channels. That's not really difficult to understand I thought.
I would have loved that. Sleeping in the woods with lightning going on.
In fishing terms they’re called a brolly. There are actually high quality brolly’s for sale specifically used for carp fishing. They are capable of dealing with loads of rain and are definitely waterproof. Great to see that you try these methods as well. It’s always relaxing sleeping outside and being part of nature. Great video!

@@WildBeare : I holidayed in Rhodes a few years back. The air was hot and sultry, with the promise of a storm. As I was sitting under a beautiful tree at a restaurant, a bolt of lightning hit the ground about 100 feet from me. The bang was tremendous and I could feel the reverberation it caused as a shock wave. The staff immediately hustled everyone inside until the storm was over. When I returned a few months later, the cafe had pruned many of the branches of the tree I had sat under, totally disfiguring it. I loved that tree. Lol

Your perpetual sense of adventure and willingness to try anything is just delightful. I do love a good storm. I've quaffed a pint in my hammock during one, but I've also been trapped on a mountain ridge in one, also in my hammock, but utterly humbled and terrified as my eyes were blinded my lighting bolts and thunder rattled my very soul. best advice i can give for waterproofing ; thick contractor garbage/bin bags. Cut them along one side to open them up for larger surface area, and put them either under, or over your tarp/shelter. They are very cheap, but extremely effective. Best advice for warmth, as a canadian, Wool. Even when its soaking wet, it will keep you toasty warm. Totally off your brolly ... er trolley😂 Glad you survived the lightning under your umbrella.. Ella.. Ella! Great video ❤
What you do is amazing. I often watch one of your vids and go to bed with a rain CD and imagine being in the camp you've built, and drift off to sleep. Vicarious living through you. 63, but I'm thinking of trying it for real. Great stuff.
As an electrical engineer keep one of these in the car for when working in outdoor substations, when working on the switchgear you can pop this up over the top in seconds. [the one I have is quite strong so when tied down it doesn’t move in the wind] One of the things I like is that you can erect a tarp over it like an awning at the front. tie the tarp guy line to the center pommel and continue the Guy line down to the floor at the rear, and tie down to the side ground pegs, then lift the tarp up at the front. [in effect the umbrella becomes the rear and side walls of you tent]
ur braver than me 😭

LOL. That's a huuge umbrella. Then the storm; reminded me of childhood stories about never standing outside in a thunderstorm. And never standing under a tree when the lightning dances all around. Gutsy night out.
Bugs bugs go away laugh out loud. Thank you for sharing.
Love your endings. So cute. Bye....pop!
You are certainly a brave and innovative camper. We enjoy how you sometimes do a little crazy things and are always completely calm and enjoy all things.
Lady, you are a force of nature.
Brillient! Loved this little overnight trip. The rain & thunderstorms made it magical.
To be in touch with nature like this is amazing and I love i5 myself . I absolutely love walking and adventures in the woods , moors and wild during the evenings. The brilliant noise of wind blowing, owls and such screeching and calling out amazing
So cosy in the rain and thunder .. Love it ! 😍
You are a very crafty Beare; nice job modifying the d-rings! You should mod the whole thing Beare-style and take it out again. 😀 You're braver than I, I'd be scampering from the lightning! Hope your ankle is doing better. ✌️
I once was camping in a thunder storm in the forests of Germany. With the lighting crashing and the thunder rolling, I sat in my tent dialing through the various radio stations on my short wave radio (this was before smart phones). I landed on a a station playing the 1812 overture, cannon volleys and all. It fit perfectly to the heavenly cannonande reverberating through the canopies.
Love your videos! I cannot wait to hit some trails soon.😊
nice and cosy! love that lil see thru snail 👍👍👍🇳🇿
Kind of crazy when you have to put seam sealer on an umbrella. I guess take nothing for granted . So glad to see you again Lady Clare 🌹🌹
It's good to see you back to doing what you love, playing outside with your animal friends.
You never fail to crack me up Baby Beare....luv it...be safe kiddo
That looks so cozy, warm, and comfy. Brilliant idea! Love your adventure!
Bravo Claire, I've never seen anyone do anything like this on a camping trip. I think I had as much fun as you did.
the bloody stockings 😍!
I love your positive attitude Claire. Thanks.
The fact youre able to rough it out in the wilderness, alone, and still look beautiful doing it, is absolutely stunning!
Oh, goodie. A built-in lightning rod! I like the quilted pillow; bit more comfortable when about half inflated. Your camera work and editing are very good. Thanks for the upload.
You're vid's are so fun to watch, Claire. Thanks for them. If you want to waterproof a piece of equipment, mix one part of good quality silicone, with about 20 parts paint thinner. I forget what Englander's call it. Make sure the item you want to waterproof is clean and dry. Hang it such that no part of the item overlaps, you can make two applications within a day or three of each other. Mix the silicone and paint thinner well, very well, and keep mixing it as you apply it. Use a wide brush to apply it. Don't do this work indoors! Wear old clothes, rubber gloves, and face protection if you can get it. Be smart applying it. Let the item hang in good ventilation for three or four days. Hang it in the sun to accelerate drying. Hope this helps.
GREAT VID from a brave and beautiful lady
Thanks Claire, I do this every time I fish through the night you see so much more, and with a good quality umbrella pitched in the right spot it's magical! Especially in a thunderstorm lighting up the horizon, you can see how the ancients superstitious of 'Fey Folk ' arose.
So happy your back on your feet and looking well; another heartwarming video. I recently have had over baring hard times and since watching you, I now go in the wild outdoors that helps massively. You are truly my life saver Claire, thank you with all my heart. Big hugs and stay safe dear friend.

Good morning, I had a lovely sleep
During thunderstorms I like to open the side door of my van and sleep at the opening. I can watch lightning for hours. Best storm I ever saw was camping in my van in the desert slightly east of Santa Fe. No rain, just a hours of light show headed towards me, but never getting to me. Second best was also camping in my van, but in my backyard. I never saw actual lightning bolts in that one, just continuous cloud to cloud lightening for about four hours. The thunder never stopped.
Sleeping near a pointy rod in a lightng storm, my hero!
Camping is beautiful.
Beautiful. The ankles looking good
Pritty cool watch enjoyed watching
