Camara Traps - Mammals at Huai Khayeng Nature Park, Thailand

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In February of 2023 a friend of mine brought two Browning camera traps over from the US and I immediately set them out on my land in Thong Pha Phum, Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand. It was a bit of a learning curve regarding the more appropriate locations for the cameras, and one of them frequently had problems, adding to the frustrations, but I did get some really nice images in the first 5 months of using them and I have put the best of the mammal clips into this compilation.

Thank you so much. Yes, I can't help myself, and tend to get carried away at times. You should see me when I first upload the footage and look at it for the first time..... actually, I should film that! I can't wait to get back over there in the next few days to see if we can pick-up the pig or injured leopard cat again.

Fantastic selection of mammals! I'm pretty envious that you have this kind of diversity in your yard! I wish I had the financial means to buy large plots of land on the border of some parks to create private reserve, haha.

Yes, it was certainly very curious. Incidentally, we apparently get two species of macaques up on the limestone cliffs above my land where I got the images of the porcupine. I'm still waiting to get some images of them, but from the descriptions I've heard it seems that there are stump-tailed macaques. The other species might be Assamese macaques, as they are thought to live in this area. I can't wait to see them or get some film of them.

@@thailandwild4897 Sounds great! I'll make sure to share! I love all animals, though! I hope to visit Thailand one day and hopefully get to see some of those fascinating creatures in person! For now, I'll live vicariously through you! haha! My mission is in exposing the issue of abused social media primates and the effects of it and hopefully get platforms to reform their policies to protect vulnerable animals from exploitation in that way. Sadly, there's very few channels with content where primates aren't being interfered with or mistreated. My viewers really would like another outlet to see fascinating primates. I would like to encourage them to watch channels of them being respected, like yours. There are no channels that I know of that shows Stumpys living their regular lifestyle. There are plenty of stump-tailed PET channels, which a lot of people like me, don't like to see and one great rescue channel that shows them on occasion, that I know of. There's no channel I know of that shows those elusive Assamese macaques you have there in Thailand. Not even on occasion. I would love to see that species again. Please don't feel rushed. Thanks for giving love and respect for all these animals! Stay safe!

Great stuff. I assume you are referring to Monkey World. Luckily for me it is quite close to my father's home, and I had the pleasure of taking my family there some years ago on a visit back to the UK. I also follow their channel. I must say, I am surprised by the extent of the 'pet' type channels involving primates. It was something I wasn't really aware of until I started getting comments on my clips. As for myself, I will concentrate solely on wild animals. We have about a month or so of the rainy season left, then I will get back out there full-time and see what I can get.

@@thailandwild4897 Yes that is exactly the content I was talking about. I forget the name of the channel as I think they abbreviated the name as it shows the docu-series. But yes, they're the Monkey World rescues, who shows some Stumpys and other interesting primates. Another good rescue channel on KZread is Vervet Monkey Foundation. The sanctuary is located is South Africa and they do great work saving vervets! Very little is shown of primates in general, now that i think of it, in the wild. However, there are plenty of great documentaries that probably took years to make. However, seeing something that is more raw footage, sort of speak, of just the simple things is more engaging and I think that captures a lot of people's attention. It did me. I think your content stands out, more than the rest because it's almost like a little of both, which is great! I love that and you really do get some amazing shots of these interesting animals, just beautiful! I love your appreciation for animals and nature. It's a breath of fresh air my friend!

Yes... it has been a lot of work these last 15 years to get the land back to a natural state... we have the constant threat of forest fires nearby, poachers, and now these dogs, but when I see the wildlife that is showing up on the camera traps I know that the hard work is worth it.

Fantastic footage, it has always been a dream of mine to buy land for this particular purpose, perhaps one day I might purchase land in the same area, I’ve always been a staunch supporter of rewilding, only fear at this point is elephant attacks!

Yes, it has been a great pleasure rewilding this piece of land, but for several years we were visited by elephants at the end of the rainy season which prevented me from building hides or using solar panels for pumping water. About 5 years ago the elephants moved to a different region, so my land has become a bit 'safer' and this has given me the confidence to develop the water pools and hides.

@@thailandwild4897 oh, I never knew elephants could be such in bane in terms of conservation, I would argue that their very presence is a positive marker of biodiversity, they are a keystone species after all

Yes indeed, it is excellent that they are able to survive in Thong Pha Phum NP, but the problems arise when they look for food in the farmland around the edge of the park. They are very welcome on my land, but while they were there it meant that I couldn't make small wildlife hides etc. for fear of them being damaged. Incidentally, talking of keystone species. There have been several reliable reports of tigers in TPP in the last couple of years, and since last year gibbons have been heard in the park for the first time in a long time.

@@thailandwild4897 fantastic that there’s been an increase in wildlife in Tpp in recent years, seems like one can never underestimate the ability of wildlife to bounce back, I might have mentioned this in previous comments , but I still cling on to the seemingly fantastic hope that rhinoceroses may still survive in remote parts of the western forest complex, I myself have heard stories from villagers and wandering forest monks about sightings, one monk even saw one wallowing in a mud pool in huai kha kaeng a few years back, albeit in a very remote area, wholly untouched by civilization. There has also been sightings by rangers in the southern hala bala forest next to the Malaysian border. Of course it might be easy indeed to dismiss these accounts as fishermen’s tales, but as the world is a weird and wonderful place, we might perhaps find ourselves wiser to entertain such possibilities, for indeed, who knows?, perhaps someday either me or you would find something interesting out there regarding rhinos, one never knows…. I assume due your surroundings and expertise, you very well might find one before anyone else!

Yes indeed.... I would consider that the greatest triumph, but I must say I am quite doubtful now. I had the great 'pleasure' of tracking a Javan rhino 30+ years ago In Ujung Kulon NP. The footprints are HUGE..... I was stunned. The rhino chased me up a tree!!! I have also heard stories from various parts of Thailand, but nothing in the last 12-15 years. A long time ago there were persistent rumours from Kaeng Krachan NP for both Sumatran and Javan rhino, but as far as I know, nobody made a cast of a footprint. However, around 2010 I was shown a picture of a footprint that looked authentic from Phu Kiow WS, where there had also been persistent rumours of an individual for many years. That was a long time ago now. Personally, I would love to see a reintroduction program.
